I'm not going to put their artistic credit versus Radiohead, but they are probably a bigger signing.
This is exactly what I'm afraid of. None of us know the nitty gritties of artist signing deals, but considering a radiohead ticket costs 35$ and a Police one is gonna be 50-275$, I don't want to think about the sacrifices Superfly made to book the group.
Is it a big get? Sure. Was it likely expensive? Sure. But let's not be too naive here. Radiohead tickets are not inexpensive. One show I went to for $40 for bleeder seats and there were $220+ packages. This is a far cry from the $10 show I saw of them on a double bill with Belly in 1992. Tom Petty tickets are also often expensive.
I'm sure they made sacrifices to get Radiohead in comparison to WSP the year before.
Edited: My ticket was $42 a friend reminds me. But we both agreed that there were $200+ packages available for that show in a major market.
not too sure what show you attended, but their last tour was 35$ flat ticket rate. I have never heard of radiohead tickets at anywhere near that price, except on the ebay trade, which causes me ot doubt your assertionm but that's neither here nor there. My 2 cents? Police are a reunion band, reunion bands largely tour for money. I would wager they cost more than any band in roo's history to book. I don't think they are worth the sacrifices I'm sure it took to get them there.
Derail: I saw them in Montreal in 2006 and the tickets were around $50 for a seat in the 12th row. I know that the balcony tickets were cheaper but not by much.
Radiohead would have been a lot of money. I've said it before, but they took 1.2mil to play Coachella in 2004, and given the length of their set etc. I wouldn't think they'd get any less for Bonnaroo last year. The Police probably took something along those lines, probably a little more than Radiohead but not much. Whoever made the comment about them enjoying the crowd they will be playing to is right. Bonnaroo will be the biggest crowd they'll play to, and it will most likely also be the youngest.
Anyways, TheFRP, good post. That's a good video, and shows that their live show isn't just a straight-from-record performance. I also liked the outfits of the backup singers, like cheerleaders
I honestly doubt it cost any more to book the police this year than it did to get petty or radiohead last year. As much as Copeland dug it last year, and as big on the environment as sting is i really don't see a rise in ticket prices. Then again, I don't know the details or how much it costs to book a headliner so I guess we'll see.
Yeah, isaac, that's why I posted that one. It won't be like a Tom Petty directly off the greatest hits type of show. Besides the Dead and Neil Young, this is the headliner I'm most excited about in my soon to be 5 years of attending. Always loved the Police, never thought I'd get to see them.
Yep, you're right. I wouldn't think Bonnaroo would kill themselves to book the Police though, definitely not at the expense of the lineup overall. They wouldn't do anything like Coachella did, offering the Smiths $5mil to play.
Anyways, even though it's everywhere, Pollstar has dates up for the Police, including Bonnaroo.
Weird scheduling though, I'm not sure it's accurate. They have them playing the 15th in Vegas, then of course Bonnaroo on the 16th, and then the 18th back in Arizona.

Whether you have ever heard of them at that price in no way debunks that people have paid that much. Yes, the last tour had a flat ticket price. That was uncommon, to say the least. My higher price was during OK computer and the packages were possibly organized by the venue/promoter with a meal, pre-show party, etc (I don't remember the details of a package I didn't buy nearly ten years ago). I saw them for a $30 ticket price even at the 9:30 club in the late 90's. I've seen Radiohead 5 times and it has gotten expensive.

This is very very exciting. From these two new shows the past two nights it seems like they're all really into it, which i think is the best sign of a good show at this point. I also dont think they're in it for the money, these guys are already loaded, especially sting.
Yeah, they had interviews on that webcast and Sting said he had an "inexplicable desire" or something to that effect. I think logic would say if you're rich enough to release an album of lute music then you aren't really strapped for cash. They will make a lot of money off of it, yeah they're going to capitalize for sure, but I think there is a musical focus. You can tell that it's more than a greatest hits tour because they're playing the songs different than recorded and not just playing it safe.
The real sign will be if they can get through this tour and if they're interested in recording new material. That would be great.
This year, Bonnaroo will be headlined by recently reunited rock legends the Police! Check back this Wednesday, February 14th for the full Bonnaroo 2007 lineup and ticket information.
^yeah, deffinatly. what police song do you all want to hear the most at roo?
mine is walkign in your footsteps
Mine is definitely So Lonely! Always been my favorite Police song. Although Spirits in the Material World and Don't Stand so Close To Me aren't too far behind.
I'm glad we found out early, but then again I also feel somewhat bad for bonnaroo, as the police beat them to the announcement. I figured they'd hold off on the tour announcement until after the lineup was released.
I think "Every Little Thing She Does is Magic" will be the one I'll look forward to most, just because it's so fun. "Don't Stand So Close To Me" is right there too. I think the Bonnaroo date was probably meant to be held off, but it leaked and spread so fast that they had no control. Think we'll still get the lineup at midnight?
