I’m rewatching yesterday sets. First Aid Kit was good. Might check them out on the Farm. Børns set started out eh but really built later on! Overall good. Wish his 2016 Roo set didn’t have those shitty sound issues.
I enjoyed Beyonce's set, but it didn't make me flip my shit after it got rolling and the initial hype died down. The setup was amazing with the entire marching band and rows of dancers, but honestly by halfway through the set I was kinda over that aspect of it and ready for a change. I don't dislike Beyonce by any means, but I only really vibe with about half of her popular discog. This performance didn't change that for me. She's a wonderful performer and talented singer, but last night I felt fine heading to bed halfway through the set (right before the guests, unfortunately), and this morning after rewatching it in its entirety, I'm still okay with that decision. If you're a big Bey fan though, this performance was surely above and beyond.
Also JUICY JAY if your name is Craig I think I kicked you out by accident yesterday. We've had a bunch of random people come in and immediately start messing with the stream, and it seemed like that was happening again.
I notice one of Jungle's live singers is different. Too bad, I really liked the other guy's charisma and voice. The harmonies are just a tad different and I don't think I like them quite as much. I love Jungle's live shows, though. Worried about them in the Roo heat, though. They're such good, chill night music.
It’s a bit funny and ironic seeing a lot of people all over Esteban for being critical of Bey’s set having significant lip syncing and faux instrumentals playing when most people here are critical when DJs and other bands just “press play”. Seems like a double standard. I personally really liked Bey’s set but the fact that much of it was “pre-recorded” is a huge let down, especially for a headliner that has the resources to have everything played “live”.
And personally, this wasn’t a matter of theatrics vs. musicianship as someone previously stated. Nothing that the brass / strings did during that entire set should have precluded them from not “playing. Take a look at Byrne’s set for example; yes it’s a smaller scale but everything was live, and arguably the choreagraphy in his set was much more intricate and extensive than anything Bey’s brass / strings had to do.
I love Byrne a lot more than I love Beyoncé but arguing that his choreography was more intricate and extensive than hers is fucking hilarious.
Idk what kind of restream I'm watching at this point but the Flatbush Zombies are hype asf, Mojave is packed aswell.
edit: for those going to Coachella next weekend, I feel like if you want to make it even in the Mojave for the set of Brockhampton I think it's best you get in before Flatbush Zombies start because there's no way you can get it lol.

This is the first message board I've ever been on, the only reason I joined is because I love Bonnaroo and wanted to read and talk about it all year long.

There’s a huge difference between dancer choreagraphy vs musician choreagraphy. Beyonce’s 100 dancers have nothing to do with the fact that her brass and strings were largely not playing while spending much of her set stationary on a riser. What I saw from Byrne, although smaller in numbers, was much more difficult from a musical perspective; they were consistently moving in highly choreagrphed positions with extremely intricate timing. Just because Beyonce had more “numbers” doesn’t mean her musicians were doing more (choreography speaking).

“But she’s lip-syncing” is both an incredibly lazy and not really accurate criticism. That’s the issue.
She sampled Nina Simone, Fela Kuti, and Sister Nancy, covered Dawn Penn’s “You Don’t Love Me”, reunited with Destiny’s Child, played the whole set with a freaking sick HBCU marching band, which involved remixing her songs to suit the band, took no breaks for two hours, referenced Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, etc etc and all people can come up with was “she was lip syncing” (she wasn’t) and the band wasn’t plugged in (if you could see that you were focused on the wrong damn thing).
The only reasonable criticism I’ve heard is King T saying HCBU bands are boring. That’s crazy, but at least it makes logical sense.
Excited to see if Noname brings out Chance or any other guests. I think Joey Purp lives in LA now, maybe him. Hope she finally has more than the one new song she played a snippet of when I saw her last November

I don’t really care so much about Bey’s use of of minimal lip-syncing, that seems to be fairly standard in many “pop” acts. But when everyone gushes about Beyonce having a marching band and then that marching band wasn’t playing for much of the set, when there wasn’t really a reason IMO that they couldn’t have “played”, I think that’s a fair criticism. My point with Byrne was that a different artist had more extensive musician choreagraphy and still “played” their instruments, so I don’t think it’s a stretch to question why Bey’s musicians didn’t, especially when people are lauding the set being something that set a new standard or can’t be outdown for years.

Why do you think my critique is only with HBCU bands? HBCU bands are certainly more entertaining than regular marching bands but after a while, they both get boring. KEY PHRASE: after a while. They're great for 15 minute half time shows or for stuff in between plays.
Plus, defending lip syncing is just stupid. The theatrics were cool (and we don't even know how much of that she was responsible for), but unless her voice was dead or someone made her, lip syncing is just insulting and lazy. Every live performer should be able to perform on their own and if they can't, then it's not a live musical performance; it's just a show.

In regards to the Byrne-Beyonce comparison, I'm not sure you can compare them since they are two different types of movements, but Beyonce's choreography did allow for more freedom of motion whereas Byrne's was very precise and on the mark.
