I honestly think people just associate him with Season 1 .vs. Adam Scott and Rob Lowe coming in later. So while htey don't like the first season in general it leads to "well this was the problem" type of stuff. It definitely gets better after he leaves but I also feel like they could have shifted things to make it work given time.

Kinda related, but not. I'm always surprised on rewatches when I realize that Mark and Ben/Chris are actually in several episodes together at the end of S2. They feel like such seperate eras of the show, but they do overlap.

Apparently the guy who played him said it was his choice to leave. I guess he was brought on with one direction for the character, and when it started to pivot a lot he didn’t really agree and decided to leave.

I think Mark is too straight of a straight man. Ben is the straight man and is definitely saner than everyone else, but he's not really altogether himself. Mark was a regular guy who worked with a bunch of weirdos. Like itm said, I think they could have made him work over time. There was more wrong with S1 than just Mark. Good to see Paul Schneider was willing to leave if he didn't feel the show was right for him though.
