What are the pros/cons of the different places to stay as a stopgap on the way to bonnaroo? I did the sleeping in the car at Wal-Mart thing several years back. Is that still doable? What are the rates like on KOA camping? At this point should I just join the modern world and get an AirBNB?
What're yalls's favorite spots to stay if you're showing up in the wee hours before Thursday and are weak enough to need sleep?
Emoney serves more of a purpose than any of you, especially Nate, whose incessant, garbled ramblings are so mindless and pointless that I get depressed just seeing them.
I’ve never done KOA, but I think their spots sell fairly quickly. You might still be able to crash at the Walmart fer a bit, but I dunno ‘bout sleepin’ overnight.
Of course as long as you’re GA you can just come in and set up camp on Wednesday.

I always just come on Wednesday (might as well get my money's worth), but I would suggest AirBnB. A quick look shows places less than $60 and it prevents you from waking up in the sun and having to pack/unpack. KOA is probably gonna run you about $40 and that's about an hour away since the ones in Manchester seem to be more expensive (won't give me a quote) for that date.
There are several hotels close to Bonnaroo. I'll bet you could just park in their lot and catch some zzzzzs there. Or there is a big car dealership across from Walmart--you could park there but don't sleep too late or they may sell your car with you still in it.

I’m fairly certain that the ol’ POD 1/ BFE is used only as volunteer and vendor campin’ now. Since my wife has joined me fer annual trips to The Farm we’ve usually been parked close to the ol’ POD 3 location so our journey to TO hasn’t been horribly painful.
And nothin’ will ever be worse than Super BFE in 2011 when me and my buddies were out in Camp Stewie Griffin a solid 30-45 minute walk to Centeroo.

This is correct. Pod 1 is done. It's still a crapshoot year to year where you will be placed. BUt Wednesday night at Roo is consistently my funnest party night of the year and I can't believe people miss it if they have the option.
Due to a work obligation, I can't leave for Roo until like 11 a.m. Thursday. Very sad to miss Wednesday party night. Pour one out for me.

Ever since I found out you could get on The Farm a day early back in 2009 I’ve made it in by Wednesday night. Except the previously mentioned 2011 when we came in Thursday mornin’ and were parked the farthest away ever!
I used to do dog agility and had a conversion van. After the meets I used to sleep in the van and I'd stay in police department parking lots. Felt totally safe. Don't know if that's a good idea for Bonnaroo though...the cops probably would think it was like a food delivery..."hey look Bubba, the wooks are turning THEMSELVES in!!"

Yeah, I think even in a totally clean travel vehicle you’d be invitin’ suspicion just due to the overall environment.

If you'll get into Manchester on Wednesday, I'd say just go into Bonnaroo like everyone else here recommends. If you'll be somewhere else, I'd look for an Airbnb first. I only used one for the first time in February, and it wasn't exactly dirt cheap (Columbus, OH right in the city), but I'll definitely try that again next time I need a rental. Anything in or right near Manchester is likely to be fully booked, and/or pretty expensive.
I've done Wednesday 6 times, and it's a must. Got the now-closed Pod 1 BFE once, Pod 10 once, and Pod 2 four times. That's coming in through the East tollbooth, not the highway entrance. If I make it this year, I'll definitely be there Wednesday before dark. And if I convince anyone from here to go, I'll just be happy to be back, wherever we end up. The plan if I end up rolling solo is to bring a wagon and probably hike my shit over to Tent Only.
Last year was the first year we went early and got there at 5 on Wednesday and it was a great experience. The tent was set up for the first time in 9 years while there was light out and the plazas really made Wednesday night a blast. Everyone was partying and it was one of my favorite parts of the weekend. Highly recommend it
As others have said, if you arrive Wednesday, just get in line for GA camping entry.
If you need/want to stay somewhere else on Wednesday night, the KOA is out. Wednesday night is part of their Bonnaroo weekend package and Wednesday can't be purchased separately. But, you can camp at the Old Stone Fort State Park in Manchester. It's only 5 miles from the Farm. $25, RVs too. Plenty of sites available:
If we rewind to Tuesday night, then the KOA is also available with campsites for about $54 for two and $11 for each additional camper (tax included). I'll be there - hit me up.
Myself, my s/o and our friend arrived at the East tollbooth entrance around noon on Wednesday. We got a good spot in a friendly neighbor's lawn for like $10 and just hung out with a bunch of other prospective gate crashers until everything opened up around 5. Kind of crazy to see the vibe turn from chilling on lawn chairs to frantically getting in line as soon as the gate opened up, though -- reminded me of that video of the Croatian firefighters jumping into action during the World Cup a few years back. Rained like hell, too, which was cool. Temperature was literally like low 70s the whole time we were setting up.
Edit: Should mention, we got into Pod 2. I guess this year won't be random, which sort of saddens me -- no more thrill of the unknown, and probably way more gate crashers.
If you want a good spot, I'd probably go as early as possible Wednesday, maybe like 11am.
^ Unless there are further changes to entry time and/or parkin’ the gates don’t officially open until 6pm Wednesday (not 100% on that, as they unofficially open the gates earlier to alleviate local traffic).
I sincerely hope that the traffic/entry situation is better this year. It was INEXCUSABLE last year after that many times of doin’ this same rodeo. My wife and I spent as much time in line as it took to travel from Raleigh, NC (roughly some 9+ hours). Honestly that is he biggest reason I don’t want to go back. It was that infuriatin’.
