I guess Shabaka Hutchings's hiatus is really over. His first solo record is coming out 4/12. He did most of it at RVG studio which is a great place for him to record. Not sure who the final players on all the tracks are but he mentions Andre 3K, Moses Sumney, Esperanza Spalding, Floating Points, Laraaji and Lianne La Havas among a bunch of others in his notes on it. First track is out and it's real nice - but you have to look under just Shabaka not Shabaka Hutchings.

The more I read about the hiatus, I realized it was from the saxophone and not in general. He got announced for Big Ears and I was really confused. Apparently this is a flute record and I’m really curious how that’s gonna sound. If it’s like this single, it’s gonna be really really good.

Right. He says it's too stressful to be "on" with the saxophone on tours and he was touring with like three different high level bands for a while there so I get it. And agree re: the single. I'll be fully ready on 4/12.
3 Shades of Blue: Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Bill Evans, and the Lost Empire of Cool by James Kaplan is the hot jazz read of 2024. Pops highly recommends.
I recently discovered Dark Magus. Anyone got recommendations to similar sounding stuff?
Keep running with Miles. I’d suggest the other live ones; “Agharta” and “Pangea” as well as “Get Up With It”. Past that, Donald Byrd “Ethiopian Knights” and “Places and Spaces”. Probably my favorite is Archie Sheppard “Attica Blues” and Herbie’s 70’s run.
