I think there are two kinds of John Mayer; the one who tells us our bodies are wonderlands and the one who shreds with Pino Palladino/Steve Jordan. I'd totally be down for rocking to some good old blues but if he breaks out an acoustic, I think a lot of people would tune out. Depends on which one shows up.
Either way, he's definitely not a main headliner, that's just ridiculous. The main headline talent the Hangout has brought so far has been absolutely phenomenal, whether or not its to your particular taste. John Mayer definitely wouldn't garner a closing headline spot.
The best indication year in and year out for fest headliners is album releases. The last 2 years of the Hangout, 4 out of 6 mainstage headliners released albums the same year as their appearance (RHCP, Jack White, Foo Fighters, Paul Simon).
Anticipated album releases 4Q 2012 and 2013:
Green Day--Tre! (part of a trilogy) Ben Folds Five--TBA Black Sabbath--TBA Alice in Chains--TBA Dr. Dre--Detox Elton John--The Diving Board John Fogerty--Wrote a Song For Everyone Kiss--Monster Kid Cudi--Indicud Lady Gaga--TBA Lil Wayne--I Am Not A Human Being 2 Mumford & Sons--TBA Muse--The 2nd Law Neil Young and Crazy Horse--TBA Pearl Jam--TBA Phoenix--TBA Soundgarden--TBA Avett Brothers--TBA The Beach Boys--TBA The Killers--Battle Born U2--Songs of Ascent
Long list I know, but there are some real possibilities there.

I agree. I think there is are two different Johns, but I like both there's the difference for me, at least. I think some of the greatest artists in history have beautful acoustic songs. Then again- it's your taste too.. If you don't like acoustic- then you don't like acoustic, ya know? To each their own.
But I don't think he'd be a headliner either, but I can dream right? ;D

Pearl Jam and Ben Folds play DeLuna, so I don't think those would work out. NYCH, Green Day, Avetts all play Voodoo. Then again, Jack White played Hangout and is playing Voodoo, so who knows.
Soundgarden wuld be cool, since they had Cornell solo this year. Muse is a huge possibility.

For two out of three headliners coming out of that list: Black Sabbath or Soundgarden | The Beach Boys or Elton John | is easily our best hope for next year. That list is going to grow quite significantly within the next 6 months though.
Just looked at that list, great resource by the way - thank you.
I found a few other releases on that list interesting with possible hangout ramifications:
I am not a fan of rap, really but I could see one of those acts on the bill: 50 cent Akon Busta Rhymes DMX Dr Dre Lil Wayne T.I. Ludacris Public Enemy
Other things I found interesting on the list that could be potentials: Matchbox 20 No Doubt Van Morrison D'Angelo Heart Jim James Matt & Kim Pink Portishead Will.i.am
I'm not saying I want or don't want any of these bands there, but they are all individually plausible IMO.
I do see a few there that I would like to see for sure...
This set up would kind of fit the mold they've had going the past 2 years.
I think this is more likely: WSP > Jack White > Green Day Phish or Mumford & Sons or Muse Foo Fighters > RHCP > U2 Soundgarden or Green Day Paul Simon > DMB > Van Morrison or U2 (no way they get both)
I think I'm running out of headliners that i'd really like to see at festivals.
it seems like I used to get mad psyched for BNAs but I guess I'm running out of artists I really gotta catch that fit that headliner slot.
I'd be beyond thrilled with Phish but that's my band. van Morrison would be cool, and I'd like to see Muse again. Depeche Mode would be amazing to see again.
beyond that the list of names presented isn't really getting my engine going. green day? U2? U2 is so horrible.
I would really count on Phish being there next year. My best prediction would be:
Paul McCartney, Tool/Green Day, Phish/Furthur (or some semblance of the Dead)
I think AJ knows the whole DMB thing pissed off a lot of the real heads out there, but that was his big thing he dreamed of doing so more power to him. I think he will make up for it by landing Phish....remember, DMB and Phish have the same management company, Red Light. They ultimately decide what happens, and it's well known that everyone has wanted Phish down here since Trey's throwdown here 1st year.
The Rolling Stones are def touring next summer, assuming they are all alive then still. They could be doing stadium/arena tour only or they might get pimped around the festival circuit. The U.S festival scene is expanding at an exponential pace right now, and for mega headliners, they are going to get paid more for festi shows than tour dates anyways in most cases.
I would expect the Stones to at least play Coachella or Bonnaroo. Roo seems way more appropriate but Coachella has been after them for a while and they sure as hell seem to score the most truly epic acts.

That's exactly how I feel. I have a running list of my top 50 acts that I'd like to see that I haven't seen, but even some of those I would like and be excited for, but wouldn't really be be ecstatic.
John Mayer's new album is pretty damn good. I've also almost never heard a live song/performance by him (acoustic, electric, with the Trio, with other guests, etc..) that I didn't thoroughly enjoy. He is a great live musician. I hope his voice eventually heals.
I got a free ticket to go see Aerosmith in Biloxi back in '99. The Afghan Whigs opened and I had never heard them before...blown the fuck away. Highlight of Aerosmith's set was seeing lotsa womerns flashing dem tiddeys. I couldn't see that happening with Aerosmith now though.
Steel Panther would be awesome to see on the beach...

Dude! I was @ that show! That was actually my 1st real rock concert... I think I was like 13 @ the time. Small world.
nice! It was a fun show, but I just hate Aerosmith. What made it great for me was that I didn't have to pay a dime for anything. I was 18 or 19 and went with my grandmother's neighbor and her friend (navy milfs). They gave me a ticket, took me there, bought me alcohol, and I could have gotten laid afterwards if it wasn't for the fear of getting killed by their seamen.
Made a reservation at Pheonix. Its a little pricey but it is on the 7th floor overlooking the Chevy Stage. Sleeps 4, I am taking the (only) bedroom with my girl, and a bigger portion of the bill. Anyone interested LMK.
I booked it for 5 nights (get there wed and leave monday) and its just over 1600. So anyone splitting with me, I would only charge less than half of the daily rate for the days they stay. For example:
Stay thursday-sunday Id say 500 would be fair (for 2 people total)
...haven't been on since post fest, so a few random responses.
- the new layout was a huge improvement - yes the 'roo is bigger and better musically, but the physical environment is 100 times better at hangout and this year was probably the best weather the 'roo will ever have. - jambands aside, the possible headliners, and most acts, are dependent on album releases. - Van would be epic. - comaparing J Mayer to Paul Simon is like comparing (insert outrageous comp.) - please more jambands! I guess they counted dave this year, but they shouldn't have. - agree with earlier post about shift from headline itis...that used to be all my crew based our decisions on, but this year J.White was the only one we watched more than 30min's and we had a great time. - can they afford the Stones? or U2? or McCartney? those bands are so much bigger $$$ than most. the 'roo has more than twice the people and now 'chella has two weekends...hard to expect equality. - radiohead was the big miss for hangout this year...insert them for rhcp and !!!!!
2013 dream for me
U2>Phish>Van, Beck>Further>Dr.John randoms: Cornershop, 10ft Ganga Plant, Akron Family, Jayhawks, Tragically Hip
I hope that 2013 is closer to 2011 musically than 2012.
I'm running out of headliners I'd really like to see. Just book Jack White again and Phish.
However, a good move Hangout made this year for those of us no longer suffering from BNA syndrome was having opposing acts during headliners. I think this is a good move, and hope they do it again next year.

100% agree. Esp w/ the Radiohead statement. I would have made sure I was there if Radiohead was there.
Anyone going to the free Dr. John show @ the Hangout this weekend???
