First thought is Tomato Head since it’s in the area unless Dave Maynar or marcoolio has better suggestions.
I’m doing early shows Friday-Sunday and thinking I may do the nature walkthrough on Sunday morning. I can make something work though.
I'm game for any day. How many people are yall thinking? I am a huge fan of brunch at bistro by the bijou personally, but obviously theres like 10 good brunch places in a 1 mile radius. Are you doing the soundwalk thing? I checked it out once. Story to follow but marking it in spoilers.
So I match with this gal from tinder and she seems cool or whatever. We decide to meet up that friday and she wants to go check out the nature walk/music thing set up for Big Ears. Sick, whatever, sounds good.
So later we make concrete plans and she says she wants to go at like 7pm (this is at some point in mid october). I say the park closes at dusk so idk if the gate will be down, she says it is staying open late for a movie.
"Would you be up for grabbing food or something beforehand?" "No I just wanna do the nature walk."
Weighing my options I was like well fuck it, she wants to go hiking at night I guess Im down. So I show up to the park and meet up with her, seems to be going okay. We start up the app that plays the music and start walking around (as it rapidly gets dark).
As its getting darker and darker the music picks up and I swear it sounded like the damn soundtrack to silence of the lambs. Eerie sharp strings, uncomfortable rhythm/percussion, straight up sinister. My date makes a few nervous jokes about how we might get murdered/find a body. We press on. Shortly after we hear screaming. She jumps and I ask what the fuck that is. She tells me the movie the park stayed open for is "the shining" so we decide to go to the quarry side of the park where hopefully we cant hear any screams.
At this point she pulls out a giant maglite with a literal baseball bat handle and tells me her dad got it for her to protect herself. I begin to keep my distance in a much more measured/intentional fashion for fear of getting brained by this chick and tossed in the quarry.
We reach the bottom of the quarry and her flashlight starts to flicker. The music reaches an erich zann-like fever pitch. We decide its a pretty good time to head back to the car and her light dies. She immediately starts hyperventilating. I turn my phone flashlight on and keep my distance so I dont get a hole in my skull. We eventually make our way back and I suggest perhaps we dont listen to the music anymore since she is freaking the fuck out.
Go our separate ways after we go to get drinks, she orders a vodka soda and drinks it in one extended gulp like a shot and just stands there. "Uh did you want anything else" "No I'm good" Weird tinder date cycle continues.
alawre are flexible on spot. We just ate at Tomato Head, and I don't recall her saying anything hateful about the bistro.
On your other topic, our first date included the phrase, "Do you want to come down into this basement with me? There's something really cool I wanna show you."
Just looking at the schedule and what I'm prioritizing in the early going each day I think Sunday would make the most sense for brunch or some sort of meetup on our end. Could make almost anything work though! Definitely hoping to do the nature walk at some point as well, and may try to find an excursion or two before the festival each day if anyone has good recs for downtown (stuff like museums, etc. that might be open in the mornings)
Knoxville Museum of Art opens at 10am most days. East Tennessee history museum opens at 9am. Not sure about other ones off the top of my head.
tickets bought! hotel booked! and flight options are looking terrible. are there any heavier or more upbeat acts that i might be unfamiliar with?
Dan Weiss Starebaby is probably the heaviest band on the lineup (unless they add Divide + Dissolve last minute). The problem is its during that Fennesz/Sparks travesty. I’d also say 75 Dollar Bill if you haven’t seen them. This time it’s the big band but they’ve slayed as a duo every time I’ve seen them.

If it helps, flying into Knoxville is pretty much always terrible. You know it's bad when people sometimes get a cheaper deal by flying into Nashville or Atlanta then renting a car to go the rest of the way.

tronik is doing that exact thing. Flying into Nashville and driving over. I guess Knoxville doesn’t have Southwest?

This is most likely not going to happen... but I noticed that Fennesz's tour schedule lists him for two dates at Big Ears (Thurs & Fri), while the Big Ears schedule only has him for Thurs. I didn't think much about it, but yesterday Big Ears said, "This year, he’ll once again perform on opening night at Big Ears, with perhaps a special treat to be revealed sometime later." ... is it too big of a wish that he's going to announce a second show with David Sylvian? If nothing else, maybe I'll be able to see Sparks after all!

I'm immediately bought into this narrative and plan to spread it as fact
So y'all, what is everyone expecting to be the top five most crowded sets? It always surprises me, and I don't wanna be caught off guard.
Moses Sumney, Sparks, Annette Peacock, and the two New Masada Quartet sets.
Thanks. I felt like Sparks would be up there but didn't know if I was just assuming bc I actually know them. 😄 Moses Sumney doesn't surprise me either. I think I was gonna try to catch half that, so I might need to adjust the plan.

If this had happened 2 years ago, they would be playing the Bijou and it would have been filled. But with the semi-recent (and well deserved) hype following the documentary and the film "Annette" they're going to cast a much wider net... I anticipate a line to get in and an "at capacity" set.

Moses Sumney is my biggest can't-miss, I'm blocking out a full hour before his set starts to get over there. Was hoping to catch most of Bill Callahan before heading over for Sparks but I guess if it fills up I'll be able to see them at THING fest later this summer.
Will make a note on my schedule to leave Sudan Archives early to get there with enough time for the first Zorn Masada set. Worst-case scenario we'd catch the second one (would love to see Yves hometown show if possible though)
I'm kinda hoping having Patti Smith doing two separate sets will help out with the crowd demand as well, but could see that being a full house
