The festival capped attendance in 2024 to focus on quality over quantity. While attendance was slightly lower this year, Capps said, ticket sales have doubled from 2019 to 2024.
...
What's next? That's the question Capps has started asking but doesn't yet have an answer for.
The festival could begin collaborating with other local organizations or adding events that aren't purely music focused, Capps said, but how that would look is still undecided.
"Not losing the vital character of the festival is a primary focus for us," he said. "We are not going to increase in size next year. We feel like we dialed it in very well this year, and we want to maintain that and maintain all of the qualities that make the festival what it is."

Semi-related... the Kraftwerk residency in LA has been amazing. Night #5 is about to start in an hour, but here are a few photos I took from the previous nights...

Goodness gracious, these might be the clearest pictures I've ever seen. How did you do this?

Their show in Cincinnati last week is one of the best I've ever seen. Friday night at the KCA? Would be an insane (but plausible) headliner booking.

Caught Mars Volta here in Indy last night. Feel like it'd go over pretty well as a Mill & Mine closer, not too far off-base from stuff like Horse Lords or SGM last year

They’re too big for that.
I dunno, man. I saw them here at The National which is a 1k capacity as well. I’d need to dig further but I feel like most of the shows this album tour was clubs. I could see it.

I’ve only seen them at the Tabernacle a couple of times and every other time was at festivals.

The venue I saw them at has a 2k capacity and I'd say it was noticeably less crowded than other recent shows I've seen there in the past few years... I don't know that they're significantly bigger than say, Animal Collective who played Mill in 2022 without much issue
No reason to think it's likely but it was a good show!
My hotel (Hyatt Downtown) is booked... and it costs as much (if not more) than the entire festival used to cost me ($3150!). There's cheaper options, of course, but DAMN!
I’ve stayed at the Embassy Suites (which is right across from the Hyatt) the last two years. When I tried to book this early last year, rates were insane. But they were in the “partner hotels” or whatever Big Ears calls them that were released when tickets went on sale and it was dramatically cheaper. Probably so expensive because they’re already holding back a huge chunk of inventory for Big Ears.
I know, I know. He played this year but hear me out. It was a one off show that was a collaborative set announced a few weeks before the festival. Crossing fingers he returns to play a full set.

Back in 2018, a local museum/venue put on a "Thurston Moore: Moore at 60" event. It was really great... he had Nels Cline, Deb Googe (My Bloody Valentine), Steve Shelley with him, along with others. Maybe we'll get a Big Ears "at 70" event in 2028?

They should just alternate between him and Kim every year.

Bummer that the Gillian Welch tour is hitting the Bijou, she's a perennial top wish for me. Guess it's not impossible she could loop back six months later. Stick 'em in the Bonnie "Prince" Billy spot.
While we're on BPB, it strikes me that there's a crazy possibility given the new Malkmus supergroup with Matt Sweeney, Jim White, and Emmett Kelly: Pavement headlines and plays Knox Civic, Hard Quartet plays, Jim White is there with reunited Dirty Three and Beings, and Sweeney plays with BPB for a Superwolf set. Emmett Kelly could bring the Cairo Gang. Honestly not farfetched. Right? RIGHT?

When do we start getting teases for this? Initial lineup dropped in September last year looks like, feel like we were getting lil breadcrumbs by this time last year

If memory serves right there wasn’t much last year. I remember Aja Monet and a few repeats but I don’t remember getting excited till they announced the announcement. Hopefully they’ll throw us a few bones though.
I’m assuming we’re getting the lineup in September when the Ribot / Ismaily show happens. Would make perfect sense to drop it then.
Also the new Nathan Bowles has been on repeat around here and I want that, too.
