bf and i watched The Witch last night - first time for him, second for me but it had been years. that film does Atmospherically Creepy so goddamn well.
i'm just an episode and a half into Usher but loving it so far!
Love how Eggers' movies portray indoctrination and the realities it creates for the believers.
One thing I like about the VVitch is, there IS a witch! And these people believe in witches. They're better equipped to deal with a witch than non-believers like us. But their internalized misogyny and the father's pride still leads them to tear themselves apart, and Thomassin's path becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. Also a study of how we might have no choice but to become what others make of us.
ditto to all this. The first time I watched it, I wasn’t sure the ending was what I wanted. On second watch, I realized it was THE only ending that truly made sense. Because of that last thing you said

Bleary-Eyed Bonnawook Recap King & Upcoming Shows MVP
#11. M3GAN (2023) - Way more enjoyable as a very, very dark comedy than anything else, less for that dance that takes up about 10 seconds of the runtime and more for its insane use of music cues and M3GAN's often over the top dialogue and physicality, to say nothing about the casting choices of Ronny Chieng and Brian Jordan Alvarez. Speaking of casting, both child actors are pretty great here, with Violet McGraw hitting the right beats as a grieving child without ever laying it on too thick. Surprised I had to go through 5 pages of letterboxd comments before finding one that mentions Black Mirror. (and weirdly, after some googling I've only seen one review specifically mentioning any similarities to "Arkangel"! people get too caught up in making the trite "what if phones but too much" criticism of Black Mirror even though there's a lot more interesting, thoughtful criticism that could be done!)

The Fall of the House of Usher. Finished the series last night. Overall really enjoyed it, even if a little rough around the edges. I'd probably rank it right in the middle of Flanagan's netflix series.
It had a few big problems, the biggest of which being that it sticks too much to its structure. Showing us every episode which of Roderick's kids were going to die from the ghost visits in the present. So by the time we are three or four episodes in there is little surprise left in the story and we are just waiting around to see what fucked up way these people die, none of which are as fun or gnarly as the first death in the club scene with the acid sprinklers.
The other problem is that the more interesting characters were killed off too early. Found Perry, Camille, and Leo far more fun to watch than Tamerlane or Frederick.
Lots of good stuff too. Performances were on point particularly Carla Gugino, Mark Hamill, and Willa Fitzgerald. and while the show was stacked with monologues as is customary of Mike Flanagan, they were easier to digest this time around, probably because of how corny a lot of them were.

#12. Hellraiser: Hellworld (2005): Saw this the way it was intended: on early afternoon cable TV, inadvertently.
#13. Wolf's Hole (1987): A very weird but very good by Daisies director Věra Chytilová. Its premise (11 teenagers are selected for a skiing retreat by some mysterious adults) naturally lends itself to some Lord of the Flies-style plotting and general movie-teen nastiness, but but just when you think you know where it's going it becomes heavily allegorical*. It's often shot very unsettlingly, with lots of zooms in and out, with frequent jarring closeups, often interspersed with sudden handheld camera shots. All that action makes some moments particularly uneasy in a way I would have never expected, including one shot where a character looks directly into the camera in a close up and says something disturbing; it happens only once in the entire movie and as such freaked me out way more than I was expecting. Good stuff.
*: Most sources reference the film as being a story about the "normalization" period of communism in Czechoslovakia. I tried reading a bit more into that history and came away feeling like I needed to read more to understand it lol. I feel like this next bit might be a spoiler, it might not be, read at your own risk if you haven't seen this:
However, beyond being about a specific period of history in a specific place, it's also a pretty good parable about repressed people under any circumstances coming together under extreme circumstances, so don't feel like you have to be well versed in USSR history to get it. After seeing it, it's kind of amazing Věra Chytilová got this made and into the world at all.

#14. A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984): Never seen this one before either. It's got perhaps one too many story fakeouts, some pretty hilarious special effects, and a phone with a dessicated tongue making out with the main character. And yet, it's pretty great!
a note: the Friday the 13th movie where Jason goes to space is the 10th one?? best believe I am not suffering through another 8 sequels before watching that.

visited a friend who had a Peacock subscription last night.
#15. They/Them (2022): Like most others, I thought this was bad. Unlike most others, though, I didn’t find it offensively bad. Most of its problems stem from the fact that a guy in his 60s is attempting to write realistic LGBT teens of various stripes and subsequently gives them some pretty bad dialogue. (oh and also this guy in his 60s also wrote The Aviator. lol.) Add in some muddled characterizations and its shockingly bloodless slasher elements and it doesn’t quite add up. There is some pretty upsetting psychological torture in the middle that indicate this concept could’ve been good. But instead we get a group singalong to P!nk’s “Fuckin’ Perfect”. Oh well.
#16. Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey (2023): I think a lot of people also found this offensively bad, but for much different reasons. I think people find the idea of immediately placing a beloved children’s character in a horror scenario creatively bankrupt and that there’s other better ways to use public domain characters. But the alternatives wouldn’t be good either: a Winnie the Pooh courtroom drama? A Winnie the Pooh buddy cop comedy? A Winnie the Pooh romantic drama where he realizes his latent romantic feelings for his annoying neighbor Piglet? ok actually some people probably do want that last one, but that would also be horrible.
Anyway, I assumed this movie would be pretty meta and gesture towards its absurdity. Weirdly, it does not! It goes full steam ahead on gross-out gore that tries to weave together the stories of Pooh having a deathwish out for Christopher Robin and also a woman trying to recover from the trauma of being stalked (yes!! There is an honest to god trauma narrative in *this* movie!!!). Also, it is shot horribly and features one of the worst prosthetics you’ll ever see. It’s unclear who liked this enough to warrant a sequel, but that’s showbiz baby!

Demon Cop (1990)- With no exaggeration this is one of the most confusing fucking movies I've ever watched. I can't even explain the thing but it seems the director is trying to comment on ever social issue of the Reagan era but with a demon probation officer that looks like a werewolf. Long voiceover monologues over still shots of people's backs. Flashbacks into flashbacks. Commodore64 effects. No cohesive narrative. A monster costume that they only rented for a few days and you can tell by the way they spliced scenes together. Like spliced a daytime exterior wide shoot with a close-up night interior of the demon cop. Awesome. Not worth watching unless you really like shit.
Shock Waves (1977) - Maybe the original Nazi zombies? I remember the cover of this at the video store. Never rented it. Has a nice sense of dread going for it. Not much else except for Peter Cushing as a Nazi on an deserted island.
Giallo in Venice (1979)- Awful. Erased it off my server. This movie was made in a time when porn simply wasn't as accessible. Sex scenes are like 10 minutes long and have a hilarious score. This dude can't get it up and his wife takes care of herself to a full orchestra that rises into a triumphant horn section just going off for her. They should show this to the UN if Italian men are ever put on trial for their treatment of women. Because this movie makes it seem like they really need to be.
Totally Killer (2023)- Wasn't feeling the humor in this at first but it gets better as the movie goes. It does have a weird vibe. Like a Disney Channel show with violence and adult language. Cast is fantastic for what the director is going for and once it gets in a groove they are knocking out some clever dialogue and having a blast. Overall an enjoyable time.
Candyman (2021)- This was much better than I figured it would be. Loved how the murder scenes were shot. Unique and forced you to use your imagination. The script needed some real work. Needlessly repetitive and a little on the nose. Ending was pretty dope.

Murders in the Zoo (1933): Reading about this move in advance, everyone mentions how violent it is for an early 30s movie, which is true, but what everybody fails to mention is that for the first half this movie feels like it's being set up as a screwball comedy. Somehow it works, but the tonal shift is super jarring. Still, pretty good for an hourlong movie.

The Black Cat is good. Worth watching just to get to see Lugosi and Karloff playing off each other. Karloff is credited simply as "Karloff". Read that it's based on a Poe story but I think very loosely.

#18. Encounters of the Spooky Kind (1980): I completely forgot about Criterion’s “Hopping Vampires of Hong Kong” series, which is, sadly, not as robust as I thought it was. This one was all right; it’s more of a comedy with some horror elements (especially in its opening scene). There’s a lot of slapstick, a lot of frenetic physicality, goofy special effects. The fight choreography is pretty great too. You can see Sammo Hung’s influence on Stephen Chow all throughout this movie. Unfortunately, it’s often bogged down by its way too convoluted plot. Fortunately, the end makes up for it with a great climactic final fight scene where the characters speak to each other in animal noises.

#19. Jason X (2001): ok guys bad news I liked this. This movie is mesmerizingly stupid, knows it, and somehow manages to pull it off. There's some meta jokes, especially towards the end, but they're few and far between enough to avoid making the whole thing too cute. There's some delightfully insane kills, but those delightfully insane kills are necessitated by how ridiculous the premise is. The acting is bad, a lot of the CGI is bad, it has that post-Matrix look of what everyone thought the future would look like, but there's also a crazy ass kinky sex scene in it and David Cronenberg gets murked at the beginning. The perfect dumb movie to have on in the background of a Halloween party.

Watched Terrifier 1 and 2 this weekend. As far as schlockey grindhouse slashers go these were great gross fun. Especially the 2nd one. And with the Halloween setting they make for great revisits every year.
I actually gasped out loud at one point and had to rewind.
When Evil Lurks is how I saw it translated.
But yes. This is the best horror film of the year. Definitely has that 70s vibe of grim hopeless horror that sticks in your mind for days. Just brutal stuff. Couldn’t take my eyes off it.

Excited about the It Follows and Black Phone sequel news.
Not entirely sure what Black Phone would be as a sequel seemed unlikely and a prequel seemed unnecessary but I loved that whole world and story so I'm interested in what they come up with.
