I listen to the Watch and the Big Picture, which is pretty much my exposure to the Ringer. The Big Picture can be very gatekeepy at times. The Watch seems much chiller. Can't stand any of their other stuff.

I always take a chance to shoehorn Hollywood Handbook into any podcast-related discussions, so worth pointing out they had some good digs at the Rewatchables during the Alan Yang episode from this week
For those who don't know, director Lynn Shelton died suddenly this past weekend. In addition to her own movies she directed numerous episodes of television of shows we all love: Glow, A.P. Bio, Love, Fresh Off The Boat, Casual, Santa Clarita Diet, The Good Place, Master of None, New Girl, etc. She had also somewhat recently started dating Marc Maron. Not exactly sure of the timeline but they've maybe been together a year, I could not have the facts right.
As per WTF Pod tradition, Marc put up his interview with Lynn Shelton from 2015. The pod was released today, and in the eight minute intro Marc is raw and dumps his soul out. It is heart-wrenching to listen to, a rare look at a public person very publicly grieving the loss of someone he loved. Difficult but recommended listening.
If you have somebody in your life you love make sure to tell them that today.

"I was just getting used to love"
FUCK
why did I listen to that
I didn’t want to. But that kind of love deserves to be heard, appreciated, acknowledged, and cherished.

Why do you find the Big Picture gatekeepy? I find it to be pretty accessible.
since i hate it when there is an inside joke i don't understand, every now and again I pop on an episode of Hollywood Handbook. I listened to the whole first year and since then have been hopping around to a few others.
i certainly got a few laughs in the first year, but still a lot of it felt obtuse to me. the first episode i really enjoyed was in 2014 when they were renegotiating their contract with Scott Aukerman. I feel like this is the first time when the veneer kind of gets chipped away from HH because Scott's character is basically coming from a place wherein Hollywood Handbook is bullshit and not a good show. Scott and Hayes kind of responding to this while trying to maintain their arrogance was pretty fucking funny.
Last night I was listening to a PFT episode from Jan 2015 and it's also super funny. Apparently Sean and Hayes put an ad on CBB for HH and so they are trying to make HH comfortable for CBB fans, so PFT spends a long time trying to explain some "Riddle Me This" CBB game to Sean and Hayes and that is great. then they spill something and Aimee Mann comes into the studio and Sean or Hayes thinks she is the cleaning lady.
i'm starting to wrap my ahead around HH finally. i think i'm going to continue to move through incrementally but not every single episode, listening to episodes with people i like who I know are great improvisers (like PFT) or other comedians I like to see how they respond to Sean & Hayes.
I don't know if I'll ever be a super fan like y'all are but i'm beginning to appreciate it.

Listen to every episode. It's worth it. Some of the dumbest, funniest callback things are on random episodes and each time I didn't know who the guest was and thought it would be a downer/boring episode I ended up liking them and looking into them more.
There's stuff with Parking Lot Scott. There's live episodes that are amazing. Sometimes a guest will show up unannounced so if you skip some episodes may be missing some things.
Really, the good stuff is when they get real and they talk about how embarassing it is for them to listen back to the show and hear how utterly pleased they are with their dumb jokes or quick timing and how they hate being told "Hey I love your podcast" now because they each do like 3 or 4 and they hate it lol
It's such a good show. I just re-listened to all the Pro versions. They're only 30 minutes which makes it easier.

The Pro version about The Irishman is some of the lowest-effort comedy I've ever heard and it still just kills me every time I listen to it

ok i will listen to them all. it will take me a while. i swear you HH fans are as bad as phish fans.
Q: hey i'd like to get into phish what album should i start with?
A: LISTEN TO ALL SHOWS FROM 1993-1998
to prove your point this past weekend i listened to the Grace Helbig episode from 2014. i did not know who she was so i probably would have skipped it but it was a hilarious episode, mostly it was her trying to teach Sean and Hayes how to access youtube on computer. they kept wanting to put "juice" on computer which was just some water they were drinking. when they played Grace one of their favorite youtube videos it was just the movie "The Color Purple".

if you're like me and have been wanting bill cravy's beef diaper merch, big grande is selling some teacher's lounge shirts for charity. www.bonfire.com/store/big-grande/

Yeah, that's exactly what i'm talking about. I've had a number of people I see and don't recognize the name so think "eh...probably won't be that great" and then some of my favorites come from those. Or there are times I think I don't recognize the name and then after listening a bit and looking them up I realize I know them from some shows.
Either way, their inability to use a computer is a great running gag. Sean always needs to use "his cousin" Sam's laptop to do any internet stuff.

Yeah, you can kind of tell at times on the audio with restrained laughter and snickering and it's easy to tell when someone is smiling while talking but the videos showing just how much they bust each other up adds another level.

I'm losing my shit right now listening to Tawny butcher Sean and Hayes's cartoon ideas to her father. Hayes being so upset saying "Noooo...You fucked it up!" is so great.
What are some good podcasts with black voices on the subjects at-hand? I'm realizing that while a handful of the pods that I listen to have Black hosts (though it's, admittedly, not many), they are generally not the dominant voices or the podcasts they host don't necessarily cover political topics.
Also, did anyone listen to the Simmons ep with Russillo? I haven't, because I really really dislike Russillo, and I heard he really showed his ass on this one, maybe as I'd expect, maybe even moreso. Was anticipating Simmons having a Black person or two or three on to discuss this, but instead I guess it's fucking Russillo complaining about looters and taxes or some shit. I guess I should just turn on my back on that show altogether, like I suppose I have with Rogan as well.
