Sorry if this has been best into nauseam. This year will be the first time since 2005 that I will not be attending Bonnaroo. The lineup was the first reason, and the schedule is the second. Does it seem reasonable that they can't afford to pay for the longer sets that we have grown accustomed to?

This started going that way for awhile now, with last year being the first big push on shorter set times. I remember being upset that Arcade Fire only played 88 minutes as a headliner...Maybe they were just ahead of the curve.

In terms of costs, one thing they seem unwilling to finance is the cost of running stages/tents past 3 a.m. (Stagehands, technicians, and so forth.) They've also been booking younger artists and bands that don't have enough material to fill an hour, let alone 90-120 minutes. Both of these points have been made before, but I think they factor into your question.

Seeing the hundreds of people in centeroo on Saturday lined up for the Christmas barn and thousands more sitting around looking for things to do, was pretty obvious. It didn't help that the music ended at 3 and the robe rage went till 4:30. It left everyone with an hour and a half of nothing, then trying to squeeze everyone in the barn for the 90s rave. Lame. I hated kalliope for the most part because of sound bleed, but it at least gave people something to do. Or just let the artists play till whenever like they used to. It made the camp grounds pretty unbearable to sleep in.

I have heard this but I'm confused. They really can't afford to pay stage hands and technicians to work for an extra 30-60 minutes? That sounds like an easily avoidable problem.
The problem is that all sets are shorter, so it's not just 30-60mins. It's an extra 30-60mins for each set. And it's not just stage works, it's also the cost of power in addition to everything else it takes to run a stage. So yes, I'm sure they're saving loads by cutting down set times overall. The real issue is that if it's a question of money, why did set times get cut so drastically after making a deal with LN? It's not like they're exactly strapped for cash. The best thing about Bonnaroo that set it apart from other festivals was the fact that is a camping fest where the music never stopped.....

I agree with every single sentiment here. Saturday night was just weird. SOOOOOOO many people wandering around looking for something to do. Seriously, if they would've just played music from the Other I'd have been happy. Then I could've hung out in the Oasis listening to some music and chatting with friends. Instead we wandered around with nothing to do, went back to camp with nothing to do, and most people were in bed by like 530-6ish, which made it really awkward for me and my friends to sit at camp talking and being loud when everyone was sleeping.
It's also just unsafe to have thousands of intoxicated people wandering around the campgrounds with nothing to do. People act stupid when they have nothing to occupy themselves...

Our group has been coming since 2010, and we said the same while looking for something to do after 3 a.m. on Saturday. "This is so weird" is exactly what we said. The kicker of all of this is they only have to do it Friday and Saturday.
I know the people from Walter Productions very well, and they emphasized to me that this year's post-festival survey responses were going to be closely reviewed (due to the large number of changes this year). Make sure to fill it out and voice this concern. All night music is/was their competitive advantage. I loved most of the changes they made (campground options, Big Red's Garage, the Other, etc.) but they can't leave patrons with two capacity-limited options after hours.

And I kept saying the same thing about it being weird. I had a newbie with me and I kept telling him that this was not normal Roo... the silent disco and christmas barn are not good enough LN centeroo options.. they just can't handle enough people. I already filled out the post-roo survey and trust me, i emphasized the lack of LN options.

I think that the difference may be that LN has higher bottom line expectations. Whereas AC/SF may have been motivated to cultivate a reputation for their brand, LN may be content to moneyball it, exchanging intangibles for cash.
Just my theory. I might be giving AC/SF too much credit and/or too much cynicism to LN. I have zero facts to back up my theory.

This tells all. Remember how shitty rock radio became in the late 90's/early 00's? Remember when indie labels and festivals offered an escape from that bullshit? Remember when they started making too much money and Live Nation wanted their cut? Repeat cycle.

Goes down smooth with a one note flavor like a chicken finger basket from Applebee's. Something to eat mindlessly for sustenance with no joy while you stare off into the middle distance. Something to listen to in the background while you stand around chatting mindlessly with your friends and drinking a watered down domestic beer and trying not to feel anything.
