Lee Kerslake. Magician’s Birthday. Demons and Wizards. Blizzard of Ozz. I saw him in 1982 at the Hammond Social Club with Heep (which was him and Mick Box) plus a band. Fucking drummer to a lot of rocked out tripping nights.
Never got into Uriah but Mr. Crowley is perfect layer by layer.
They were pretty honest in lots of ways like Deep Purple. Magicians Birthday is close to desert island for me and came in the clutch to save sanity more than once. The album cover shifts because of the color contrast. Roger Dean. But the music speaks for itself. Most of the OG albums are pretty great (Look at Yourself, Demons and Wizards, Sweet Freedom and Wonder World). Lots of great musicians have been involved, but Mick Box is the shit.
Yeah. An early hero of mine. My next door neighbor got me into VH early in high school. 1, 2, Women and Children First and Fair Warning are the ones I liked the best. To me, they were the party hard rock band who didn’t dwell on dark and morose themes opting for fun and stupidity until they became a caricature. Sad I never saw them live. Eddie was influenced by one of the greatest rock and jazz guitarists of all times, Allan Holdsworth. Allan died a couple years ago as well. Maybe they are working on some harmonics and fretboard work in the afterlife.
RIP Joe Morgan. Great second basemen who came up with the Astros and became a superstar (one of many) for the Big Red Machine In the 70s. Once stole home and thought teammate Tony Perez who was batting would be thrilled for him. Instead he reamed his ass because “I get paid to drive in runs”. Those of us who are old enough and grew up playing baseball remember Morgan’s batting stance and you would see kids imitating his elbow jerk before the pitch came. I was gonna post this in the MLB thread but thought it might spoil the hatred (deserved?) being hurled at the Astros franchise right now.
RIP. I knew him best as the announcer who hated sabermetrics/analytics, which actually were very favorable towards him. Deadspin used to make a lot of hay out of that.
Also Gordon Haskill, singer on most of King Crimson's Lizard album (was unable to sing Prince Rupert Awakes, so they brought in Jon Anderson for that one).
Add Spencer Davis to the list of musician obituaries. Biggest hit was Gimme Some Lovin’ which got a nice resurgence from The Big Chill soundtrack to a new group of younger fans. I did not know that a very young Steve Winwood was organist for Spencer Davis Band before leaving in 1967 to form Traffic.
