It was a nice day, definitely more packed than Cruel World’s first day. M.I.A., Cut Copy, and Franz Ferdinand were my favorites. Hope it comes back next year.

I'll do a more in-depth recap tomorrow, but Franz and Cut Copy were the two best sets of the day and it's a shame they overlapped a bit. Shins and Interpol sounded great too, they gave you what you wanted. Peaches surprised me, was never a big fan but her set was awesome. Bloc Party was a mess, and only partly because of technical issues.
Logistically sound. Entrance was extremely quick, and even the long food and bathroom lines moved really quickly.

Interpol was fucking great. So glad they just played the hits. That might have been my favorite set from them.
It was nice seeing Bloc Party again but the sound was definitely a little rough.
Speaking of rough sound, !!! sounded pretty bad for the first half. I ended up leaving after All U Writers to get over to Wolf Parade. Wolf Parade, The Hives, and Bloc Party all had pretty bad sound from VIP. The Hives are still fun though! "Best festival of 2005!"
I've never been much of a Modest Mouse fan but I do like their live performance better than records.

Okay, in-depth recap. Strolled in during Islands very easily - security didn't even bother with us since we didn't have bags, which was almost concerning? Ah well, strolled over to Peaches, which was a better time than I expected. A 5-year-old ran by crying, so I guess they had just seen their first non-maternal boob. I noticed a lot of parents with their kids, and they seemed to be young parents in their 30's, so I guess it's now time for my generation to have to learn that your kids aren't gonna have as great of a time as you at music festivals and they'll probably hate your music anyway.
Was excited to hear Wolf Parade play "Apologies to the Queen Mary", but I felt like they didn't fully hit their stride until "Dinner Bells", and by that point the set was nearly over. Met up with my group for Cut Copy, and that was a party (though also the one set where I was a bit drunk). Mostly sobered up for Franz, who were probably my favorite set of the day, and I was pleasantly surprised they pulled out "Jacqueline", my favorite track of theirs.
Then there's Bloc Party. As I alluded to a few pages back, I kinda wanted to see Santigold instead, but my group really wanted to hear the 3 "Silent Alarm" tracks they'd play, so I stayed. And...yikes. The technical issues and random falling water were just festival fuckery and were eventually resolved, but that was also a really bad setlist, and I'm continually perplexed why they think people want to hear "Ratchet". It was cute how the sun finally came out during "This Modern Love" I guess. Thankfully, The Shins brought me back to good spirits. I'd forgotten how much I loved The Shins, and will definitely have to consider the "Oh Inverted World" set at the Orpheum, prices pending.
Modest Mouse have good days and bad days, and I'd call this a good day. Though they probably had a bit too much new material like Bloc Party, they redeemed it with some more unpredictable cuts like "Bukowski" and the absolutely awesome "Spitting Venom" closer. I knew I was never gonna see an Interpol set as good as the "Turn on the Bright Lights" show a few years ago, but this was still one of the better times I've seen them. It felt frontloaded at first, but then they kept going with the hits and I realized Interpol have way more bangers than I thought. Even the recent material sounded good!
Overall a fun way to ease back into the festival world (my last was ACL 2019), hoping No Picnic is run just as well as this was. Feist was in the audience somewhere, so maybe they'll book her for the next rendition of this.
-Super easy in and out, security a breeze and parking pretty easy -Place was pretty crowded overall. Always a big line for the rest rooms (they needed another non-VIP restroom line) and afternoon drink lines were brutal. We waited like 15-20 mins for a craft beer toward the end of the Hives -The Hives: B, solid show, I can do without some of the theatrics like doing a 10 minute band introduction in their last song, taking it like 15 minutes like he was Bruce Springsteen or something -Franz Ferdinand: A, probably the best 'shut up and play the hits' set, its why we all came out to this festival and they delivered -Bloc Party: C+, maybe the most disappointing show of the day. Some odd technical difficulties in the beginning (did someone spill a bunch of water on stage or something?) that made them pause as soon as they came out and shook them a bit because Kele referenced it a few times throughout the show. Only 3 Silent Alarm songs, played a more modern set, something in the sound seemed off too -The Shins: B+, sounded really good, not typically a fan but good show -Modest Mouse: A-, best time I've seen them of the three live shows. Played some of the hits, sounded tight and like they wanted to be there -Interpol: B+, you know what you're going to get, and that's exactly what you want at this fest.\

The water thing for Bloc Party happened during The Hives also. It had rained a little the last couple of days oddly enough. The water collected on the canopy covering the main stage. It came down twice during The Hives. And then Bloc Party is actually did something bad which was mess up equipment

The number of Strokes shirts I saw would make The Strokes fit if they weren't already doing TANP, so I say let's turn the dial back a little further and give us the year 2000. Give us The New Pornographers playing "Mass Romantic", Bright Eyes performing "Fevers and Mirrors", book freaking Doves, and I dunno, let Placebo play for the hell of it.
Lcd Soundsystem The Strokes Arcade Fire Arctic Monkeys The Killers Vampire Weekend Dfa 1979 Klaxons Le Tigre Hot Chip CSS Hercules and Love Affair Soulwax TVOTR Clap Your Hands Say Yeah Head Automatica Walkmen The Go Team Scissor Sisters Cobra Starship Silversun Pickups Whitest Boy Alive Rilo Kiley Editors Friendly Fires Lykke Li Metric Junior Senior The Subways Art Brut The Bravery Moving Units Hot Hot Heat Ladytron Fischerspooner Kaiser Chiefs Doves M83 The Kills Futureheads Fiery Furnaces
Main stage going Spoon > Rilo Kiley > TVOTR > Arcade Fire
Big acts on the second stage are a The Walkmen reunion, Soulwax, and Broken Social Scene
I think splitting how they did at the end of the day with the indie/rock stuff vs the dance acts was the right way to go about it. It didnt get crowded up front after Bloc Party til Interpol was going to start. And even then it seems people just went home after M.I.A. cause the crowd barely went to the last speaker tower.
go with Klaxons, Soulwax and Hot Chip to close it out on second stage.

ratchet is my favorite song by them and probably the only one I’d want to hear. That song slaps I dunno what you’re talking about
