Flaming Lips playing Yoshimi was just announced for 5/25 at The Anthem in DC. I don’t see other dates but assume this will be at least a small tour. Timing looks good for SK.
Could either see them filling the Modest Mouse slot or playing the day after BC
1/16: L'Impératrice 1/30: Jamie xx 2/1: DJ Seinfeld 2/7: Mild Minds* 3/1: Father John Misty* 3/4: knock2 3/7: Inhaler* 3/19: Confidence Man 3/23: DARKSIDE 5/8: Rüfüs Du Sol
I know I'm in the minority but I thought WotP was their best work since '06...and this is pretty much the only tour since at LEAST 2008 where Boston wasn't normally included which either A- means they add it later due to demand or B- Crash Line got em cuz the routing for a Boston date at TD works between their QC and NY show.

No ATL date either which implies they’re headlining Shaky. given the likeliness for that fest I’d say that adds to their likeliness to play BC
They're playing in the UK on the saturday what are you morons talking about??
yeah Muse in the UK that Saturday makes them almost certainly (though NOT definitely) ruled out for BC. i'm a casual Muse fan, i think they're a great festival headliner. the stage show is usually really entertaining, the music is fun and upbeat but also mostly fluff and not too cerebral. it's kinda exactly what you're (or at least i'm) looking for after 8-10 hours drinking in the sun.
General headliner thoughts:
i think Arctic Monkeys looks really likely.
i'm hoping Rage is still around but i feel like there's a shot the tour this year, even though it was delayed 18 times, was really one-and-done and they're going back into hiding.
RHCP would also definitely fit regardless of the Fenway show a couple weeks ago, especially with another new album dropping in October.
I wouldn't be shocked at The Strokes making up for this year's cancellation but I also wouldn't be shocked if we've moved on from that.
Would love it if Florence is included, it would mix up the genres/gender-bias a bit and also she was awesome at the Garden a couple weeks ago.
always always down for Kendrick, especially after missing the Garden show last month, but there's no indication he'll still be touring at all next year so no reason to even speculate he's in the discussion.
I would LOVE to get Odesza and agree with whoever said they're probably headliner-or-bust at this point, but it feels unlikely to me that the BC organizers would book 2 older rock bands and then one younger EDM act as headliners. More likely it's like this year with 3 rock, or at least the third not being so far off (Florence, for example.) Could see Odesza in the mix if we move away from the 90s rock bands and get something like AM/Florence/Odesza.
Any three-way combination of any of the 7 bolded names above would be absolutely great news for me. I'm down with all of them.
Paramore isn't headlining Boston Calling in a million years (or next year). They've only booked arena and stadium headliners to close Green since the move to Harvard.
The only way this is happening is if they scale back the size of the festival and return to the same sort of headliners they had at City Hall Plaza (if, for example, they continued to run the event at Harvard, but scaled back to fewer stages and less space. But I don't see that happening.)

Well, Rage has 2023 dates booked from Feb - early April, so booking a few festivals at the end of that run seems likely.
Paramore got popular again. They may not be a HL, but they're definitely closing Red or Blue depending on who else is playing that day.
yup. Wait and see with Paramore. they’re in a weird spot right now but after the new record I think its likely they reach headline status. They’re lower than I expected them to be billed at ACL but they have a massive following in the northeast. if they dont headline theyre closing out red for sure. they’ll be 4th overall, same spot Rufus was billed in

Even if this is their most successful album to date and turns into a modern-day version of Frampton Comes Alive, selling millions of copies, no one can know that by the time that Boston Calling needs to book its headliners.
They fail the "Big Festival Headliner Litmus Test," which is that there aren't a lot of people who casually like the band or have a passing familiarity with them even if they're not big fans. This is how the reduced influence of terrestrial radio hurts artists. There's no WFNX or WBCN providing exposure to newer bands. You've got to stumble across them online, read about them on social media, and then check them out if they sound like something you'd enjoy.
They don't have one song remotely as well known as "Closer," "Hurt," "Enter Sandman," "Mr. Brightside," or "Lose Yourself," to name a few massive hits by recent Boston Calling headliners. The only punk pop bands big enough to headline BC are Green Day, Blink-182 (especially with UFO guy likely to rejoin the band), Fall Out Boy, and Panic! at the Disco. Unless you consider Miley Cyrus, Demi Lovato, and Olivia Rodrigo to be punk pop (which describes some of their music, if not all of it), that is.
Paramore has already played the blue closing spot, idk why they’d come back and do that again. If they’re playing next year they’re headlining
Actually, no. Countless music artists play festivals for a second or third time and are roughly at the same place in the lineup, just like they return to the same sized-venues year after year.
The only way for bands that have been around for a long time to jump up the poster is to breakup or go on hiatus for at least 10 years and then do a reunion tour.
Face reality. There aren't 30K-50K people in the Boston area who'd pay to see Paramour. If there were, they'd not only headline Boston Calling, but they'd play the Garden or Fenway on headlining tours that come through the area.
They theoretically could be a third HL - but if that's the case, they prob went big on a 1 or a 1-2 combo.
The smallest top line booking, venue-wise, they've had since moving to Harvard was Jack White, who's done local shows at a reduced capacity set-up at Fenway, where they only sold bleacher seats, I believe, and a more recent show at Agganis Arena. But every other headliner since the move has been an established arena headliner (or Chance The Rapper, who certainly seemed like he was headed in that direction at the time.)
People took me to task here when I suggested, in 2015, that Hozier should have headlined City Hall Plaza over Alabama Shakes, mostly because I was and am a huge fan and Take Me To Church had turned into that rare 21st Century huge radio hit that crossed-over to many different audiences. But I was wrong. He's certainly now in that 5-10K ticket range that puts you at the Wang for two nights (like he did in late 2019), MGM Music Hall, LB Pavilion, Agganis Arena, or headlining Boston Calling during its City Hall Plaza era.
Based upon where their careers are now, both Hozier and Paramore are Red or Blue closers at what Boston Calling is today, but neither is a Green headliner. (Which is absolutely fine with me. I'd rather see an artist on Blue than anywhere else at Boston Calling. Hozier's 2019 Blue set was my favorite performance of the four of his that I've seen, and I'm also glad that I've gotten to see Frightened Rabbit, The Decemberists, Car Seat Headrest, Brandi Carlile, and Goose at Blue, over the years. There's just something about the vibe there that's really special.)
