The thing about Kanye (and other rappers) is it's questionable what he's actually written.
I kind of feel like hip hop artists and rappers should be two different things. Kanye, Drake, and Dr Dre would be considered the best hip hop artists of all time. But I don't think they belong on a best rapper list.
It's true that Kanye uses ghost writers, but he's certainly capable of writing lyrics of his own and he's very good at curating lines that other people give him and cultivating his personality and style. ("That's a good line but I would never say that" I think he would say during the MBDTF sessions). For example, if you look at the original Rhymefest lyrics to Jesus Walks, Kanye changed a majority of them and his version is clearly better, in my opinion. Also, who really knows who writes absolutely all of their own shit and never lets anyone suggest lyrics to them. It's probably less people than we think.
But like, there's more to rapping than just lyricism, too. Kanye is a rapper. Other people are rappers. I'd rather listen to Kanye's music, so to me he is one of the best rappers. People generally chalk that up to production elements or him being a better "musician" or whatever, but he also has people help him produce and uses other people's beats, so is he not a great producer? No one really makes that argument.
Having said all that, I appreciate him as a lyricist much more than a lot of people who have the conventional opinion that he's not that great of one.
I think he's an incredibly lame rapper. Always have.
I had 30 something off the top of my head then looked at some lists to fill it out.

Who has written for Kanye? I somehow completely missed that he uses ghostwriters
Well, in Hawaii they would sit in a big circle and collaborate on lyrics, so like Push and Nicki were there, probably RZA and Jay and all those people on that album, probably among others. He's had Rhymefest do stuff for him. I imagine a ton of people have contributed lyrics to him over the years, but he still can write.
I can see someone thinking most of those dudes are better than Kanye, but I don't. Main exception is El-P. You really think El-P is a better lyricist than Kanye? That's nuts to me.

I think El-P is a better lyricist than Kanye over the course of their careers. He was a weird one for you to pick on. Some of the late 80s rappers would have been a way easier case to make... or Snoop Dogg or Q-Tip. I mean El P is a better lyricist than Killer Mike.

El is 100% a better lyricist than Kanye if you look at his whole career, especially his 3 solo albums. If you're comparing just RTJ El to him, then maaayyybe, but even then I'd prob pick El.

What's your favorite El-P verse?
A Christmas Fucking Miracle, Dear Sirs, Squeegee Man Shooting last verse.
Full disclosure I really just thought of El-P as a producer prior to RTJ so I guess I don't really know anything about that!
Definitely do yourself a favor and give his solo records a listen. If you want the closest sound to RTJ, start with C4C and work backwards and if you want to see how he evolved up to that, go back to Fantastic Damage and move up from there.

I used to play some of his stuff on my college radio station but I just remember it being beats and stuff.
