Very interesting, looking forward to hearing what it sounds like.
"This currently unnamed supergroup has been formed with the likes of Mastodon's Troy Sanders, Soulfly's Max Cavalera, The Dillinger Escape Plan's Greg Puciato, and the ex-Mars Volta drummer Dave Elitch.... Ohhhhh yeeeeah."
Calling Dave Elitch the ex-Mars Volta drummer is a bit of a stretch though. He only filled in on the drums for a leg of a tour after Thomas Pridgen quit/got fired. When I read that name attached to TMV, I was definitely confused for a second. Had to google it to see he was the temp replacement after Pridgen.
People were raving about Sunbather a few months back, but I couldn't get past the vocals on that.
There's quite a bit of good metal and metal-leaning releases lately. Vattnet Viskar was my album of September pick. October had Pelican and Red Fang as honorable mentions somewhere behind Pusha T and Arcade Fire. For anyone interested in technical death metal, Man Must Die has a new one coming Tuesday - their last couple of releases were solid.

yeah just went back and read it, I agree with their points that it isn't really black metal, however, I really enjoyed the vocals. Despite them being incomprehensible, I felt like the singer was able to convey a ton of emotion through the screams, which I really enjoyed.
Watain is playing in Austin tonight, think I'm going to make the drive to it. Never seen Watain before, but I have a feeling it's the perfect pre-Halloween show!

If I could buy a version of this album sans vocals, I'd pay $100 for it, and that's no joke.
The vocals just sound like someone pitch-shifted the Tazmanian Devil. Or recycled a midi file of one of the demon players speaking in Mutant League Football.
If I hadn't looked up live performances from them, I would think that's actually plausible haha. But even though I can't understand anything the guy is trying to say, I don't think it made the album worse. I liked the album so much because I've honestly never heard anything like it. One wouldn't think using "black metal" vocals over My Bloody Valentine sounding instrumentals could work, but I felt it came together very, very well
Wow, that was an intense show to say the least. On my drive to Austin, the sky kept erupting with massive bursts of lightning and thunder. No real rain yet, you could just tell something was brewing. The Watain show was outside (Red 7 for those that know Austin), so whatever happened with the weather, would be happening to us. It didn't really rain during the opening acts, just ominous lightning cracks across the sky letting you know you should turn back.
Within a minute or two of Watain taking the stage, the sky opened up and didn't stop til this morning. The crowd at the start of Watain was pretty good size for the venue, maybe 300-500 people (I'm terrible at estimating that). However, by the time the show ended, there were probably only 50 of us still left outside due to the crazy weather. There were probably another 50 or so hanging around inside trying to stay out of the rain but still hear the show.
The show itself was great, Watain were on point. Liked their stage set up. It's kind of hard to see in the pictures, but the backdrop things on the stage are covered in bones of various animals and spattered in blood. No doubt they were real, when you were close to the stage you could smell the faint aroma of dried up flesh. The set was only about an hour long, but honestly, that's all I needed. It was such an intense hour, that it felt closer to two. Great setlist too, not just the new stuff (I prefer Sworn to the Dark and Lawless Darkness over the newest album right now). You can be sure I'll be seeing Watain next time they come around.
Here are a few pics I snapped. Sorry about the quality, I was just trying to get them quickly so I didn't fry my phone in the rain. The very last picture I tried to snap one of the ground after the show. It's hard to see in the pic, but that's an inch and a half of water sheeting across the floor at flash flood speeds. My drive home matched the intensity of the show.
Black metal on Halloween with apocalyptic storms overhead...the metal gods were shining on us last night.
Edit: Looks like some areas just south of Austin got over a foot of rain from this storm. It was crazy intense rain, haven't seen rain that heavy in a long time. I think 2 people died in the flash floods too.
I liked this pic, the guitarist looks like an Uruk-Hai to me in this one.
MDF lineup is out. $255 is too much for my blood but I'd really like to see At The Gates. The Soundstage has a decent lineup for $60.
MDF is certainly one of those fests that is on the permanent wishlist. It won't happen until I hit the lotto though because, like you said, it's just too much cost for benefit right now.
They do split it up by stages and you can purchase individualtickets for each. It would suck buying for the smaller knowing I'm missing ATG and Windhand playing on another.
That said, I may really do the $60 ticket. Cripple Bastards, Dropdead, and Antisect may prove to be too much for me.

I am sure @jeffp1717 would be posting this now if all his blood hadn't rushed to his boner.

I don't think I've ever been so into an album as much as I am in to Sunbather. Whenever I listen to it I just go into a trance and have to listen to the whole thing. It's a work of art
