Youth summer sports schedules led me to missing this more often than not in recent years, but dutifully attended all the earlier years and will always be one of my favorite fests.
The Yoko set still remains one of the most bizarre shows I've ever seen.

RIP. Only went in 2015, but I absolutely loved it. Always wanted to go back for the reasons mentioned: amazing lineups, cheap, Chicago is beautiful and a great city that's driveable for me. Was planning on going back but got distracted by Primavera, Panorama, and some other small Midwest fest and family vacations, etc. Will definitely be missed. Bummed out about not having this option anymore

Serious note, I’m really bummed by this, actually. Consistently one of the best NA lineup’s over the years and hands down the easiest festival I’ve ever attended.
Wtf! Were there any indications that this was going to happen? And I wonder if they’re planning to do it in another city in the US instead
The Gq move seemed to be the early sign. But then you just hoped it worked this year even with all their bullshit. All that extra vip and stuff just didnt do its job. It was still very undersold. I think they shouldve let it get to 20 and call it. You have a huge turnout and you could try to book some alumni artists and such. Let them see what they were going to get rid of just because of some profits. Destroying an institution aint where its at.
I think the most likely outcome is that Fucking Riot Fest does what it did this year on the Beck day and just tires to go for a Pitchfork lite thing to try and nab that audience.
Second most likely outcome 16 on Center refines their concept for the Warm Love/Cool Dreams festival and tries putting something like that on in the summer
People can say whatever they want about how Pitchfork sucks now and the festival has been going downhill or whatever shit they want to believe (not here, just speaking generally) but this is actually a big loss for Chicago. Chicago has Lolla which caters towards the mainstream and gets a handful of alternative/indie-leaning artists, Riot Fest caters to the punks and also gets a handful, but neither are completely dedicated like Pitchfork was. There were plenty of artists throughout the years where it was like: “What other festival would book this artist?” and it was cool seeing those artists and being exposed to new acts too!
There is definitely a hole now in the city that this festival filled. The Empty Bottle is doing some cool things (as mentioned above) and they could potentially make something bigger to help replace the hole, but they already do a lot so who knows if that’s something they would want to take on. I hope something new comes to Chicago though!
Last year didn’t sell well so it was the final nail that did it it seems.
And the year before as well. Felt like a ghost town the night The Smile headlined
The lure of 2/5's of Radiohead wasnt enough. But I am still glad they got that booking. Now you really wish D'Angelo had panned out and they had thought better and had Bon Iver on there anyway and yeeted Big Thief.
Digging through tons of old photos. Have to see what I can find from a few prior years that I dont have handy but might just do a giant af post.
And yeah, what the fuck is gonna fill that gap in the summer. Like Lolla is not getting those artists onto their lineups cause nobody would care. And Riot isnt gonna be swinging for the fences on like getting Aphex Twin or something. It was amazing at their peak they were getting fly dates from the likes of Slowdive and K Dot. Even Caribou flew red eye from Croatia to make it for their performance.

Gutted I didn't get to make it (had tickets for the 2020 iteration, but, you know...) and even more gutted for the people I know whose annual big festival was this. Fuck Conde Nast, GQ, and every corporate ghoul involved.

It's been years, but I loved my Pitchfork weekends. Back in the glory days of Megabus, I'd round-trip from Cincy for $10, stay at a friend's for free, and go hard all weekend. Bjork with the storm rolling is just about my favorite concert memory.
Long live Pitchfork. I have 2009 images buried somewhere. But everything here is 2010 - present day. I hope the dude in the yellow bandana created good memories for ya'll over these 15 years.

Damn, this is sad AF. For the price point/crowd level/lineup variety/venue/vibes this was one of the best out there. Hopefully another fest comes in to fill the void somewhere. Kilby is close but SLC doesn't come anywhere close to Chicago for outside of the fest.
