Rush has a new album out this year. Single comes out March 13th I guess. Album scheduled for around April 10th or 17th. And their tour is rumored to be June 13th (Nashville)-whenever.
This is very interesting if you ask me. I think they would fit the Tom Petty spot very nicely.
I honestly don't think that we'll ever see Rush. Yeah they fit that jam/prog mold previously held for the likes of TMV, but this is one of the most controversial bands I've ever encountered. You either love them, absolutely and truly hate them, or dislike them but appreciate their talent. Couldn't see a bunch of people go from loving a My Morning Jacket show to experiencing basically an arena rock band with progressive traits.

Seriously? I have never seen them live, but from what I have heard they bring it. Plus, how are they any different than Petty? Petty is basically a sing along, poppy song type of guy. They are a sing along progressive rock band, that gets lumped into arena rock. Plus they have ten times the musical ability of anyone in Petty's band. They are all masters of their instruments.
I would think the Nashville date would rule them out. I thought you couldn't play within a certain proximity of Manchester before/after the festival. Anyways, I would take them over Tom Petty, and I agree they are all masters of their instruments. However, I can't see them playing the fest if the Police play, or at least not in a headlining way.

they would most certainly headline. And to be honest, unless it is TOOL, Pearl Jam, Radiohead, or maybe the Gorillaz, I would rather see an old rocker headline the other spot (assuming The Police and a jamband are given).
It just seems likely to me. If they were not there I would not care, but if it means that Dylan is preheadliner, and they headline, I say bring them on!
I wasn't looking at this from a personal perspective. If Pearl Jam had played, then Rush would have fit in much better in a Tom Petty kind of role. However, with the Police looking most likely to be the headliner, then another act that peaked over 20 years ago just seems really unlikely. When Bonnaroo announces their lineup, keep in mind nowadays it's a big contest with Coachella, with each festival trying to one-up the other and garner the most press attention. Right now Coachella is doing pretty damn good with Rage playing, they got lots of press for it. That's why there are headliners, because people like us get all giddy to see Ben Harper or Michael Franti playing, but to the public Radiohead gets a lot more attention than moe.
Humanity has advanced, when it has advanced, not because it has been sober, responsible, and cautious, but because it has been playful, rebellious, and immature.

So you are telling me that The Police are not on par with a Rage reunion? And they would most certainly get both The Police and some other older rock act if they could. I just don't think any newer bands are going to be headlining at the 'Roo this year, unless it is TOOL, and I think that is highly unlikely.

I've listened to nearly every album they've released, and I completely respect their talent, but just can't stand the music.
Fair enough. Geddy's vocals can get to me after awhile too. Thing is though, because he is older now, his voice has lowered, and he can't hit as many really high notes anymore. So, I guess this would be a good thing for people like you, if indeed Rush does play Bonnaroo.
I didn't say anything about the Police in that post. I had this long, beautiful post typed out and then accidentally highlighted it all and typed just "rs" so that's an abbreviation.
It just doesn't make sense for America's biggest rock festival to sign two acts that peaked nearly 25 years ago. What I meant to say with that comment about the headliners was that those are what draw the media attention. If you send out a of press release with the Police and Rush, people are gonna be saying "is it 1984?" or something like "Bonnaroo goes retro" which I don't THINK is the kind of publicity they want now.

"And their tour is rumored to be June 13th (Nashville)-whenever."
greecianlover.....where did you procure this information? Rush is one of my all-time favorite bands, and I'm from Nashville. I was 17 the first time I saw them, and I haven't missed a Nashville show since. The thing that struck me is that they started their last tour (30th Ann.) in Nashville. Just the thought of a show by them anywhere near me this year gets me as giddy as Bonnaroo, whether they play it or not. It does seem a little wierd that they would start consecutive tours in Nashville though.
And obviosuly I fall in the "love em" column. It's okay to hate though. It makes my chances of getting good seats to see them even better. hehe. As far as Bonnaroo, there aren't many bands that I would say wouldn't go over well, but I have to put Rush in that column. Some people just don't/won't understand the complexity of their catalogue. I agree with Isaac and how people would be saying "what is it 1984?".
IMO, they're just misunderstood by the general rock public.

See it's not that I think Bonnaroo wants to sign two older bands. It's that I am not sure they are signing a newer band that is big enough to headline this year. You have to remember, until last year, we really didn't have any newer big name at Bonnaroo other than DMB.
Like I said in a previous post, the only newer bands I see being right for Bonnaroo and big enough are:
Pearl Jam (not at Bonnaroo this year) Radiohead (would love a repeat, but not going to happen) TOOL (Bonnaroo is not ready for this yet) DMB (hopefully not again) Gorillaz (not touring right now)
So unless DMB headlines again, what newer band do you all of you see there?
Also, Rush like Neil Young is at least still making new music and are not just nostalgiac acts. Tom Petty had a new album last year, and he headlined. Rush has a new album coming out this year. They are considered a good band, and are definately musically talented. I think the possibility of Rush headlining is better than most of you think. You have to realize, alot of people didn't think Petty was the greatest choice for a headliner. His shows are basically the same night in and night out. He plays his greatest hits. Also, from what I have heard, Rush puts on one nasty show. They definately have the musical talent Bonnaroo likes to have in it's headliners.

Seiously, check out some of the live videos of the Gorillaz on youtube. The DVD they released was awesome. But, better yet was their performance at the MTV Europe awards. The hologram technology they used for that show was amazing. It was rumored for awhile that they would tour using the hologram setup, but it hasn't happened yet, and sadly probably never will.
I haven't gotten a chance to see that DVD, but it sounds amazing. I think I read that they are in the works for doing a movie with the Gorillaz characters? I don't know.
Anyways, for the record I am definitely a Rush fan and I'd love to see them if they came. I was just saying that from my viewpoint they don't seem too likely.

Just to warn you, the DVD while still a spectacular show, is not the holograms. They only used those, as far as I know, for the MTV Europe awards.
I said in another thread a while back: YYZ is the best thing they ever did as a band. Beside my point of the band being controversial, I don't think I'd mind seeing them live, just keep the Geddy vocals to a min...

Like I said, from what I have heard his vocals aren't as high pitched as they used to be because he is older now, and doesn't have the same range.

I think bonnaroo would best coachella with just The Police, because lets not forget, Rage is pretty much coachellas only good headliner, the other arent even mentioned. So i think this really opens up what bonnaroo can do with the other two nights since they'd really only need one huge headliner to best coachella, but two would obviously crush coachella.
Rush is one of my musical pet pieves! Every time I hear one of their songs on the radio I cringe. One of very few older "legendary" bands that does this to me.
you've gotta listen to rush's non-radio stuff. a lot of their songs are around 10 minutes long and not radio friendly. i've definitely heard tom sawyer and freewill more than enough times, but rush rocks.
I've never really heard much of their non-radio material bc the radio material is such a turn off for me..........i'm sure lots of people love them for a reason
i've seen them live twice.. dissappointed the first time and then just I plain wanted to shoot myself the second time at sars-stock. Get this: they had their roadies spend like twenty minutes dragging three washing machines out onto the stage and they did nothing with them, they just turned them on and had some clothes spinning behind them. Thank god they were opening for Ac/Dc who was opening for the Stones.
