If the Academy is factoring in RT audience ratings they should be abolished.
Don’t worry. The more the Oscars are detached from general audiences, the faster their ratings will fall. And this is the same institution that gave best editing to Bohemian Rhapsody. I’m all for NWH getting nominated just for the sheer outrage it’ll bring from cinephiles.
If the Academy is factoring in RT audience ratings they should be abolished.
It's definitely not something the Academy voters themselves are factoring in when casting ballots, it's more of a tool that trackers can use to make statistics and therefore make informed guesses on what will or won't win. Afterall the RT audience score has only been around a couple of years. It's more like someone with a blog was like "hey did you ever notice that if you look at all of the BP winners RT audience scores from the last 30 years, most are in the 80s and 90s, with the lowest being 73%." Maybe it means something maybe it doesn't.
Awards stats and tracking is all a meaningless dumb game in the end because every year one of the long-standing stats gets broken.
Sasha Stone has made an interesting case about the new factor of " RT audience ratings" that wasn't really a thing before. No film in recent film history that's won Best Picture has an audience rating below 70%, but The Power of the Dog's is at 61%.
Box office can be a factor too, especially when it's a game changer and too big to ignore (Avatar) . A lot of people were pushing The Force Awakens in 2015, but that wasn't as universally beloved as No Way Home (audience rating 99%).
There is enough there for NWH to sneak in a nomination. I think this year the Academy is going back to 10 Best Picture nominees like in 2009 and 2010, and ditching the preferential ballot, and the 10 nominees was more or less a response to The Dark Knight snub in 2008.
Disney didn't push TFA or TLJ for Best Picture. Sony sounds like it's pushing NWH. And why the fuck not, at this point?

Kristen Stewart getting snubbed is all kinds of bullshit.
On the TV side, seeing all of the Squid Game and White Lotus love is kind of cool though.

These snubs remind me how much the Oscars are a joke. French Dispatch, Green Knight, Pig completely snubbed. Don’t have a big studio backing you? We don’t care about your film.
Pretty happy overall considering these are Oscar nominations. I really thought they were going to only give Drive My Car an international feature nom but I'm very happy to be wrong. Jesse Plemmons, Jessie Buckley and JK Simmons are three of my favorite actors but I'm not sure I would choose these performances to be nominated. I think Don't Look Up is going to win best picture and the internet is going to freak out and the general public will have no problem with it.
I think people gave too much credit to PTA for her performance for her to get recognized. I saw a number of things suggesting that one of the strengths of the movie is that PTA knows how to shoot Alana Haim because of their previous working relationship. I think the combination of auteur director and first time actor let people buy into this even if this outlook totally minimizes how amazing Alana is in the movie. Or I'm overthinking it and she was overlooked because a bunch of awards favorite actors gave more oscar friendly performances in that category.

Every year it gets harder for me to take the Oscars seriously. I didn't ever feel like any of these films stood a serious chance though, apart from small outside chance for Pig.
I still take them more seriously than the Globes. There are good years and bad years for the Academy. All it takes for me is seeing something like Bong Joon Ho walking around with five oscars in his arms to keep my interest sustained. Years like that when expectations are vehemently defied to everyone's delight (except Sam Mendes').
Even if expected frontrunner The Power of the Dog cleans house this year it would be big. Campion is overdue and if she gets director it would be back to back years for women directors which would be huge. And of course if it wins picture it would be ushering in a new legitimacy for streaming platforms in the race. Especially sweet if outspoken anti-streamer Spielberg lost to a Netflix movie.

dispatch being shut out is pretty surprising it had a lot of early buzz, Wes is typically looked at, cast are all big names, the movie was good, etc
