The problem with Jim Thorpe's candidacy is more that pro football was pretty primitive (and segregated) in his era. It's just tougher to quantify greatness. Winning multiple gold medals and then being one of the best football players of your era is still pretty impressive. Moonlighting as an mlb player is more of a footnote to me.

Multiple golds...in one Olympics, which is less impressive when compared to Phelps/Biles/Bolt, each of whom had (or have had) dominance across multiple Olympics.

I don't disagree that his case is flimsy against some of the other candidates, but I did want to put some respect on his name. He's not the GOAT, but it's an impressive resume in a what was a vastly different time.
There's obviously no other pre-WW1 names on this list which is also telling and instructive.

also it occurred to me that this contest's great failing is not including Jim Brown
Arguably the greatest running back of all time Arguably the greatest lacrosse player of all time College basketball player College track and field decathlete Civil rights icon
he was not a good person after his sporting career, but he accomplished more as a collegiate and professional athlete than damn near anyone
Bill Russell should also be here, tbh - world class high jumper + 11 NBA champ + 2 time college basketball champ (they rewrote the rules of basketball because of him) + also a civil rights icon
After this round and next one, it’s more or less a can’t lose survivor imho. People will make arguments and have biases toward certain sports and sports heroes. I don’t really care. Hawk, Williams, Rice, I Am the Greatest, Gretzky, Brady, Tiger, Messi, James, Phelps, MJ, etc. lots of goat motherfuckers. Anyone who gets mad it’s on them.
