It's especially brutal when you consider how successful Hinterland has been. Smaller market close by but the lineup is actually appealing so it sells out no problem.
A bunch of casino bands mixed in with the local bands that literally everyone here has already seen.

Theyre advertising that nobody will conflict so thats good. Price point couldve been way worse i bet. I mean they got ahead of Summerfest for the moment which always has something for everyone.

Plus, the Twin Cities have so many amazing large parks, yet they always try to shove these festivals into Harriet Island Regional Park. Like, I get it, they want to use a park right on the Mississippi directly across from downtown St. Paul, but it’s just not as conducive to that type of event.

FWIW at the time, First Ave wasn’t looking to buy additional venues. They’ve largely been approached as the local company with sellers knowing if First Ave wasn’t interested or not financially able, Live Nation would be then be the buyer.
First Ave has basically been playing defense against Live Nation in the metro. They’ve been able to largely buy the smaller venues and keep them independent as they’ve come up for sale, but Live Nation has still pushed into the twin cities with the remodels of both the Uptown Theater and The Armory. Both venues required massive financial pockets that weren’t financially feasible (unless you’re a multibillion dollar company that can throw tens of millions at a project just to run a loss).

Yeah one of my first thoughts about this fest is that it's just Live Nation trying to chip away at the market share First Ave has here. It doesn't have to be super successful but as long as it take away enough them overall it's a "success"

SIM is pretty well run overall but wow am I sick of the same 5 Bass EDM artists coming every year.

Yes, both were with Ned Abdul’s Swervo Mgmt. I don’t know the exact details of the financials, but basically, there was no way those venues could be profitable with what Ned was doing…
Also, yeah the Armory isn’t LN exclusive, however, if First Ave wants to use the venue, they only get to do an room rental at an exorbitant fee. I’ve been told it’s really not the right financial move for them to rent the room but they do it to maintain those band relationships that outgrow The Palace.
