1 and 2 make up for it for me. Easily. Just can't jack up the undercard like they did this year. That's the real concern.
I agreed IF they would put Future and Calvin on the same day. Though, it'd be weird to have Roger Waters close out the event because he would be every be everyone's most anticipated act.

Yes, I'd be OK with one exciting headliner, one mildly interesting headliner, and one boring headliner if we can also get an interesting and well-curated undercard. But I think to sell tickets and get people talking, Roo does need one interesting and unique headliner for 2017. Beyonce, Jay, etc.

Roger Waters would be a pretty unique headliner. He's only ever played two US fests and hasn't toured a solo show that wasn't The Wall in a decade. Beyoncé is touring most of this summer/fall. But I would probably consider them equal in terms of the power of their booking. Jay is the best hip hop headliner they could book but not on the level of those two

This was the first year since 09 that I was legitimately excited for all 3 headliners, and I think they are some of the strongest this year. Normally i expect one to excite me, one to enjoy from a distance, and one to drink beer through while the undercard carries the weight. Its the undercard next year that scares me, not prospective headliners.

I feel the same way. It seems like the undercards of most large festivals have been getting progressively worse since 2013. ACL and Bonnaroo arguably put together the worst undercards in their history this year. The 2012-2013 undercards were great across the board, the 2014/2015 undercards were mixed (Bonnaroo probably had the best undercard in 2014), and the 2016 undercards have been mostly underwhelming.

what happened to arctic monkeys? i know alex turner has been touring with TLSP but what are the chances of them hitting the festival circuit again next year like they did in 2014.

He recently said that they have no immediate plans for the next album, but it wouldn't surprise me if they head back into the studio toward the end of the year. I'd be shocked if they don't resume touring by the second half of 2017. They've never taken this much of a break between albums and tours.
Roger Waters - Arcade Fire - Calvin Harris - Future
Only problem is I don't see any of these acts closing out Sunday. It seems they've gone the way of putting a fairly chill headliner on Sunday to put everyone to sleep before sending them on their merry way.

I'd think Roger Waters - Arcade Fire - Phish isn't unreasonable as long as there's something on the pop/EDM/hip-hop end of the spectrum in the 4-6 range. But then you start running into the same problem as this year with headliners that don't mesh with the names beneath them.

I think the problem with this top 3 is that none of those names are big draws for the younger demographic/first-time festival goers. Roger Waters would be a terrific coup based on how rare he is, but he doesn't have quite the same mass appeal as someone like Paul McCartney or Elton John. And while Arcade Fire is a great band, they're not exactly going to move a lot of tickets like other current acts such as Kanye or Mumford & Sons. I imagine these headliners would be fine with most vets, but the vets are comprising a progressively smaller percentage of festival-goers each year.
Unless Roo is going to go back to being a primarily one-dimensional fest, they need to have "something for everyone". But not the way they curated the lineup this year. You can't have headliners that don't appeal to the youngins and undercards that don't appeal to the vets. That's a good way to turn off both groups.
Future was #9 on Okeechobee's lineup....he's not going to be third or fourth at Bonnaroo. He's a "turn up" rapper that people party to and nothing more. He's pretty much at his peak right now.

Roger Waters The Wall is the third highest grossing tour of all time. The second highest grossing tour of this decade... I am pretty sure he'd move some tickets.
I think Roger Waters would be the strongest old white guy headliner since Macca. Throw in some teeny boper garbage, an indie act like Arcade Fire, and a B- undercard, then Bonnaroo is back and selling 90,000 tickets again.
Dude, Roger Waters would sell a LOT of tickets across all demographics. Neo-hippies can dig Elton John. Neo-hippies LOVE Pink Floyd.
Roger Waters is a big deal, but I guarantee you he has less name recognition among young people than Paul McCartney or Elton John. I'm not suggesting that young people don't like Pink Floyd, but I wouldn't be surprised if quite a few couldn't name the individual band members.

Obviously Paul McCartney was Bonnaroo's biggest and best booking ever. I can't think of another name that would come closer to that splash than Roger Waters.

I guess it would depend on whether you prefer a setlist of primarily Pink Floyd songs, or about 50% Pink Floyd material/50% solo Gilmour material. Gilmour is also much more elusive than Waters.
