How often do the clues refer to an artist's album and not the name? Asking for real, not smart assy
All I can think of up the top of my head was last year's clue for Washed Out. It was a picture of Portland, OR because they do the theme music for the show Portlandia. So if they would stretch that far I can't see why they wouldn't do an album.
How often do the clues refer to an artist's album and not the name? Asking for real, not smart assy
They've referred to all kinds of things. A few years ago, the clue for John Prine was "Buddy, when excited" or something similar, which referred to Prine's record label Oh Boy Records. Besides, with Sturgill Simpson, you have both. The radio clue refers to his name and the photo refers to his album, assuming it's him.

No, it's a good question. We can take a good bit from how they've worked in the past. It's also important to remember not all clues are created equal. Some are much more clever and layered then others.
Album clues might not be the norm but they certainly happen. Some have been pretty strait forward but some can take a more round about way. Like the Pearl Jam clue(2008- Joplin's preserves) was about Janis Joplin's nickname. Not everyone would know that. However, most music fans know she had an album called Pearl. As to your question, it seems most clues that hint towards an album name, work in the artist name as well. I'll try to give you examples of both when they stick out to me.
This isn't a complete list from these years because we didn't fully solve them and/or never got confirmation. I'm sure if we looked through them we might find a few more.
2011: - Opeth had an album title(Watershed) in the clue. It also had a hint to the band name, if one knew it's origins. - The Wavves clue was referring mostly to the album King of the Beach. - Deertick's clue referenced the album name/cover art of War Elephant. Also hinted to a slang word for tick. - Beirut's album title and cover art referenced in the clue. - The Drums' album Summertime was arguable referred to(Sun shines on these former nannies). The main hint was about percussion
2012: - Battles' album Gloss Drop was hinted at, depending on what you think that crap on the cover is. Also, flavored lip gloss. meh. - Tune-Yards album Bird-Brains was half the clue, the other half being her ukelele.
2013: - Animal Collective's Merriweather Post Pavilion hinted at with the beach and crab part of the clue. - Japandroids: One can argue that "Human contact gone" refers to the album Post-Nothing. - A$AP Rocky's EP Pesos was part of the clue. - Reference to Foals' first album being rejected was part of the clue.
2014: - Chvrches album cover was vaguely referenced. - Neutral Milk Hotel's original record label was hinted at in the picture. - Janelle Monae's first EP was hinted at in the picture.

Thanks for the reply... I remember the chvrches had the 2 Vs in the clue and neutral milk worked their initials into the clue also...

Revisiting this clue, I wonder if the lunchbox's placement relative to the mountain is more important than the lunchbox itself. The lunchbox image is placed above (or on top of) the mountain image, which could be a direct reference to Sturgill Simpson's "High Top Mountain". Not sure if this is relevant, but it's worth mentioning that Sturgill Simpson currently resides in Nashville.
Maybe it means that the artist is ascending to playing at Roo.....like Bonnaroo is the top of the mountain.....has Sturgill (or any other of the guesses) never played Roo before?

I read a couple of his interviews last night, and this morning I've been looking into the history of the lunchbox. Because I'm clearly NOT obsessive at all. Many members here can personality vouch for that.
I think you are on the right track. We might be looking to hard to relate it to Bonnaroo. Is there a connection between mountains and lunch boxes? Why yes there is...
This is one article but there are several others on the lunchboxes symbolism of American workers..
Lunchboxes are historically tied to the working class because of their roots during the industrial revolution. People needed a safe place to store their food while they worked away at their, often, nasty jobs. This is especially true of coal miners. The blue collar roots are so strong that their is a political term, lunch pail democrat, associated with it. What genre of music do people typically associate with the working class? Country.
So maybe something along these lines is what we should be taking from that part of the clue?
Sturgill Simpson is from a coal mining town in Kentucky. His mother's side of the family were coal miners. There is also a song on High Top Mountain called King Coal. AND if you really want to take it out on a limb. That song has lyrics about mountain top removal protesters coming into small towns. What company is generally being protested in that area? Arch Coal. hahaha
Popsgryphonkin You guys started this. What do you think?

Just for completeness's sake, someone on the inforoo facebook brought up that Moon Taxi's latest album had Buck Mountain on the cover. They have played before, so the lunch box could just signify them as a returning artist. Not sure how the radio clue would apply to them though.

Just brainstorming out loud here:
Clue #1 = Picture of a mountain --> Mountains Clue #2 = Picture of a Roo lunchbox --> ??? Clue #3 = "Welcome to Springfield" --> Springfield is a city --> Cities
It wasn't harassment. He wanted it. He was a willing participant until he became vindictive towards our poor, sweet Druid. Just look at her. Does she look like a harasser? I don't think so.

I just had a thought about the clues 2 and 3 a lot of people want to use the Snapchat for tie-ins to the clues. However, I think since this is the first year Bonnaroo is doing Snapchat, that they are just playing around and the Lunchbox and the little drummer boy song in the background really have nothing to do with the clues. I think they are just trying to be 'cute' on Snapchat...anyone else with me on this? I say this because the first clue, yesterday, and today's clue does not have music or additional photos. I think they realized it was complicating things and stopped.
edit: well the first clue did have music but it was only Jeopardy music
“Music has always been a matter of Energy to me, a question of Fuel. Sentimental people call it Inspiration, but what they really mean is Fuel. I have always needed Fuel. I am a serious consumer. On some nights I still believe that a car with the gas needle on empty can run about fifty more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio.” - Hunter Thompson

Not sure where "Beaches" fits in.
more importantly that is the exact same mountain in the clue, just upside down...I think this may be the winner based on this... the Welcome to Springfield I think is referencing the skyline of the city there..and Springfield is a city in every state....for the lunchbox thing, see my theory above.

Ugg. Buck Mountain being the same was said when this was first brought up.
Your theory above said that the lunchbox didn't mean anything. Now half of this post pertains to it. Which one is?
Not that Moon Taxi isn't the right answer. I'm just trying to figure out what in the world you are talking about.
First album was called High Top Mountain, his last name obviously fits the radio clue. Not sure how the Bonnaroo lunchbox fits in though.
The Picture : High Top Mountain
Welcome to Springfield: His last name.
Fucking lunchbox: ?????
Well, a stretch would be that his music seems to described as a throwback to the sixties, seventies and early eighties when that style of lunchbox was popular. Last year nostalgia via metal lunchboxes; this year via the Outlaw Country genre. Old made new.
More esoteric and less likely, we all know the lunch boxes from last year were a ploy to get all the wooks to hide their stiki-budz in a spot easy to find for the tollbooth searchers. Sturgill Simpson's father was an undercover narc at one point in his career.

Are you sure that's a skyline of a city called Springfield or are you just saying they chose Springfield as a generic reference to a city? Because I highly doubt it's the latter.

I didn't read back about Buck Mountain, my bad there. But it is interesting that they have the same exact mountain on their latest record.
My Lunchbox theory means that the lunchbox is irrelevant either way..I think that Bonnaroo powers that be were just trying to be cute and put that picture on Snapchat for no reason at all and once they see on the interwebs that it is causing more problems for us all to solve it, they have stopped adding the extras...I only think and say that because with this clue and clue #3 it is making us all over think the clue and they realized that so they stopped with the 'extras'. Even if it is Moontaxi, it doesn't matter if the band played at Bonnaroo or not...the lunchbox possibly was always just irrelevant to the clue.

I am saying the latter...the only other Springfield tie-in that I could see is that they debut a song of their latest album on Conan earlier this year and Conan used to write for the Simpsons, I think that is a bigger stretch than the generic city idea I have.

OK, I got that originally. Your massive ellipses run had my dyslexic brain all confused. My bad. To me, we can't totally rule out those extra clues until we are 100% sure they are irrelevant. That doesn't mean I'm taking a hardline on them having to fit but I'd like confirmation. One reason is how insanely difficult the clues once were. Every little bit seemed to matter and it took days to figure each one out. Most have these have been so easy in comparison. Still, I look at the clues with that in mine even if I really shouldn't anymore.
I do agree that the album having the same picture is one hell of a good lead. I'm surprised it took so long for someone to figure it out.

The generic city isn't a bad idea but most Springfield are very small towns. FYI, there isn't one in every state but some states have more then one township called Springfield. Anyway, I just don't see the clue makers purposefully trying to tie that idea together. It just doesn't fit in my mind but it wouldn't be the first time I was wrong.

Exactly it is a pretty big lead, if it means anything. I am also not taking a hard line that the 'extra' clues don't mean anything. Looking at it both ways is a good idea. The other guesses on this clue are really good too, and this clue is a lot better than the clue #3...I give up on that entirely...lol

I see what you're saying. I actually royally suck at these clues, but I try. Side note: part of me is wanting it to be Moon Taxi, because I like them.

Looks good to me. But I suck at clues. I only get to Sturgill because I'm working on my best Americana albums of 2014 article now and he's on it. Whether this one ends up being Sturgill or Moon Taxi, they both make a lot of sense for Bonnaroo this year (Sturgill as either the Situation tent anchor or in the Isbell early Which slot) and Moon Taxi as the Thursday band coming back for the main lineup. I wouldn't be surprised to see them both there, clue or not.
