Peter Hook & the Light - Bataclan, Paris -its really hard to really sum up what an absolute torrent of emotion this show was for me. have been wanting to see PH&tL for a while, and it just so happened they were gonna be in Paris while I was there. It happened to be at the Bataclan, a venue I was very familiar with for obvious reasons. It's a beautiful venue, and yeah I thought there was a weird goth vibe with hearing Joy Division records live in full at the Bataclan. I sort of assumed I would already get emotional, but then, Uvalde happened the morning of the show. We went through our day, a couple of people asked where we were from and then hit us with an "oh, aw Texas, I'm so sorry I just heard". Fast forward to the show, and all of a sudden I'm seeing a man play the songs he wrote with his friend who committed suicide, in a venue where a tragedy happened, on a day when another tragedy happened in a town my friend is from. I immediately start bawling, just non stop through set 1. eventually they play Wilderness which ends with "tears in my eyes" over and over and that just made me start laughing, thinking I'm probably the only person here sad crying. I spill the beans to my fiance during set break and sort of collect myself, rest of the show was amazing, and even though we didn't get blue Monday or bizarre love, ending on love will tear us apart was such a joyous way to end the night. ended up getting lost on the walk back to the hotel, saw some cool shit, might have gotten covid at the show. 10000/10
Tool - Bonnaroo -once again, cannot sum up what a torrent of emotion this was. I made a once in a life decision to drop everything on a Monday and bought a ticket to bonnaroo knowing I'd be able to pit this. was able to get in the line, even though I fucking now hate the line and how it works, I managed to get exactly what I wanted. front row, Adam side. I had to bicker with a handful of dipshits to not cut me in line, and was later attacked by the Spider Wook™, but I would do it again. just sort of left the show in a holy shit that happened daze and eventually wandered back to camp where I decided to Kevin Malone my feet into a back up cooler I brought. 1000/10
Genesis Owusu - ACL -one of my favorite finds last year, was really excited for this set. was solo for the first bit of ACL this year because fiance had to do some work stuff, so I made it a priority to get as close as I could for this. shows going great, vibing hard, waiting to hear Song About Fishing. at some point he comes out in the crowd and begins singing Song About Fishing in my fucking face. could not have asked for a better experience. there's a photo floating around of me either singing or offering myself for him to spit in my mouth. 100/10
slowthai - Bonnaroo 2nd most anticipated of roo for me and it delivered. within moments I was delivered a moment, that would recur later, as slowthai opened the show by getting in my face and yelling. I lost the Brothers Milano in an immediate mosh, and really didn't stop. Had an absolute Blasty blast, almost assuredly was on the Roo stream of the show. video floating around of me disappearing into the mosh. 100/10
NIN - SK 2nd time seeing the Nails, really made the shaky trip because I felt like it was my best chance to see them. the day for night show got rained out so it was awesome to see them without threat of cancellation and to finally hear Hurt. setlist was great, show was great, trent is the best. frail/wretched and you've got the key to my heart. 100/10
Stevie Nicks - Bonnaroo Stevie Mosh. Dan saying RELAX. Beers with the gang. A guy tore his ACL. Swaying, arms interlocked like a web reflecting the connectivity of the conscious universe. Rhiannon. Public urination. Group photos. Beers with the gang. 100/10
Gizz - SK - best of the 2 Gizz of the year Phoenix - ACL - these guys fucking rip Sons of Kemet - Bonnaroo - Genesis of the maddog 😮 face Kacey Musgraves - ACL - she headlined ACL music festival in Austin Texas which has country acts and she was not disappointed Wet Leg - SXSW - first sx for me and felt like a classic on the cusp sx band to see Gizz - Bonnaroo - play dripping tap at my funeral The Garden - SK - first mosh in a lonnng time Tobe - ACL - wish these guys all the luck in the world, loved it Khruangbin - SK - just hit me a certain way Denzel Curry - Bonnaroo - was great partying with @gno and Jake Jortles for this The Chicks - ACL - much more fun than at roo because I was with my fiance Green Day - SK - never seen them, got the hits I wanted, they were good show people Tyler the Creator - Toyota - amazing feeling seeing an artist I've been a fan of from ground up headlining huge tour in my arena P!nk - ACL - she's good! Herbie Hancock - Bonnaroo - legend, all the vibes The War on Drugs - Bonnaroo - sunset, all the vibes, Dan808 Pinkpantheress - ACL - she was just so fun on stage, and then teased everyone with half singing misery business, then sang misery business with Paramore like 20 minutes later Black Midi - White Oak - love these fucking lads

Great comeback year. Top 5 going by order of calendar date:
The Weather Station/Cassandra Jenkins @ The Troubadour - Hell of a double bill and I'm including both of them. Both were critical favorites from 2021 that didn't really make inroads with the masses from it, but it's the masses' loss, cause they're both incredibly captivating. Weather Station in particular was an emotional outpouring of grief for the world in a tender fashion, although I'm jealous of whoever got to see her ocean dress at Roo.
Hot Chip @ Ventura Music Hall - Believe it or not, this was my first time seeing Hot Chip. I don't know why I took so long, but the opening of this brand new venue in the town I used to live was the incentive I finally needed to check them out. The venue is great - far better than the existing Ventura Theater - and Hot Chip are the goddamn gods of blog house. They do it with practically no production either, just a bunch of dudes dancing around and making noise that makes you move.
Florence + the Machine @ Los Angeles Theater - I caught FATM multiple times this year, and I'm choosing the intimate warm-up show for this cycle as my show of choice. Took place in a theater rarely used for concerts, with an art deco vibe to the evening (they had a harpist in the lobby) and they even brought mounds of dirt on stage so they could have flowers sprouting from the dirt. Never even saw my "real" seat for this show, as I found a raised platform off to the side that no one claimed and had the time of my life with all that space to myself. I'm sure the break helped, but her voice has never sounded better either.
Le Tigre @ This Ain't No Picnic - My favorite festival set I saw this year. Goddamn, the time just feels right to have Le Tigre back. Apparently they were supposed to reunite in 2020 for election season, but that almost would have felt too calculated and manufactured, if that makes sense? And it's not like 2022 hasn't had its share of world events and human rights violations to rage against. It was loud, it was powerful, it was dancey one second and a mosh frenzy the next. I still think about how good this set was. I will absolutely see them again when they do a more full-scale reunion tour.
Jessie Ware @ The Belasco - I had been waiting over two years to hear songs from "What's Your Pleasure?" live and damn did she deliver. I know most of you did not get a chance to see it given how limited her tour was, and I hope she does a more thorough tour soon, because you need to see it and I want to see it again. Really impressive choreography, and her family was side stage, so we got to witness some cute moments with them too.
Honorable mentions: Damon Albarn - Walt Disney Concert Hall Cut Copy - Just Like Heaven Fest Land of Talk - Lodge Room Fleet Foxes - Santa Barbara Bowl Wild Hearts Tour - Greek Theater Gorillaz - YouTube Theater Weyes Blood - Ace Hotel The Smile - Shrine Auditorium (the sound there was awful as always though; stop booking shows there, Thom!)
Teddy Flair convinced me it was a good idea for me to try and rank the shows I saw this year, so I thought I'd share what I'm working with before I attempt this. and Fuck you Teddy

LONG POST WARNING. Just skip to the bottom for TL;DR if you wish to.
170 different artists, 11 festivals, in 7 cities, 3 countries. 2022 has been one of the most eventful years of my life since I started going to live shows regularly after I moved to the US 10 years ago. After I moved to Los Angeles last year, I didn't think I would be as lucky as I was when I lived in New York City, in terms of concerts and the sheer amount of acts I would see. I was wrong, as one thing LA is better in terms of offerings is the amount of its many festivals, which helps cross out a lot of names from my never-ending bucket list of acts I would love to see. Throughout the year, I have been ranking all the acts I saw and after a while it was getting really difficult and somewhat pointless. But I somehow managed to rank them, with the exception of one act I saw at Coachella. Arcade Fire was one of my favorite acts in the first half of the 2010s, however, I had started losing my connection with them right around 2016, which I think was the last time I saw them before 2022. I did like their surprise show at Coachella this year, and it was one of the best shows I saw this year. But I do not think they deserve a place in my list anymore, therefore I did not rank them. I think that set simply served as a closure on AF for me.
I am also not sharing the whole list here. I will start with some of the worst acts I’ve seen, then some honorable mentions grouped loosely based on genre, and finish off with my top 25.
Worst Act I’ve Seen in 2022: Liturgy at Psycho LV. I know calling an act the worst is very subjective and might sound harsh, but I just had no connection with this festival set that happened in a hotel conference room with bad acoustics. That might also explain why there are lots of other Psycho LV sets in the bottom half of my list lol.
Other sets I didn’t enjoy much, if any: The Body, Jhené Aiko, Wolf Parade, Nilüfer Yanya, Spelling (sucks because this was one of my favorite albums in 2021, and both times I’ve seen just didn’t translate well in a live setting).
Honorable Mentions that couldn’t make it to top 25:
Moderat, LCD Soundsystem, BICEP, Helena Hauff, Mesmé, Fred again.., Avalon Emerson, John Talabot, Sherelle, Sofia Kourtesis, The Avalanches.
Tame Impala (Lonerism set), Weyes Blood, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, The Smile, Danny Elfman, Sharon Van Etten, Ethel Cain, Phoebe Bridgers, Stereolab, Warpaint, Yves Tumor, Suede.
black midi, Fontaines D.C., Black Country, New Road, Dry Cleaning, Viagra Boys, Beak>, The Chameleons, Shame, Kim Gordon, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Squid, Bauhaus.
Harry Styles, Caroline Polachek, Lykke Li, Magdalena Bay, The Roots, Kim Petras, Rina Sawayama, Toro Y Moi, Shygirl.
mor ve ötesi, Los Angeles Azules, La Femme, Kikagaku Moyo, Ricky Martin, Seun Kuti & Egypt 80, Banda Machos, Nicki Nicole, Moenia (I'm aware there is not much genre cohesion in this grouping).
Mercyful Fate, The Armed, Boris, Deafheaven, Blood Incantation.
And finally, top 25:
25. Amenra at Psycho LV: This was my favorite set in this festival, and my first time seeing them. I’ve always heard they delivered live, so I had some expectation going in, but I wasn’t expecting it was going to be this good. It also helped that they played the only stage with proper acoustics.
24. Darkside at Hollywood Forever Cemetery: Interesting coincidence that I was at their last show ever before they announced hiatus back in 2014 when I lived in New York, and that set is actually one of my favorite shows ever (which I am also working on, albeit very slowly). Unsurprisingly, this was their first show back after 2014, and I feel so lucky to live in the city they chose to come back. It was a 2 hour show with an intermission, and Nico seemed happy to be playing shows (hopefully we get more solo shows from him in 2023). Solid set, very fitting to the location where it took place.
23. Working Men’s Club at The Echo in Los Angeles: I was so happy when they announced a very small run of shows in the US. Great booking from Desert Daze as well, but I only caught them in their club show, which I think is a better environment for their dark new-wave, post-punk sound. It was sad that there were only 50 or so of us in the club, and they didn’t seem so happy about it (or it was just their stage attire? not sure lol), but they still delivered a solid 1 hour long set. If you haven’t heard of them, you’re missing out.
22. M.I.A. at Just Like Heaven: Like her politics/opinions or not, her earlier albums are just so good. Having not seen her before, I was hoping she would play the hits, and she did. It was just a really fun set - with the exception of the very last song, Marigold, which she played right after Paper Planes. I think the latter would be a better choice to finish, but oh well, I was happy she didn’t cancel and just played hit after hit.
21. Karol G at Coachella: She is one of the acts that I wouldn’t pay to see her own show, but would definitely catch in a festival setting. I’m glad I caught this set, because it was a very fun one. I kinda guessed something special was coming when her band started playing Como La Flor, but wasn’t expecting such a great Latin Pop medley. Also, I would never think I would hear Macarena in the Polo Fields (or anywhere else lol), so kudos to her for putting on such a good show.
20. Carly Rae Jepsen at Coachella: Also my first time seeing her. I didn’t like her last album that much, so I am glad this show happened before then lol. Was so happy to hear a lot of Emotion songs being played, and Call Me Maybe as well - another one of those songs that I thought I wouldn’t hear live ever.
19. Mon Laferte at Walt Disney Concert Hall & The Greek Theater: If you ever followed my best-of lists in the past, I’m sure you are not very surprised to see Mon Laferte in this list. I saw her twice this year - the first one was her “Con Mis Monstruos” show, which was basically an acoustic concert. Walt Disney Concert Hall was a great setting for this, and she once again showed her great vocal skills. The second concert at The Greek was her full band show, which was a three-act show that spanned her career over 26-27 songs. She is such a star, and I am determined to see her everytime I get the chance in the future. You should give her a chance too.
18. The Mars Volta at Hollywood Palladium: I might have written briefly about this in another thread right after I attended the concert - this set was pure bliss for 2 hours. Going into the show, I didn’t know what was coming my way, and leaving it, I was convinced that they are indeed a great live band. If you haven’t seen them in 2022, hope you can next year.
17. Tim Hecker at Primavera Sound Los Angeles: When PSLA announced their side shows, I was upset to see Tim Hecker playing the same night as Darkside and I wanted to see Darkside more. So I had to make sure I was in the festival grounds before his set started at 3 PM on a very sunny LA day. Tim Hecker, I think, is one of those acts that you really do not need to be in the front line, so I found a seat under shade further back from the stage and just listened to it from there. I don’t remember how 45 minutes passed, but it was such an emotional and meditative set for me. I think he is working on a new album that will come out in 2023, and I hope to be able to catch him in a club soon.
16. Angel Olsen at The Greek Theater: This show was part of The Wild Hearts Tour and Angel Olsen was the closer of the night. Even though I enjoyed Sharon Van Etten’s last album more than Big Time, for some reason, I enjoyed Angel Olsen’s set much more that night. Not sure exactly what it was, but it was just so romantic. And so happy to be able to see “Like I Used To” at the end of the night.
15. Jamie xx at Coachella & Portola: After I saw Jamie xx for the first time at Coachella in 2015, I had been wanting to see him again in the Polo Fields, and although I was exhausted and watched the majority of the set sitting down in the back, I still enjoyed it very much. Portola set was fine too, but the sound was not as crisp as it was at Coachella and I was a bit more drunk than I wanted to be lol.
14. Jessie Ware at The Belasco: When it was announced that she was one of the openers for Harry Styles’ shows, I had been patiently waiting for her to announce some standalone shows, especially given that she didn’t tour the US after What’s Your Pleasure?. I was, of course, going to make it to the small LA shows no matter what and lucky enough to score tickets. The show itself was fantastic, specifically Free Yourself sounded fantastic live, but I would have enjoyed it even more if the sound didn’t suck at The Belasco and if it wasn’t that crowded there. Still a great show.
13. Arca at Primavera Sound LA & Portola: What a show. After her canceled shows in 2020, I also had been waiting for her to announce a US tour after the KiCK series. That still didn’t happen for some reason (maybe in 2023?), but regardless, both festival sets, slightly different from each other, were really fun.
12. Beach House at The Greek & This Ain’t No Picnic: No surprises here. BH is one of my favorite bands of all time, and I’ve seen them 10 times since 2010. I was originally planning to skip the TANP set, but I just couldn’t help myself and ended up watching the stage that they closed that night.
11. Lorde at Primavera Sound LA: First time seeing her. I was in the minority that actually enjoyed Solar Power, and seeing the songs from SP as well as the hits from past albums was a blast. I really liked the stage setup for it as well. Even though I found it a little weird that the festival was on the emptier side that night, I took full advantage of it as I was able to watch it very closely.
10. Björk at Shrine Auditorium: This was the first show of 2022 for me (interestingly the last show I saw in 2022 last week was also at this not-so-favorite-of-mine venue). If I really had the right to choose, I would probably prefer to see the Orchestra show over the Cornucopia show, but I’ll just take whatever comes my way. Obviously, it was a spectacular show.
9. Nine Inch Nails at Primavera Sound LA: First time seeing them after 2017’s FYF and Panorama shows, NIN did deliver again. My mind was blown the entire time, and especially when they played “God Break Down the Door”. Thinking about that moment, I hope I’ll get to experience their show one more time.
8. Altin Gün at Coachella: If someone came up to me 10 years ago and told me that I would listen to psych-rock cover versions of old Turkish folk songs at arguably the biggest festival in the world, I definitely wouldn’t believe any of it. But here comes 2022, and there I find myself dancing to the songs I grew up listening to. It was such an emotional and a special moment for me.
7. Nathy Peluso at Coachella & El Rey Theatre: One of my favorite discoveries of pandemic, I still think she is very underrated in the US. Her set at Coachella was at Sonora (she was closing it), and there were only like 50 people or so in the tent by the end of the show (possibly due to the clash with Doja Cat) which was sad to see. But the El Rey show was sold out, and everyone who attended possibly felt like they were part of a special show. I still keep my hopes up for her to blow up in the US.
6. Charli XCX at The Greek & Portola: With so many shows I watched in my top 25 happening at The Greek, some might think that it’s my favorite venue in LA (it’s not, The Fonda is), but it’s only because of the artists who are choosing to play there that I ended up in this venue so many times this year. In any case, both Charli XCX sets were so much fun, and hearing Crash songs live was pure bliss.
5. Godspeed You! Black Emperor at Istanbul & This Ain’t No Picnic: I was blown away when I saw that GY!BE was going to play the most iconic venue in Istanbul while I was there for only 4 days during my first Turkey trip after 3 years. I mean, what are the odds? And I was originally not going to go to this show since I was planning to see them at TANP. How silly of me. But I changed my mind the night before the concert, bought my ticket (it was far from sold out due to inflation yada yada), and what I experienced was basically indescribably good. After experiencing this show, now I wasn’t going to see them at TANP (again, how silly of me), but at the very last second I changed my mind once more, and caught them. For some reason, I have a suspicion that they’re gonna play Coachella in 2023, and I will plan on skipping them until I change my mind at the last minute and see them one more time.
4. Dua Lipa at The Forum: Another show I decided to get a ticket the day before it happened (in my defense, the tickets were very sold out, and the tickets I got had an obstructed view). Regardless, this was one of the best pop shows I’ve seen, and I really hope she’s one of Coachella headliners next year as I cannot wait to see Future Nostalgia songs one more time.
3. The Chemical Brothers at Portola: After seeing them for the first time in 2019, I was extremely excited to see them headline the inaugural Portola fest. This time I made a mission to myself to be close to the stage, so I camped for a couple of hours before the show (having to see a very mediocre James Blake set, and having to miss OPN). It was definitely worth it. With Aphex Twin, they are probably the best electronic music acts out there right now, in my opinion.
2. Rosalía at Youtube Theater: It took me more than a few listens to warm up to her last record, but her live show made everything click in just so many ways. I was not super happy at first that I got tickets from the upper bowl level, but by the end of the show, it turned out to be the better seats as watching the set from that angle made it even much better. I cannot wait for her to play the main stage at Coachella (please, Paul) and use that production.
1. Lady Gaga at Dodger Stadium: I guess 2022 was the year of pop shows for me. Being a fan of hers for so many years, and catching the tour behind my favorite album of hers obviously made this show very special for me. Add the incredible stadium production and hearing how great of a singer she is live easily carried this show to the top of my list. Even though there was some turmoil going into the stadium and I missed the first few minutes of the set, there wasn’t any other set in 2022 that could beat this one.
