Yeah I agree with that. First time I saw him was at Deluna in 2012 when he was playing a parking lot set for fans to jam to while leaving. I’ve seen him a couple other times and 2x with Jack U and once or twice with Major Lazer. You think of him as an obnoxious douchebag kind of DJ, but he can be humble in person and in interviews. Jack U used to sneak in a bar or two of King Crimson’s 21st Century Schizoid Man into their playlist. So you know that isn’t just some random sample.
I also agree with you that we are a big element or essential ingredient in the overall mix of American music. Just like creole food, you’re taking from the many different influences that were here - French, Spanish, Afro-Caribbean, Irish, German and such. Same went for the music. I heard Wendell Pierce explaining it once on Bordain. The brothers used to hear the jazz guys playing 6th notes and shit and got that into the groove to go along with traditional rhythms whereas plenty of white musicians learned spirituality and the ability to put feeling (soul) into what they were playing. Two of my uncles (white) played jazz since the 1950’s and in mixed race bands which was illegal and often busted leading to arrest or busted up heads. One of them who is still alive and a well known author wrote a book a decade or so back on the lost years of jazz (early 60’s). He reiterated that the best and most experimental jazz at the time was being played in strip clubs for the dancers who often performed with/to live bands back then.

does anyone here watch any videos from The Punk Rock MBA? if not i'd like to plug it for my fellow music nerds. he makes interesting videos about a variety of punk and metal genres and bands, typically under the title of things like "what killed <genre x>" or "<band y> should have been bigger". It's been interesting to me because I have a massive hole in my music knowledge about the punk/metal/metalcore scene, particularly in the post nu-metal era through current day.
videos typically run around 20 minutes, it's a worthwhile way to spend your time, and i've discovered lots of new-to-me music through his channel. I was just mentioning Nascar Aloe in another thread, shit is wild.

Scrolling through his videos brought me back in time. Not sure how I feel about any of it.
I hate moving. My last was literally 2 blks away. My first apartment we had the ceiling collapse and had to move over one apartment, but it was the complete other end of the hallway. That was still the worst move that I've ever experienced.
Moving is terrible. Mostly the realization that you have soooooo much shit. And in the weeks before our last move a few years ago I donated, sold, or threw away a tremendous about of stuff, and it was still soooo much shit.
The records actually weren't so awful, since I keep them in modular hardwood crates I could just move them in those. Still a pain but not as bad as say cleaning out the old garage or moving clothes.

This is my pain today. We're trashing everything. Have a baby and need baby shit? PM me. T1-4 clothes? PM me. A case of desert dishes from when I was opening a coffee shop? PM me.
Our struggle is we have to be out of the place on the 15th and can't move in to the new one till the 16th. Buying houses when you own a house is bullshit, fyi

oooohhh bless you. Those U-line boxes are perfect. Last time I moved I packed boxes with WAY too many records and it made it real fun to get them inside the apartment. Now I'm going to spend all of July 4 weekend trying to measure my knick knacks by volume so I can buy a bunch of boxes haha.
ha thanks. I've got two Ikea Kallax shelves that hold all of my records, books, movies, etc. and based on my measurements each box is the same size as a shelf cut out. Now I just gotta figure out how many, like, dinner plates I can fit in one of those.

If those shelves are 13 x 13, should be about 60 to 65 records. That said, count gatefolds as 2 albums. I made that mistake once and will never do that again.

Records suck but my wife is a librarian. So many books we have. Just shit tons of books. Just the worst. It's honestly one of the reasons that I'm dragging my feet on looking for a new house even though we really need more space.

I have so many books and have widdled them down several times. Only 3 shelves now, but it's still too many.

Box them and don't label them, then hire a few dudes on Facebook Marketplace for like $50 and kick back with a mimosa. It's drama. It's comedy. Seriously the best hour of non tv you'll get in months.

We both find out difficult to part with books. Her stepfather custom built us two giant bookcases after we moved in. It's ridiculous. Then we've added another three bookcases for the kids. Ugh.
Hey everyone! A good friend of mine is having lots of issues at home, and is close to being homeless, but a group of our friends put together a compilation for him on Bandcamp, including Xiu Xiu, Algiers, Floral Tattoo, and much more. There's some more info about in on the page: songsforandrew.bandcamp.com/album/songs-for-andrew

kallax gang.
I just put all mine in painter crates, no lids, can't really stack but they're cheap/sturdy/easy to move

Nice! I have exactly one peach crate that I'd like to store some records in when I get set up in my new place. It's Sunny Slope Brand though and I want a Pearson one to rep my favorite farm.
