I tried to Shazam it but it couldn't pick up what it was even on the vocal part. The vocals were the only reason I even knew what it was. It didn't sound like any Dead I ever heard.
was it kind of aggressive sounding? wondering if what you hard was The Other One. vocals start around 10 minutes in.
You're good. I was only able to listen to a little bit at work but I think that might be it.
We should make this a game. I thought it was a long shot anyone would know what it was because my description was pretty vague but I think you nailed it. The game would be like listen to a song by a specific band and see if a fan can guess the song.

that sounds like fun.
i was also able to use my knowledge of our similar musical interests, namely metal and weird heavy music, to hone in on the song. The Other One has kind of a frenetic hippie freak out feel that fans of Claypool etc. could vibe with.

Try Tool. Describe very vaguely a random part of a Tool song and see I can guess it.

this one thats like BAH BAH BAH BAH BAH BAH BAH BAH then gets quiet with just guitar or bass guitar or something.

So I'm listening to the version from Fillmore and I'm not sure this is the song. The bass was featured a lot more, it was weirder, spacier, jazzier, which where I was getting the Mars Volta vibes. But this song is pretty cool too. I'm pretty sure it's a differnt song because the one I heard last night had the same vocal pattern where it comes in at like 10 min. and then the vocals come back in later, except the song doesn't end there like it does on The Other One.

so someone who is more knowledgeable about the dead (snowmanomuraDelicious Meatball Sub) may have to answer this, but my understanding of "The Other One" is that it was originally part of a suite called "That's It For The Other One" that had four parts (original studio version on the album "Anthem of the Sun"). Over time the parts of the suite that were included in the live version changed. And i'm sure over time the nature of the "jammier" parts of the song would certainly have changed. So if you heard two different versions from two different eras, or even shows in the same era, it's possible they could sound very different tonally and structurally.
or it's possible it's another song entirely that you originally heard.

Maybe just a different version, because it was pretty similar. I actually found that the radio station has a playlist search on their website but it conveniently is missing the the time that we were in the car. I emailed the radio station. It was The Other One.
Part 2 35:04 Grateful Dead 2/23/71 Capitol Theater, Port Chester NY TRUCKIN'-> DRUMS-> THE OTHER ONE-> WHARF RAT

The other one (like dark star) was a vehicle for their spacey weird jams. It got a lot of play in the early 70's and got really out there when keith joined the band. Phil did this little solo known as the philo stomp that would crop up as part of the other one or dark star in 72. The dead also had sections of shows called drums and space where they'd kinda get way out there. So I'm guessing what you heard probably had some of this, especially if the bass was taking the lead.

So now that I solved that mystery do they have other songs that sound like this?
the oracle says you might enjoy “Eyes of the World.”
I'll try that. I think I agree with this review, which is an anomaly on that page of reviews, most of them don't like these performances.
Reviewer: Stephanie Brown - favoritefavoritefavoritefavoritefavorite - May 20, 2007 Subject: Thank you Betty Cantor and Leigh Orf This was the Dead's finest, loveliest year - it just 'works' with one drummer, lots of room for Phil to contribute. He's well up in the mix too !
Especially the part about the bass being up front in the mix.
So I also enjoyed Wharf Rat, but Sugar Magnolia, I don't like and it's what I thought all Dead sounds like.

Look for some st. Stephens and playing in the band (both were vehicles for long abstract jams). Help on the way>slipknot, dark star, morning dew.
