M83, Foster the People, Gary Clark Jr, and Moon Taxi are reasonable bets. I'd say MGMT, but I guess they already headlined coachella and moogfest. Florence yes, but again I think she already was a coachella headliner or maybe she was just a mid idk
Though we all know deep down the correct answer is Mac Miller....
Bonnaroo 2016:
Friday Night What: Unchained 7:00-9:00 > Mac Miller 10-12:00
Followed by Skrillex and Deadmau5 playing back-to-back 4 hour sets on Saturday 8:00pm - 5:00am (hour break to swap sets). Deadmau5 first late-night What act ever, one-upping his buddy Skrillex who was the first EDM act on Which late night. The Earth cracks open and hellspawns spew out like in the South Park movie. Happy Bonnaroo.

If Daft Punk doesn't take the title of 'First What stage EDM act' I'm going to be very disappointed in Bonnaroo. They already tainted the history of the Which stage by having Skrillex be the first EDM artist to perform on it, they better make up for it next year with Daft Punk

In order from most-likely to least-likely:
Florence + the Machine - She's really close. She's doing a 10k-size venue near me, and 25k one in Ft. Lauderdale, not to mention a #3 billing at Deluna (although there could be another headliner). She can definitely do it.
Mumford and Sons: Their last album sold like hotcakes, and their new one would too. I expect them headlining (or really really close) whenever that comes out. If The Black Keys and Kings of Leon could do it, so could they.
My Morning Jacket: They're just so huge in the festival circuit. I love them, but I don't think they have much mainstream appeal. But their fans are very dedicated, and that can be enough in some cases. If they have another great album, I could see them headlining.
Deadmau5/Skrillex - Deadmau5 hasn't done as much lately, but now that EDM is bigger than ever, and he's still a big name, it's not too late for him to jump back in. Being a headliner per se might be hard, but if anyone could do it, it's him. Skrillex has blown up like crazy in the last year, and he's pretty much a household name at this point. If Avicii can do arenas, so can he, which I think he'll do on his next tour. If he isn't at the peak of his popularity yet, going up from where he is almost headliner status. And he sold out freaking Petco Park.
Drake/Wiz Khalifa - They're both getting huge and headlining ampitheaters (although Wiz's next tour also has him co-headlining with Mac Miller), but I think it'll be awhile, if ever, for them to headline a festival. I don't know if they're capable of the same reach as Jay-Z/Eminem/Kanye. Look at Lil Wayne: he can sell a million albums in a week, but he's not as universally liked/respected as the other three (they all have their haters, but you can't deny their appeal), and I think that's what holds him back from headliner status. That could be what holds these two back as well.
Adele - Can't believe she hasn't been said. Not likely for Roo or other festivals necessarily, but she will definitely draw huge crowd wherever she goes now, considering how big her last album was. She would definitely be a top 5 act if she played now though.
Foster the People - They just need to prove they aren't a one-hit wonder band. I love them, and their album is great, but they need more material, and another big hit. I don't think it will happen for them, but they're ones to keeps an eye on.
Phoenix - I don't seem as that likely, but they shouldn't be ruled out. If they can make another leap in popularity like Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix helped them do, then it's possible.
Bon Iver - This one's a big maybe, but I'm guessing no. But they could pull an Arcade Fire and do it with one more album. I just don't see them as the type of band to headline. I don't know if I could see them doing it though.
The Avett Brothers - I don't really see it for them either. Granted, they have already gotten bigger than I expected them to, but I think they're at the peak of their popularity, or nearing it. They have a small chance, I'd say.
Ones that I think are pretty much there:
Jack White - He's headlining a lot already, but he still plays theaters. I'm not sure if I see him playing arenas and ampitheaters, but if he has a big enough single on his solo album, then that could give him the extra push. He'd sell out MSG easily though.
Zac Brown Band - They're definitely getting bigger. By their next album, they could definitely do it. I could actually see them as a Sunday Roo headliner, and I don't think many people would have a problem with it. Plus, they sold out there 20k ampitheater here, which not a lot of bands do here (Journey, Jason Aldean, and Jimmy Buffett are the only ones I can think of off hand, although I'm sure there's more than that, but maybe not recently).
The Black Keys - Actually, they already are. They play arenas and headline all of their festival shows now. If they come back to Roo, I'll be very shocked if it's not a Friday HL spot. They shouldn't really be mentioned in this thread as a potential HL if they already are.
Bands mentioned in this thread that I don't think it will happen for:
Modest Mouse Animal Collective MGMT Wilco The Flaming Lips The Shins Death Cab for Cutie Bloc Party Sigur Ros Pretty Lights Justice M83 SBTRKT and more I haven't listed. Nothing against any of them, but I just don't see it.
Zac Brown Band - They're definitely getting bigger. By their next album, they could definitely do it. I could actually see them as a Sunday Roo headliner, and I don't think many people would have a problem with it.
I would. Although to be honest there have not been many Roo Sunday headliners that I care for. Im excited for Phish but unless they let MMJ or Neil close the fest I probably will continue to not care for the Sunday HLers much, so go ahead and let ZBB do it

Yeah, what I meant was that I don't think it would really be met with too much backlash at all. I'm not a big fan myself (haven'y listen to them that much), but I think people would be much more happy about that than if Widespread Panic played again. Since DMB also played there, it allows a more mainstream to play the slot in the future.
The obvious ones that will be within 2 years are -Jack White (next year) -The National (as soon as they put out next album) -Mumford & Sons (if next album pops as well)
MMJ and Jack White are probably currently headliner level, as well as Adele, so I'm leaving them out.
Florence, Mumford, Avett Brothers, Bon Iver, Wilco, FtP, Phoenix, and ZBB are probably one more big release away from headliner status. All the big current "hip" electronic artists (Skrillex, Avicii, Bassnectar, Deadmau5) have probably reached the peak of their popularity but I don't see them headlining 'roo, but definitely other fests.
My list of bands that need a few releases to reach that level, in order of likelihood in my opinion: Drake Death Cab fun. The Civil Wars Fleet Foxes Alabama Shakes M83 Miike Snow Deerhunter Mastodon Edward Sharpe War on NO NO WORD!!!
Long Shots: Decemberists (depending on length of hiatus), Gary Clark Jr., and Reptar Long Long Shots: Art vs. Science and Sister Sparrow and the Dirty Birds (both cafe acts this year, have ingredients for success)
Sister Sparrow and The Dirty Birds def have the ingredients for success!!! If they are headlining festivals in 5 years (they are already making main stage appearances up North) I will be the happiest gal on the planet...besides Miss Sparrow herself!
I love the complete insanity in this thread. Seriously.
Youre favorite niche indie rock act is not going to headline Bonnaroo. Ever. No matter how many 9.8 ratings they get from Pitchfork. They seem a lot more popular than they are because you live in a bubble where you love them, and the people you interact with love them, and you see festival shows where they attract 15,000 people. But it's a fallacy, by and large.
Look pal, if you don't think John Maus has what it takes to headline Bonnaroo, just come out and say it.

MMJ is destined to become the next sunday headliner we get every 3 years.
I think the Civil Wars and Childish Gambino from this year's group will end up getting pretty huge.
I could see bands like Alabama Shakes, Sleigh Bells, Bon Iver, Pretty Lights, Explosions In The Sky, and Santigold sticking around for a while.
I bet three years from now, Santigold or Civil Wars could be billed top 10-15 at Roo, depending on how new material is received. I'm also somebody who thinks Deerhunter should be WAY more popular... Halcyon Digest is amazing.

Just thinking out loud
You just put a Grammy winning band on the same plane as Alabama Shakes, EITS, and Pretty LIghts. All acts I enjoy, but Bon Iver is already way bigger than they are.
I think Civil Wars have a great shot for that 10-15 range, but this thread is about headliners. People are either using the term "headliner" too loosely, or they are delusional as to which bands really have that potential. They're not asking which bands will be more popular in 5 years, they're asking which bands will be MOST popular. Huge difference.
Someone's gonna get big, It doesn't take that much. That being said, there are still a ton of headliner-level acts that Roo has yet to book (most of which will happen in the next five years)
-When I Hear My Name -Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground -Blue Orchid -Passive Manipulation -Red Rain -Death Letter -My Doorbell -Hotel Yorba -Same Boy You've Always Known -Lovesick -Little Ghost -We're Going to Be Friends -The Hardest Button to Button -Black Math -The Nurse -I Just Don't Know What to Do With Myself
Encore: -Ball and Biscuit -Seven Nation Army -Screwdriver

I can see string cheese getting to close out what on sunday in the next few years if they keep playing as good as they did on last fall's tour. Not alot to choose from for a jam closer so if they can pick up steam I could see it happening.
As far as fri/sat I have almost no idea. Roo has surprised me enough times to not really know what to expect anymore.

There are a lot of bands that are basically one great album or maybe just one great song away from a top 6 or 7 slot on the lineup. Some have a lot of material and some don't. I'd throw Local Natives or Grizzly Bear out there, as much as its a longshot.
One thing I'm pretty damn sure about, though, is that Gary Clark has some serious star power.

Unless Bonnaroo suddenly stops being popular and becomes Gathering of the Vibes, SCI won't headline. They couldn't even headline back in 2002 or 2003 when it was a jam-centric fest, and they're less popular now.
For jam closers you'll continue to see a rotation of Phish/Panic/Dave Matthews/Dead-related spin offs.
I really want to see STS9 and Umphrey's make the leap to this level. Not saying I see it happening, but it would be incredible to me.
What, you don't think that Beach House's marginally popular brand of mellow, hazy dream-pop will be rocking HUGE F*CKING STAGES in 5 years? Come on!
I agree it's unlikely to see someone like Beach House headlining, but they're capable of getting to top 5. Look at Bon Iver; two years ago I'd have given him no chance of being billed so high at festivals. One very good album later that caught the eyes of the folks who run the Grammys and he skyrockets in popularity and up the billing. I'm sure there will be one band in the range of Beach House, Deerhunter, Fleet Foxes, and Grizzly Bear who makes the same leap Bon Iver did. I know Bon Iver isn't headlining, but he's in the conversation for it in 5 years. I don't see how the bands above are that different from Bon Iver before their eponymous album.
