I apologize about the attack on the fanbase because that maybe just how the fan base is in Atlanta. Where I made the mistake of witnessing a show
I've seen O.A.R. 3 times in Atlanta... so I guess you're complaining about me. Guess what, I'll be at Bonnaroo this year too, contributing to the fanbase there - watch out!
Sounds like he was speaking in generalities of his personal experience with that scene, and not any one individual. Why do some think it necessary to come to the aid of bands people dislike? If someone doesn't like a band, they are equally entitled to express their opinion(given they aren't personally attacking anyone). This thread was never really about OAR, hell, even the dude who started the thread knew the response would not be positive. Sorry, but I am tired of people acting as Champion of the Bands Nobody Likes. That kind of stuff is just as condusive to negativity as someone expressing a negative experience.

I'm not going to watch out I'm just not going to their set. By the way if your name has any relation to Georgia Tech then I just lost all respect for you. Anyway have fun listening to average musicians that make radio music.

I agree with you - I don't care whether someone likes or dislikes a group - I know there are going to be differences. I'll state my opinion and get out of the way. But when the discussion turns to talking about their fans, and making comments aimed at people like me, I think I have reason to speak up.
I saw OAR in Cincinnati a few years back before they started to get big (kinda big, I guess) and they were decent in the small, local bar/venue capacity when nobody had really heard of or paid attention to them. They had a few songs, but were mostly known for jamming out one song: Crazy Game of Poker. It was decent.
I've seen them since then, after they put out a bunch of poppy albums, and they sounded like garbage. Poppy instead of jammy. Sucky-Poppy. No offense to anyone who likes them, and I sure don't have anything against their fanbase--that's too much of an encompassing statement for anyone to make.
And they deserve a thread just as much as any other bonnaroo band. I mean, who remembers Pelander Z?

Fair enough. And I hope you didn't take anything I said personally. We cool?

Oh yeah, you're fine - you didn't say anything I found offensive. It's all good

I got a little respect for them. However, there isn't anything that different about OAR, IMO. They're OK musicians, and OK songwriters.
But back to the whole "pop" debate. That is just a word. If you go to a record shop the Grateful Dead, Phish, and Les Claypool are listed under that genre. Are those artists that mainstream? ....Not really. But I think OAR is truely a mainstream band, at least that's how the majority of their music appeals to me. Pop is a genre, however, mainstream is the word for this situation.
And to watch out for the smite button, I'll say it again. IMO ;D
One of my favorite things about music, is that one persons favorite bands might be Phish, the Dead, and O.A.R., while someone elses favorite bands might be Good Charlotte, Black Eyed Peas and O.A.R.. Boundaries and labels are for big record companies to worry about, I will worry about which music I want to listen to.
I don't think every single band AC/Superfly adds to Bonnaroo needs our personal seal of approval. They're a few bands on the lineup this year that I will 100% not be present for. One less conflict for me.
Yea I'm definatly going to pass on these guys. As long as I get some killer additions that I want...the more crappy music Roo adds the less conflict so it works out ;D

Haha, i think you'd be hardpressed to find someone whos favorite bands are Phish, The Dead, and OAR.
Ummmmm.......no they have always sounded like a (not that good) college bar band imo. It has always amazed me at how popular they have gotten.
I agree. I went to one show in Atlanta last year and it was a buncha wasted white hats screaming and preppy girls texting on their phones. Needless to say, I left early and regretted the purchase.

I wouldn't say those are my favorite bands but those are bands that I listen to.

i guess i am a hardpressed person. The Dead & O.A.R. are 2 of probably top 10 bands. i think that the dead are far better musicians, have better music, and put on a better live show, but that doesn't make me think less of oar
damn oar gets em going almost as much as dave does. sure oar has alot of frat/sorority type fans but i dont think they are coming to roo for oar. i havent seen them but i have friends that listen to em and its all right. if they are at roo im sure i will be at a different show. i hope they add guster for the wuss rock category. i cant believe oar causes a battle over fanbases at a hippie fest headlining tool.
I disagree with the 'wuss rock' that you give guster....I'd call it more of an acoustic rock, which is far from wussy.
well its a term they use to describe themselves. and i think its pretty accurate. not in a negative way though. ive seen them a few times now and they are always good. they were good at roo in 04. saw them at the toledo zoo last summer and it was an excellent show as well. i think they should be back at roo. i thought they would be last year with the new album.
