Anderson Paak is who I have been telling my friends to listen to all year. I definitely feel he will headline one day. I'm usually good about calling these things too.
This is true, ultimately. It really is fun to see who eventually climbs. I never thought Phoenix was HL worthy but that happened.
I just checked Billboard's top rock songs. #1 Twenty One Pilots - Ride (#10 in Top Hot 100) #2 Twenty One Pilots - Heathens (#14 in Top Hot 100) #3 Twenty One Pilots - Stressed Out (#22 in Top Hot 100)
Agreed. So much of being a headliner is fit, type of popularity and just plain luck. The big 4 are at the point now where they are averaging around 1 recycled headliner a year. If we are talking any level of festival than sure all of these are possible. If we are looking at roo, coachella, acl and lollapalooza then I think we need realize that a lot of these on the cusp bands are going to stay there.

Yeah I think 21 Pilots will headline at least Lolla.

Holy shet. Yeah they will be headlining Firefly in the next couple years no doubt
I'm not sure there's anything Vampy Weeks can do to get over the top, to be perfectly honest. Tame Impala may have trouble too. They're both great bands with plenty of great music, but there's something a little too... anesthetic or detached about them live to me. Could be that neither lead singer has quite the cult of personality that it feels like a headliner needs. The kind of charisma that makes fans into fanatics.
I mean, it's not like Kings of Leon or The Strokes are known for being especially lively or charismatic performers. If an act is popular enough and festivals think he/she/they will move tickets, they'll receive an offer to headline.
Huh? I don't get either of these posts. The Strokes have Julian Casablancas. Like it or not, but dude has a huge fanbase of his own (not necessarily for his solo stuff too) and the other 4 Strokes have enough charisma to stand on stage like robots and still have a huge crowd go nuts.
Tame Impala way less, but they have their own fanbase/cult of personality especially around Kevin. Its a little embarrassing at times, but its definitely there.

Agreed, Tame Impala has the auteur credibility going for him since it's just one guy that's behind all the music.
A$AP Rocky has a terrible live reputation so don't think he has a shot. Foals could work but the U.S. just isn't into rock music anymore unlike in Europe (where Arctic Monkeys have been headlining for a long time now).
Flume is still more of a producer than a live performer, and needs to step up his game to advance to the next class.
As for HAIM... I know there's the push for more female headliners, but thus far that band is hot air.

The Strokes have a weird cultishness to them, and Kings of Leon are a) from Tennessee and b) the worst headliner Bonnaroo has had from at least 2010 to present

Care to elaborate? HAIM is following a path that's nearly identical to Alabama Shakes. Very successful debut album, followed by a continuous rise in popularity over the following 2-3 years. Their debut album was pretty highly regarded as well (much like Boys & Girls). Plus, it doesn't hurt that they're BFFs with T-Swift.
How popular are Alabama Shakes among young crowds? Their genre is so old fashioned that I don't see them growing much bigger.
I'm not sure what you mean by Alabama Shakes being limited by their genre/style. Their music can't really be pigeonholed into one specific genre. It's more of a combination of several influences, including blues, soul, and a splash of modern-day indie rock. Judging by the sales of Sound & Color (which have already surpassed Boys and Girls), I don't think they're having any trouble maintaining interest.

My opinion of HAIM is based on their awful set at Boston Calling in May (though I seemed to be the only one that hated it, so perhaps I need to go to the doctor to inspect my hearing for feces). You make good points regarding their increase in popularity, but I don't think being part of Taylor Swift's rotating social media BFF's says much for longevity. Them pulling a cash grab tour this season without a second album doesn't bode well, because there is such a thing as overexposure/abundance in the live scene (and especially the festival market).
With Alabama Shakes I'm just not sure where they could go with their sound (similar to The National who seem to have plateaud). I should revisit their albums to pick up on those indie rock influences that you mention. Wouldn't mind being wrong though.

Ok? What about all the festivals they've headlined outside of Tennessee?

I can totally see Haim headlining unless their new album is a bunch of experimental space jazz. When their next album comes out they're gonna be absolutely massive.
We'll find out more after their new album drops but glass animals are going to rise quickly. Their show at roo was still probably the most densely packed one I've ever been too. I think they could have a similar trajectory as alt j.
I like that pick. Very diverse, creative sound, and broad ranging, almost cultish fan base. I think it'll take 2 albums/5 years to get them to HL.
I'll throw a way down the bottom for now band, but Hinds could follow the path of Haim, alliteration unintended, of rockin female group, especially with international success. I didn't realize at South by Southwest they played 16 concerts in just 4 days.
I...would be ambivalent about Hinds being up there. When they came to Columbia (with Glass Animals, natch) it seemed like their sound was rather schizophrenic. Just when one groove was really going, they'd switch, which annoyed me.
Granted, I loved the music itself, but I didn't like them live.
Anyway.
Arctic Monkeys VW 21 Pilots (who I liked when they played Lolla last year) Lorde Sam Smith Tame Impala Chance Alabama Shakes
I don't think that CHVRCHES or Walk the Moon will get quite that high up.

KOL has headlined all over the world despite the lack of stage charisma. If the music is accessible enough and played well in a live setting, it doesn't matter.
they wont be until they can put on a stellar festival performance. ive seen them 3 times, twice at a fest and once in concert, both fest shows have been very lackluster but the concert was awesome.
