I know it was always about feeding the military industrial complex, but wow it's pretty sad/fucked up that all of Afghanistan outside Kabul fell to the Taliban in a week.
There literally was no point for being there 20 years and we spent God knows how much money to do basically nothing.

And they’ve already made their way into Kabul with the president fleeing.

The women and girls who will suffer tremendously under Taliban rule are who haunt me the most. Some of these women and girls have never known oppressive Taliban rule; they've been able to go to school, to work, to live as regular members of society. Now they'll almost certainly be subjugated to the horrors only known by their parents and older family members and friends. It'd be like if the U.S. suddenly decided to go back to Jim Crow-era laws and segregation for black people. Unspeakable and evil.

For me it's the translators and other native support staff. They helped the American military, now the military is leaving them out to dry.

Genuine question: what were we supposed to do in this situation? And what do we do in the coming decades as limited resources and climate change cause refugees and government upheavals throughout the world at unstoppable rates?

Not start wars and be world police, I guess. Unlikely, though.
Newsom sucks but him being recalled would be a disaster.
Can anyone explain what's going on with Trudeau and this snap election in Canada also?
My understanding (proxy via sister who is canadian and currently going to school in canada): much of their covid response has had people claiming tyranny, etc. His response is to say if it's tyrannical then lets have a vote and see who the population want making choices. Bit of a ballsy risk, reminds me of brexit.

It's only going to get worse. So many nutjobs are just frothing at the mouth at the prospect of violence. Some groups are literally training for an upcoming fight.

Surprised to see this thread inactive after the tragedy of what happened in Afghanistan today. Feels like this administration is crumbling in on itself.

I had just come here to check on that. So horrible. Fuck ISIS.

Feels like the media has a vested interest in us being in Afghanistan and letting more Americans get blown up indefinitely.

Possibly, but the way this was handled is an embarrassment.

The whole things an absolute tragedy, politics are my passion but I know I’m not welcome here as a member of a 3rd party.
