Whether it's your first Bonnaroo or you’re a music festival veteran, we welcome you to Inforoo.
Here you'll find info about artists, rumors, camping tips, and the infamous Roo Clues. Have a look around then create an account and join in the fun. See you at Bonnaroo!!
Bon Iver has two well-received albums and a fairly transcendent live show, and as a Deerhunter fan I consider it possible that someday Halcyon Digest will get the credit it deserves and they could be billed 5th on the Roo lineup.
Yes this is an outrageous statement but just let me have this one
I like Bon Iver and will check out there show but even if you are a huge fan do you really want them headlining? There sound is just too soft for that. That just isnt the kind of music you want playing to the masses of the festival that late in the day. No matter how big they get, there current slot is about as late as they need to play. You have them playing a 10PM to 12PM, you will have everyone going to bed and not going to the LN shows.
Turtles are, actually quite sexy, if you think about it. I’m getting an erection just thinking about turtles. No, not a stripper named turtles, that’s not funny. Actual turtles.

This thread makes me want to punch babies and drown puppies
It's largely just people making wild claims about their favorites. Pretty annoying, I agree.
Yep, a bunch of indie bands and bands that dont have the right sound to headline a festival arent going to be headlining something of this size. While being a huge band is a requirement, you also have to play the right kind of music and 90% of the bands mentioned do not.

So people want to project which bands they like/love that have a headliner sound to them, I'm sorry but there's no problem with that, did anyone think after their first album Arcade Fire was gonna be headlining Bonnaroo, or RHCP for that matter? It's just good fun, go sit back in your room mulling over how much the latest episode of Game of Thrones deviates from the books and let the daydreamers enjoy a thread.

Exactly. Using logic from this thread, my friend's band is a record deal, a few grammy awards, and 3 top ten hits away from being a headliner!
Well yeah... they are. If your friend got a record deal, 3 top ten hits, and multiple grammys, then yes, your friend would be a headliner. Shouldn't need this board to put that together.
If you're gonna be one of this board's many cynics, you should get better at it

As much as I agree that there is very little chance that the bands being mentioned become headliners, I also think that there will be one or two that of these indie bands that will eventually enjoy a lot of mainstream success. And that's basically what this thread is asking... What lower or mid-tier bands could you see make the jump to mainstream?
Arcade Fire is a prime example. Their early stuff was well-received, but The Suburbs is what made them the Alt-Rock Gods they are today.
Deerhunter is one great album short of becoming a big name
Were you at their Bonnaroo show last year? If so, did you see the amount of people that walked out of that show? I'd never seen that many people walk out of a show before, early, too. They're not close to being headlining material. Granted, I'm a fan myself so I'm not attacking the band. I just know that they're not close to being able to draw the amount of people required to be a big name.
Yeah you're right, I noticed that, too.
I still think the live show is very good (The sound was pretty spot on from where I was standing) but they need more showmanship, gotta kick the energy up a little bit.

I thought the show was awful, but that might have just been me because I got zero sleep the night before and had been up for well over 36 hours by that point, so I know that my judgment could have been flawed. If they play Bonnaroo again, I will give them a second chance.

The band itself is pretty hit-or-miss so I definitely hear where you are coming from. The more popular tunes like Desire Lines and Revival were a blast and they were early in the set, and some of the people I went with were pretty much ready for it to be over and hit the silent disco.

. you kinda missed my point. half the posts in this thread have been 'x band is on the verge of getting big!' or 'y artist is a hit album away from being a headliner', and you could make these generalized statements for almost any band

Haha I get you and I apologize for sounding hostile. This thread is definitely all speculation and I can't fault anybody on this board for disliking it, haha.
I just think that two years in a row, we've seen two Pitchfork darlings, Arcade Fire and Bon Iver, emerge around Grammy time and go on to become top 5 acts on our Roo lineup. So I think it's pretty cool to ask, who could it be next year? Or the year after?

No I totally disagree with you, there's plenty of bands I, and many others love, that definitely don't have a headliner sound to them (i.e. tUne-YaRdS, quacked Up, Bon Iver (their way too soft), Delta Spirit, I could go on). Of course this is just opinion, but then again no one is forcing you to read these threads.

Is reading comprehension that difficult? good lord, I've been saying the whole time that there are bands that people keep mentioning that will never be close to being headliners. My point in that post was that people keep throwing out generalized statements about becoming more popular, which hold no merit in regards to them headlining.

I haven't seen Bon Iver live yet, but their Coachella performance looked and sounded like it was pretty mind-blowing. I personally think they should peak as the fifth-billed act at Roo, but itd be hard to rule out future appearances as a headliner.

I think most people agree with this. Bon Iver has peaked as a pre-headliner

I'd like to hear what everyone thinks of Fleet Foxes and their potential to headline in a few years. I'd really like to see Pecknold and friends step up their live show. Vernon has 10 or 11 guys backing him up on Bon Iver's tour, and the sound is pretty huge (again, I'm only basing this on the Coachella performance, SNL performance, and a few other videos). I'd love to see the Fleet Foxes bring out a big group like that.
While they fall into the same genre as slow-tempo Bonny Bear, some of the Foxes' best tunes have more of a pace to them. Songs like Battery Kinzie, Grown Ocean, and White Winter Hymnal would be huge!

I can't see their ceiling being any higher than a pre-headliner.
