Their show in 2005 at the Metro in Chicago ranked in the top three shows I saw that year. Exceptional, and I have to agree with what was said before, they actually have more jam capability than they let on.

I would agree here and say that the live show is crazy. Certainly does not dissapoint. But I am still skeptical about the "Decemberists are sooo big" talk....

Well the crane wife is the 21st most popular album on amazon right now. I dont know how they calculate that or anything, but for an album thats been out for a while that seems pretty big.
This new album is their first for a major label, they were on year end lists for Rolling Stone, Spin, Blender, and were the #1 album of the year for Paste. Their shows sell out all over and they have quite the cult following at the core of it all. They're definitely riding higher than they ever have before.

I believe it's just a matter of sales through their site. Still something for them to write home about.
A few weeks ago, Pitchfork reader Andrea Gutierrez informed us that she had received the season program for the Hollywood Bowl in Hollywood, California. On that program was a listing for a July 7 performance by the Decemberists with the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
Whoa! Is it true? Indeed it is. Following in the footsteps of Belle and Sebastian, who performed with the Philharmonic at the Bowl last summer, Colin Meloy and co. will have the privilege of debuting brand new orchestral arrangements of their songs at the legendary open-air venue.
As if that wasn't awesome enough, Band of Horses will open the show.
The best part? Future Decemberists performances with orchestral accompaniment are in the works for later in the year.
As previously reported, the Decemberists' first DVD, A Practical Handbook, is due out on Kill Rock Stars on March 20. The day after that, the band kicks off a North American tour with My Brightest Diamond. They're currently rocking the pantaloons off Europe.
And if you haven't already, do check out the extended version of the "O Valencia!" video featured in Forkcast last week. It rules.
Ok -- so the Hollywood Bowl thing isn't until after Roo, but ya never know!
I've seen them 3 times. First time was back in '05 after "Picaresque" came out at Southgate House in Newport, KY. Probably the best time I saw them, as it is a relatively smaller club (400 max.) and the crowd particpation was the best as everyone in the place knew every Decemberists song. The second time was at Newport Music Hall in Columbus, OH. A little bigger, and they opened exceptionally strong with the entire EP "The Tain". Great opening, better theatrics, but far less crowd participation. And the last time was on their most recent tour in support of "The Crane Wife", again in Columbus, OH, this time at a much bigger venue, Promowest Pavilion. Lousy crowd, as they are getting a lot bigger with major label support, but they still had a good time with it, and they ended up closing their set with a few members "acting out a scene from an ancient battle" in the middle of the crowd, with crowd members as the backing battlers. It was definitely a cool experience.
I see them playing the same set time that Bright Eyes played last year with Wilco or The Shins playing the Death Cab slot. They are definitely worth seeing, especially if you've never seen them before. You'll thoroughly enjoy it from both a crowd participation and a band energy standpoint. I think they'll pull out something crazy from their sleeve for Bonnaroo as well.
I saw them in '03 not long after Her Majesty came out. They were playing a free show @ Earlham College in Richmond, IN on Halloween. It was a neat show, in an auditorium, probably about 50 people there, most dressed in costumes. They closed the set with "I Was Meant for the Stage" and it was really a moving rendition. Haven't seen them since then. They've really expanded their sound in that time so I'm really psyched to see how they've developed their live show.
