I love Ben & Jerry's ice cream, although they really need to create ice cream flavors tied to better bands than Phish (excellent musicians, but they couldn't write a halfway decent song if their lives depended upon it, and their singing is absolutely horrendous.
Who is going to a Phish show for the lyrical content? I'm not.
They could have been an amazing instrumental jazz-rock fusion band, but what's wrong with their music isn't limited to the lyrics. Nobody ever compared James Brown or AC/DC to Leonard Cohen; great songs don't require great lyrics. But Phish's vocal melodies are piss poor, from a compositional perspective, and their singing is even worse. They make Jerry Garcia sound like Frank Sinatra, by comparison. The Dead knew that you didn't need great singers, but you needed passably decent ones singing very well-written songs around which you build your jams.
Someone on the subreddit is teasing that it's an indie rock band from the northeast
I'd be *very* happy if that turns out to be the case. There aren't many still-active bands that I've never seen, but really want to see, and The Strokes are at the top of that list.
Feel exactly the same about The Strokes, which is the main reason why I'm going to Shaky Knees in 2 weeks.
We'll have to wait and see RHCP tour dates/openers, but if The Strokes are on the Gillette/Fenway show then they obviously won't be headlining BC. LCD seems more likely between the two, though I got the feeling the 20-date Brooklyn run would be standalone and not lead into shows around the country.
I guess the most important question is - do we have any reason to believe that whoever posted the "indie band from the northeast" thing is credible?

My friends who arent going to BC (but live in Boston) are all pissed off that the Strokes aren't going to be at Fenway and now are planning a Chicago weekend to see RHCP/Strokes... instead of just going to BC... so after saying "they're my #1 band i want to see live that i havent yet" i might end up seeing them 3 times in the next 12 months. interesting turn of events.
Feels like BC should/will announce them as the last headliner as the next "artist drop" now that it's so obvious, right?

It's obvious to us, but I imagine for most of the general public it might not be.
Is boston calling just like any other fest where you can scoop up weekend passes the week prior for cheap? Just to see Rage in Buffalo is $290 for two tickets in the 100 level. Do we think they will get 2 hours? Foos too?

If they could give Mumford and Sons a 2 hour set in 2017 I'm sure they can fit in a 2 hour set for Foos, probably Rage too. There's usually been specific days that have completely sold out, like the Saturday of 2019, and I believe the Rage day sold out pretty fast before covid hit, but if you're looking for a full weekend pass it might be a bit easier to come by
I really hope this is true, and it's either true or one other possibility is in play: that a member of The Strokes has an outstanding warrant against them in Massachusetts and doesn't want to set foot in the state.
The band hasn't played in MA since 2005 or 2006. Granted, they haven't toured a lot over the course of the last 15 years, but they've toured enough that the absence of a Boston or Mansfield date just seems weird. I know that Casablancas and Hammond have played the area many times with side projects (In the 90's, I worked at a Kendall Square telemarketing center with a guitarist who later moved to NYC and wound up touring with Hammond), but one of the other guys may have a personal reason for staying out of the commonwealth.
I'm probably wrong and I hope I'm wrong, but it's worth a passing thought, if not much more than that.

Don't forget that the Strokes are playing both weekends of Primavera, the week after Boston Calling. Very easy for them to make the stop in Boston on the way to Barcelona

phoebe subbing for foo fighters is ideal since theyd be the headliner i have the least amount of interest in seeing out of foos, strokes, rage
If Phoebe is playing, she's probably 3rd or 4th depending on how they rank The Strokes
There is no world in which Phoebe Bridgers would be billed over The Strokes on a lineup. Not this year, not next year, probably not the year after that. I love her and yeah maybe it could happen at some point in the future, sure, but they're still The Strokes.
I'd think Phoebe would be a good Blue stage closer, depending on how the lineup plays out. She doesn't seem to gel enough with the headliners to close Red. But she might be too big for Blue.

Phoebe on Red or Blue right before The Strokes seems like the most natural indie rock transition, among the announced acts. Although Foos night works better for me, because I wouldn't want to miss a minute of Phoebe or The Strokes, and there's often literally no time for a pit stop between subheadliners and headliners at BC. I didn't appreciate hearing The Killers open with Mr. Brightside while I was standing in a porta-potty.
Blue vs. RTJ will be whomever the big Americana name happens to be. They might dial down Americana overall, since they're completing with Wilco's Solid Sound Festival that weekend, but I can't see them leaving it out of the mix entirely.

feels pretty unlikely that you get a BRM show right before the National kick off a Euro tour just a couple days later, I'd wager Dessner would be getting ready for that, but stranger things have happened

BC is the only major US fest BRM have played too, the Dessners also helped the fest out in the early days
I'm thinking someone more obviously Americana...Isbell, Dawes, or Carlile come to mind (unless a radius clause for BC, Newport, and/or Beach Road fouls that up.)

I actually wonder if the National would be in play. No US dates announced, could easily see a late spring tour before they head off to Europe for June
