understatement. His first album was in 1958, so he's by far the Bonnaroo artist with the longest career. styles. I'm just amazed and so glad to be a part of all this!
One more thought, by way of a prediction: Coleman will close out This Tent Friday night, and Tortoise will lead into them. Since Tortoise has claimed Coleman as an influence, I'm sure they'd do anything to have him guest with them, and that's what I hope to God happens.
Actually, Ralph Stanley formed the Stanley Brothers Band in 1946, so maybe the second longest career.
Good god, Tortoise with Ornette Coleman would also be pretty amazing.

That's not an easy album to find. I can't find a downloadable source and the actual cd costs upwards of 40 dollars.
I picked up a copy off OiNK a few weeks ago. If you want an invite, let me know... although I don't have many left.

Well I was going by first recorded material, but if you wanna go by when the artist was first established as a professional musician, according to allmusic.com Coleman's first gigs were as a teenager, which would put him around the same time: mid-40's. So I guess it's safest to say they are about equal in their seniority.
^^ I think that Tortoise with Ornette Coleman could be the best set this year (if it happens). Tortoise is already one of the 3 bands I HAVE to see + Ornette is a must see also= One helluva legendary tent performance.
If anyone wants to get hyped about Ornette, watch episode 9 from Ken Burns' Jazz. The episode ends with Ornette and his quartet starting the free form movement. Greatness...
Haha....To be honest I don't know a whole lot about Ornette Coleman other than the name and a few select songs. I took a couple Jazz appreciation classes in college and the few times we surveyed free jazz it just wasn't my thing. Don't get me wrong I love other types of jazz, just not free jazz.
This is my first post. I just found this great site.
I saw Ornette Coleman a few years ago here in New Orleans at Jazzfest. He was amazing. He was joined for most of his set by Alvin Battiste and Ellis Marsalis(father of Wynton and Branford).
A cool bonus was that I met Derrick Trucks after the show.

I'm pretty sure that it'll be a mid-afternoon tent show.
No way. Look at the placement of his name in the lineup (let alone his actual popularity and musical importance). I think at the very least he will close out one of the tents, and may be a mid or late Which stage act. People less popular/important than him have been in those slots.
I'm going with the 1st slot on the What Stage, followed by Wilco and the White Stripes (at which point I will jump to SuperJam to see Ornette Coleman for the second time in the day
I'm hoping he gets a slot on the main stage, that's why I asked, It would be so friggin great to see him perform infront of one huge crowd as opposed to a tent crowd. Not saying that he wouldn't blow up a tent

I hope he does recieve his much-deserved place on a stage (at night) but, remember they stuck Buddy Guy in a tent at like 2pm last year. Guy's not really my thing but, many people would call him a legend. Regardless, I'll be there, no matter where or when, for Coleman!

Right time, wrong place. Buddy Guy played Which stage. You lose, oat!! ;D
DAMN! He was loud then! He was making it hard to hear Lewis Black in the comedy tent! It was actually kind of cool. Black was a little "off" because of how loud Guy was. Regardless, I stand corrected!
