Do ya'll think AC would play the LN Which? I think they're borderline. They keep surprising me with their popularity, I mean, they're playing Verizon Amphitheatre in Atlanta. Same venue that Arcade Fire played.
I don't know if they are quite on that level yet, maybe by next summer they will be. But whose to say they wouldn't have a huge turnout if they were scheduled there? They would certainly overflow a tent unless there were some big draws scheduled at the same time.
I really think they would have to be on Which, think about the crowd that showed up in 09 for them, and then picture that crowd try to fit into any of the tents...

Sure, they packed the Which stage during Grace Potter, St. Vincent & Bela Fleck. But they would be up against a much stronger lineup in a late night setting, most likely.
I'm pretty sure they asked to be scheduled during the day because somebody in the group had a wedding to attend later that night. (I'm not making this up, I totally remember this discussion back in 2009)
Somehow I just don't see Animal Collective in a late night which spot. I agree they're almost there. But not quite. Latenight tent. or daytime which
If they are LN in a tent it will definitely be a packed tent. If they play in a tent with somebody like MGMT, Local Natives, or Grizzly Bear I know exactly where I'll be for that night.
Daytime which? So repeat the crash and burn AGAIN?
I meant it more in the sense of if they played which they would only get a day spot, not a latenight. They need a latenight though, definitely
I just don't see them popular enough to play LN which. As a comparision, I dont think they have achieved the popularity of acts like Lil Wayne, SCI, MMJ, F'lips yet who have played the which LN. And are they really more popular than acts who have played LN tents? Like big boi, deadmau5, mgmt, etc?

Eh, I don't know. I think they've got enough cachet that an Animal Collective LN Which show would draw quite the crowd, especially if they release another album in the next year.
I actually wouldn't mind them in the "daytime" again, provided that it was around sunset or so. Having them play around 7:30/8:00 would be fine.
I think that Animal Collective has a larger following than MGMT, Big Boi, or Deadmau5. I know a lot of people who like, for example, both Animal Collective and Big Boi, and who would go to an AC show over any other (and have), but are willing to skip Big Boi for a lot of other stuff. I'll agree they're not as big as the Flaming Lips, but the FLips could probably play the What Stage LN if they wanted to. I think AC is about the smallest a band could be and still hold down a LN Which. Especially if they did a really awesome light show.
That being said, I'd be cool with them taking the Which spot Primus/BS had this year, since it would still be dark.
Exactly. They are right on the cutoff, popularity wise. So the arguments for both sides make sense.
Regardless, I think they should have a long set when it's dark out. Whether or not its a technical "late night" set does not matter, but I personally think a LN tent closing set would be the best.

I remember back in 2009 before the lineup came out, I was 100% supporting the call for M83 -> Animal Collective for a late night tent. I think I'm going to reinstate that wish for 2012.
In regards to tent vs. which, they would certainly be a huge tent act, but I don't think they're a Which act yet unless the album does very well. Let's not forget, LN tents have some huge acts, I feel like Animal Collective is relatively on comparable to MGMT and LCD Soundsystem, both of which were in a tent.
From what I've heard/read of the new album it's supposed to be more out there than the previous. At Coachella they came out and said, "We're here to bring the wierd." And in the vids I saw they weren't kidding. That being said I don't know if an album like that is going to boost popularity. (Think MGMT's last album)
I think a tent makes the most sense, especially when compared to MGMT and LCD.
Off topic, what was with the sound on the Which? Every show there seemed so quiet except for the Lil Wayne show we could hear loud and clear from camp in pod 8.
