It would have been It’s Almost Dry if Pusha let Pharrell do the full album.
if you cut Scrape It Off, Hear Me Clearly, and the Kanye features it'd be a way stronger album overall, just a little too much fat for me to have enjoyed as much as Daytona
top for me this year:
Boldy James/Nicholas Craven - Fair Exchange No Robbery Boldy James/Real Bad Man - Killing Nothing Westside Gunn - 10 billy woods - Aethiopes Wiki/Subjxct 5 - Cold Cuts
Was hoping I'd connect more with the Freddie Gibbs, Vince Staples, and Denzel Curry albums from this year but c'est la vie
It’s Almost Dry Melt My Eyez Mr Morale The Forever Story 2000
hm: Traumazine, SSS
this year felt a little meh for hip hop even with the Kendrick drop. hoping we get some new Danny Brown next year
I disagree. I don’t think the highs were extremely high, but I think there are more than 10 8/10s which is crazy. There was a time recently where I’d get less than 5 albums I thought were worthwhile per year.

fair enough, maybe i just need to do some more digging haha
i gotta listen to the new Nas record, thats gotten a lot of buzz around here
Nas is really back. I hadn’t listened to any of these recent albums. Started on Kings Disease III and I’m still surprised by how good it is, even after hearing other people say it.
Just listened to all of them. I think they got better with each one but Magic might be the best of them.
I've only listened to KD1 once, but I think it's my least favorite. Will listen again soon. The other 3 are so damn hard for me to rank.
KD2 has some of my very favorite tracks from all 4 albums on it. I absolutely adore Rare, Store Run and Moments. Like those are three I've been listening to on repeat more than anything on KD3. But KD2 is one of those albums where I wish I could have made the sequencing decisions and cut a few tracks. If it was arranged as well as KD3, I think it would have been the best. Additionally, his rapping was a hair less prime form on this one compared to Magic and KD3.
Magic was the first of the series where I felt like the rapping was in prime form. Just skating over every beat. Magic is certainly the most approachable and easy-listening project of the 4, but it also feels like it accomplishes less than KD2 and KD3. I actually do wish it was 3 songs longer or that it covered a wider variety of topics.
KD3 is probably the best mostly because of the absolute perfection through 6 tracks. Just love how killer it starts. I do think there are some meh tracks and the highs are quite as high as KD2. Not a huge fan of Recession Proof, Serious Interlude, WTF SMH is ok, Beef and Don't shoot. None of them bad songs really, but there is major room for improvement, and I find myself trailing off a bit.
I'd basically put all three of these around the 8.25/10 range maybe even a little better. I think you could make an argument for any of them being Nas' 3rd best album, but probably more likely they'd start to slot in at 4th in his discography.
My favorite songs form the three:
1. Moments from KD2 (I was listening to this song on repeat the morning before I proposed to my GF a month ago and it just felt so good. So some bias there) 2. Speechless from Magic 3. Michael and Quincy from KD3 4. Store Run from KD2 5. Rare from KD2 6. Thun from KD3 7. Legit from KD3 8. Meet Joe Black from Magic 9. Nas is Good from KD2 10. Hollywood Gangster from Magic

I’m starting to think Nas had been way overrated before this run. I mean we all know how great he was on the first 2 albums, but some even question It Was Written. Everyone thinks I Am and Nsstradamus bombed. I personally quit listening after that. I might listen to every album once or twice when they came out. I think everyone holds Stillmatic up pretty high but after what I just watched (a podcast called Making Illmstic, where they pair every album down to 10 tracks to try to make another Illmstic). They just did Stillmatic and it made me really question my opinion of that album and maybe even Nas in general. Is he really as great as ee think he is? He notoriously picks terrible beats. He hss so many misses. So many different things he’s tried that just didn’t work at all. But he’s sounding like he’s back to Nasty Nas on this recent run. He’s back to just spitting. And finally he found someone that makes great beats for him. Why does everyone give him all these shitty bests? It’s insane.

Over the course of the last month, I've been going through every Nas album to kinda finalize my opinion on him. Then I think I'm going to do the same with Jay-Z. I'm probably going ot post a full ranking of his discog in here once that's done that nobody will read.
I had always had nas comfortably outside of my top 5 before this run. Maybe even top 10. He's still probably outside of my top 5 favorites, but his discography has wildly improved because of the last 2 years.
Illmatic is great. It Was Written is also a classic that should never be questioned. Stillmatic has some suspect songs on it imo. It's hard to compare Stillmatic to these new albums. Stillmatic has 4-5 songs that are more legendary than anything that has happened on any of these 4 albums. But when you get beyond 2nd Childhood and Destroy and Rebuild... the second half of that album gets really bleak really quick. Like I could end the album after that point every time and miss out on nothing. Sometimes I try to convince myself that the Tears For Fears sampled song is cool and not corny.
I hear you on the beats, but for me there is a bigger issue with Nas that nobody ever mentions. I think about it as "rap-along-ability." As a comparison point, when Biggie or Jay-Z or an Andre verse comes on, I have a gutteral reaction to scream along with the song. Sometimes it's due to charisma, or catchy lyrics or flow or voice or whatever. But I can't lie I just drone out during a ton of Nas verses. He doesn't grab me like many of the other all time greats do. And by the way, Nas isn't terrible in this category. I can recite a ton of Illmatic, a few songs from other albums, but he's certainly not all time great. I'm more likely to start rapping along to a Pusha T verse than a Nas verse. That means something, but it's hard to make it make sense here so I'm gonna keep labeling it as rapalongability. Nas isnt great at that.
But don't want to end on a negative note. I've been so into these 4 albums + going back to his older work. God's Son is a very strong album imo. Less classics than Stillmatic but more consistent overall and still has 2 top 15 nas songs on it. I still need to revisit Life is Good.
We need those music chat things back. We could listen to all of it together. I’ve listened to way more Nas than Jay in my life. I don’t even know why. So I definitely should listen to more Jay.

They shut down jqbx. Pour one out.
Are there any others still working? I can’t remember the names.
