I’m pretty excited to welcome back MMJ to the farm which has me feeling nostalgic. I’ve been at every set of theirs at the roo but have forgotten so many of the details. So let’s talk. First year was 2003 in a tent. Were you there for the set in 2004 in the rain? 2005? How about 2008 when Kirk Hammett sat in? 2011? Was 2015 the last year they played? Did I miss a year (not counting Jim solo or super jams).

They played 2006 LN in That Tent, but I don't think they played 2005. I saw them in 2011 on What, missed 2015, had tickets for 2021, so I'm very excited for this show.

I was at the 2006 tent late night. My first time ever hearing them or hearing of them. Opened with Wordless Chorus and I felt a lot like Stan in American Dad when he hears Jim James' voice for the first time.
Caught very little of the 2008 set but wasn't prepared for the rain so hid in That Tent for a different show.
In the great MMJ vs Primus conflict of 2011 I went with Primus.

edit to say they did indeed play 05 and 06
They played Which before Modest Mouse in 05. I walked over early for Modest Mouse and I don’t think I knew anything but OBH at the time, they blew me away.
08 was my first Roo and my first experience of MMJ. Wandered there solo after my friends went back to camp. They blew me away. I’ve seen them 5 times since(Roo in 11 and 15 and 3 of their own shows). Absolutely incredible live band. Looking forward to their return to late night and seeing what they pull out for us.

In 2008 I was 17yrs old and made my first trip to the farm from CT. I was raised on Metallica and was anticipating their set the most. After an exhausting day, my friend and I decided we would go straight back to camp following their set. We were back in our tents when I heard something in the distance that I just had to go check out. I followed the music to the Which Stage and never looked back…
16 shows under my belt now. Last year, I finally got my hands on the Burwell print from that 2008 show after 12 years of searching.

Please don’t rain again!
hey queen, we doing an inforoo meetup post MMJ? I'm going to JID first but will definitely then saunter over to MMJ to see the rest of their set.
Considering you've found the need to respond to my threads as if you are threatened by me I offer you some peace my confused counterpart. May you find peace in your restless soul.

Was talking with a work friend today about MMJ, she said "my first show was Bonnaroo 2004" and I said "me too!" And her eyes lit up and said "in that rain??" and we paused and had a moment together.

Saw them each year from 2003-2006. Ranked from best to worst, it went 2004, 2003, 2006, 2005.
By the end of the 2004 set there couldn't have been more than a thousand people or less at the stage, everyone else had ran for cover. The downside was that after the set ended, literally every single area in centeroo which was covered from the rain was completely full, so we had to ride the rest of the monsoon out in the open. Ended up trashing my phone completely, which made for a chaotic rest of the weekend.

Its also very odd they're only scheduled for 2 hours. They can't expect people to forget they were scheduled 3 hours in 2021. Being late night I'd like to assume they'll go over their time (especially when they do 2.5+ every night at their own shows) but I'm sure they'll treat it like a special show regardless.

I’m assuming we’re gonna get around 3 hours. Id love a repeat of the 4 hour marathon 2008 late night set, but I’m not gonna go in with that as the expectation.

I on the other hand will continue my unrealistic expectations and be disappointed if this isn't MMJ's longest marathon set concluding at sunrise

amelia meath from sylvan esso has sung a few songs with them over the years. jim james did the new basement tapes album with Marcus Mumford - he could be a possibility to come out for one of those tunes, but MMJ hasn't really played those since like 2015 or so.
could be totally someone random (like kirk hammet in 2008).
guest spots at bonnaroo have become a lot more sparse throughout the years so I'm really not holding my breath, but I feel like this set has the best potential for guest spots.
Tyler Childers is from Kentucky as well, right? Maybe they’ve ran into each other/ have some sort of connection from that. He’s playing on the same stage right before them so it’d be pretty easy. Sheryl Crow was also part of the Tom Petty Super Jam that Pat and Tom did so she’s another option
And instead of saying all of your goodbyes - let them know you realize that life goes fast - It's hard to make the good things last-you realize the sun doesn't go down - It's just an illusion caused by the world spinning round

browell how has seeing MMJ for the first time earlier this week influenced your LN choice? i can't remember if you were an all in korn guy or not beforehand.

feels like every year some act is scheduled for a late night set and ppl are like "oh they're definitely going to play longer than that" and then they don't

you aren't wrong. but it feels a little more likely with MMJ, given how they are doing all this celebration around their 2004 set lately.
but if they do go over, the safest bet is 15 minutes over, 30 minutes max. like end set at 2:30am, encore with like a big long Steam Engine or Touch Me I'm Going To Scream > whatever big song they haven't played yet, OBH, off the record, wordless chorus, dancefloors. we aren't going to see them go over an hour or anything.

yeah when's the last time an act was given free reign to just play whatever they want as long as they want late night? feels like it's been pretty heavily scripted for a long time now.
