As you may know, many people are saying on December 21, 2012(or around that time) our world will change, the world as we know it will end. I am not saying the "sky is falling", but I think we should not push this off as another Y2K, or religious freak on the corner holding a sign saying,"Repent! God is coming!". I think this need some attention. Again, I am not claiming end of the world, just the end as we know it. Thanks REM.
I know there are many websites for this topic, but I wanted to discuss this with the Inforoo family. When that day comes and if it is what people are saying it will be, then there is a possibility where my family and I will need to relocate from Florida and when I think about where would we go, where is a large place we can relocate to, a place that is not on the coast(at that time the coast line might not be what or where it is today), a place inland somewhere, I think of the Farm. That is correct, if 2012 is true and I am forced to evacuate Florida, the Farm is where I will be headed. Why there, because after posting this thread, I plan on others being there and I will have a place to pool resources. I recently saw a post on Facebook from Sassbox(not sure that handle is right, but LP from na'orleans) and this prediction got me a wondering and a thinking. www.december212012.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=10524 (I know it says the post was modified on 03-11-11, but that was at 5:30pmish. I saw this in the morning, hours after the earthquake, and at that time it had not been modified. This guy really, "nailed it!")
After seeing this and the past week of coverage of Japan, I believe I need to start to prepare for survival. At least, make it possible for me and my family to survive for weeks without any services. (aka open stores, places to get food, ect.)
Please do not post on here how crazy you think I am or how wrong you think I am. If you do not believe in 2012 and think it is just BS, than keep that belief to yourself. If you have information or constructive criticism to counter, please inform me, but do not chastise or make fun of what some of us are taking a little bit more serious than you are.
While you alluded to it in your post (about the transformation of the coastline), what exactly do think is going to happen- predicting specifics is difficult, but also giving vague blanket statements such as 'the end as we know it' aren't helpful.
Scrog, I don't intend to belittle your post, but it reminded me of this little flyer we received while waiting in line for Bonnaroo in 2009:
I also remember the idea of "the world as we know it will change" when that comet thing was nearby in the 1990s. My friend's mom was obsessed with the idea that the coastlines were going to change and California was going to fall off into the ocean in 1998.

I consider this and indication of our impending doom.
Also, as great as the farm is.....probably the worst place to go....the last place you will want to be is out in the open........that is assuming that after shit goes down, society breaks down to a Red Dawn state. then in that case...all the people here who oppose guns will be at a major disadvantage.

Well...in general, I do think Americans enjoy a false sense of security when it comes to catastrophic events and we could be much more self-sufficient. Maybe that sense of security doesn't apply if you're from the Gulf Coast and had it taken from you in recent years, but it certainly applies to many of us elsewhere, myself included. I do think that between economic upheaval, energy shortages and just the natural progression of natural disasters, a confluence of just a few events could hit us harder than at other times. I don't think we can predict it so patly, but I don't think its tinfoil hattery to prepare to be self-sufficient. Even for 'everyday' disasters... I can't tell you how many people I know got in real trouble during the Snowpocalypse this winter because they didn't have shovels, money, medications or bottled water on hand. And we knew that was coming!
Deat, specifics are difficult, if they were easy than we would have nothing to worry about. Just prepare for the scenario, that day, and all will be good, but it is not that easy. The question, What is going to happen? I have no clue, but I do believe my world will change, from what I know of it today. 9/11 changed how I travel, but that is about it. My world is still pretty much the same. I am thinking not world change like 9/11, maybe Katrina-ish, but I am thinking changing like Japan has. I believe there will come a time where I will not be able to go to the store and buy a loaf of bread or any groceries for that matter. I will have to survive with what is in my fridge/pantry. I have already experience this on a small scale. When hurricanes hit Florida, there have been times food was very low in the stores. When gas skyrocketed a few years ago and truckers talked about strikes related to fuel cost, I could see us in the situation of no food on the shelves scenario. This past winner, I heard many talking about lack of food on the shelves during the Snowpocalypse. Look at Japan right now. Tokyo is a very industrialized city, just like most cites here in America, and look at it, no food on the shelves. One can not deny our system is built like a house of cards. Our system is very fragile. There are many events that could break our system, from natural disasters to fuel issues, we have already seen some events that have put stress on the system. One day it will break, like, but worse than Katrina. julie, you did not belittle my post at all. I want to see people prove me wrong. I want to be wrong on this. I just don't think I am. There have been a lot of false end of times events(comets, Y2k, ect.) and I hope this is one of those times. I would rather be wrong on this, then be right and not be prepared. When I was a young boy, my Moms boyfriend, soon to be husband, then soon to be ex-husband, told me about a time when the world would burn or be flooded, the "end times" as he called it. I was young, he scared me at that time. He mentioned it would be around 10-15 year past the 2000 year, he was speaking from the bible. Two years ago someone turned me onto 2012, our solar system planets alignment, magnetic pole shifting, the Mayan calender ending, and other things. I think major religions speak of this time, the End Times. I have heard about this time, the end of Times my whole life. With so much energy being put into this, with so many people taking about this, I think I would be stupid to not prepare myself to be able to survive without the "house of cards" we all live in. I think even if nothing happens, no natural disasters, no return of Gods(aka aliens), no asteroids hit earth, if nothing happens, something will happen just from people's anticipation that something going to happen. Suicide rates will go up, people stop going to work, some crazy jumping on the "end time" wave and blows something up, in turn causing some form of hysteria, next thing you know it is survival time. mizvalentine you said exactly what I am thinking, just in a more articulate way and that is what this post was intended for; a way to discuss survival plans, a way to educate me and others on how to be self-sufficient. We must be more self-sufficient. We must re-learn to survive without a store to get food from. We must re-learn to live with out electricity and running water. We must re-learn what many people knew how to do only 100 years ago. We must re-learn how to survive.
And yes Steetbum, 12.21.12 is on a Friday!!!! KDogg thanks for the Bill Hicks humor, I needed that!
I think because of all the energy directed toward this event. It is not just one comet, or a single glitch in out computer system. There seem to be multiple things. It is the end of the Mayan calender. Does this mean anything or did they just run out of rock? Switching of our north and south poles. This happens between million years to every 100,000 or so and proof of this can be found at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean. Last time there was a reversal was over 750,000. Some say the reversal itself will take hundreds years, while others say it will happen a lot quicker. some say planetary alignment will aid in this reversal. Will the planets and sun and center of our galaxy all be in alignment in 2012? I have no idea, but there is a large buzz about it. Most religions talk about this time. The dreams I have. The feeling, thoughts I get. There just seems to be a lot going on, political issues, financial woes, Iran trying to nuke up Israel(at least wanting to destroy), it is like the pot is a boiling and at some point the lid is going to blow off. Again, if nothing happens, I still believe the anticipation of something happening, will cause people to act differently, in turn causing a scenario where we will have to go some time with out the resources we all so depend on.

It's my belief that something is going to happen in 2012. - NASA has said that, starting in 2011 and peaking in december 2012, Earth will be bombarded with large amounts of radiation from extra solar activity. I believe that this might hit us during a "pole shift" which would be devastating. - I saw a documentary (Nova?) last year that discussed the pole shift studies and theories saying some pieces/sections of the electromagnetisphere sp? are already switching and that it is a slow process and during the shift there will be a period where there will be no protection. The switch might not necessarily fluctuate the gravity, plates, crust and ocean levels but would rather leave the planet unprotected from the constant levels of radiation that are already floating towards us. - The government definitely have underground bunkers for their "chosen officials" (politicians, ceos, kidnapped supermodels) in any case of attack, both under washington d.c. and out in the heartland. - I don't know what is truth but I think there are several different ways in can go.

Here is a different take on 2012... - This guy is hard to follow sometimes and has some facts wrong but those are insignificant to the awesome theories and imaginative thoughts he comes up with. I hope he's right about the galactic frequency shift, where the next step of evolution in all species of the universe will kick in and speed up.
Scientific theory! We haven't been past the moon yet. We kill each other by the millions at times. We can't predict our on species, we are certainly far away from truly understanding cosmic events.
The government definitely have underground bunkers for their "chosen officials" (politicians, ceos, kidnapped supermodels) in any case of attack, both under washington d.c. and out in the heartland.
Yes, we all know this. What does this prove about 2012? Really, you bring this up as a talking point?
The Government has security measures incase of attack? Holy Leno! It's the end of the world.
- I don't know what is truth but I think there are several different ways in can go.
You've convinced me.

I will say, I'm much more concerned with the actions of my fellow humans than with cosmic cataclysm. We're always going to have natural disasters, its inevitable and unavoidable, but both humans and the planet are highly resilient, moreso than we probably give either credit for.
When it comes to devastation, as superfurryanimal sort of said (don't wanna put words in your mouth), we're way better at wiping ourselves out than nature is at taking us down. We move so fast around the world and effect so many more people with our actions than at any other time in our history, I think that an old-fashioned disaster like pandemic flu will move faster and farther and cause more devastation than it would've previously. Its a boring kind of apocalypse but I do see it happening in my lifetime. I don't think we're anywhere near ready for pandemic flu (and that's pretty accepted in traditional public health policy circles), mostly because local public health is so woefully disorganized and underfunded.
So in addition to expecting the unexpected in general (learn first aid and cpr, keep food and water on hand, know how to fix your own car, have enough medication to get you through, know your local evacuation routes, know how to protect yourself), I think there's something to be said for taking a hard look at what your government is and isn't doing for crisis management and make plans to fill in the gaps where they aren't going to help you. And local government is the key; people underestimate how important their cities and towns are in keeping them safe. Everybody focuses on Washington but nobody votes in their own town. Yet if you don't have a local crisis management team, your local firehouse is unfunded, your bridges and levees aren't up to code and you've got 10 EMTs for ten thousand people, its not Washington's fault.
Big ideas like cosmic apocolypse and pole shifts are interesting, to be sure, and let the imagination and the mind work expansively, and can inspire us to new ideas about ourselves and our world. They definitely have worth. But just as worthy is the boring, unsexy fact that the best thing you can do is get involved and really KNOW what you and your family are up against. And change it. The human stuff is really the only thing we CAN change, and unfortunately its often the last thing we think of.
12/21/2012 is the date that we on the New Madrid fault line will experience and magnitude 9.5 earthquake. Hence, that is the date that all of my worldly positions will be cast, flaming, into a great big god damn hole in the ground.

This is a common misconception of the Mayan calendar... The Mayan's constructed their calendar around astrological cycles in which they believed if they did not please the gods during that cycle they would be punished.. before they constructed their calendar as we know it today it was much shorter.. they lengthened the cycles out of fear that they had not please the gods.. On Dec. 21, 2012 the calendar cycle comes to end but the new cycle will start Dec.22, 2012... so their calendar does not say it will be the end of time but the end of a cycle and the start of a new one.. you should not fear this unless you believe in the Mayan Gods and fear that you did not please them during that time
The planetary alignment (and the gravitational forces it would impact earth with) could also potentially cause the moon to slow in its orbit around earth. If this happened, the moon would, over the course of 1 to 3 weeks, spiral around and eventually strike earth. The weeks leading up to impact would be filled with hellish earthquakes, super volcanic eruptions, and massive tidal floods. When the impact occurs, it will extinguish ALL life on earth, even bacteria.

Eh, why worry when you can't control it. If something Really Bad does come down the pipe, I'd rather it be epically big like that. All you can do is make sure you've got enough substances to go out comfortably, grab a hammock and watch the sun set.

This sounds like a much more fun way to go than a flu pandemic!
This type of fear of the "Ends Times" has always been around, obviously. But I think the internet has made it much easier for new "End Times" ideas to get passed around. If the internet had been huge back in the 1990s when that comet-thing was coming, I'm sure we'd have heard about it more frequently.
I'm going to die; you're going to die; it's a part of the circle of life. Just enjoy what time you have folks!
Scrog, I don't intend to belittle your post, but it reminded me of this little flyer we received while waiting in line for Bonnaroo in 2009:

Good old Weatherbill, he is also the person who started the Bee safe at 'roo thread that got hijacked into corncat.

Just to expand, clarify, and offer evidence in both directions...
Forgive my spelling errors, I don't have time to look all this up. The Mayan calendar is comprised 5 units of time, Kin, Winal, Tun, Katun, and Baktun.
a Kin is 1 Day (and I will just call it a Day now) a Winal is 20 Days a Tun is 18 Winals (Nearly 1 year) a Katun is 20 Tuns a Baktun is 20 Katuns (Approx 394 years)
12/21/2012 is the last day of the 13th Baktun of the Mayan Calendar, the following day, the Mayan Long Count Resets.
And for the record I am not scared of 12212012. In the incredibly slim chance that something major does happen, there aint shit I can do about it. That doesn't mean that I won't take a big loan, go to vegas, and spend it all on hookers and blow.
Once again Scrog, or anyone who believes in 2012, specifics are difficult, but elaborate as much as possible: why 12/21/12? Why is this date the one where everything is going to change?
This second question is kind of tied into the first: what is governing this change? What is making certain this change will unfold?
Scrog, I meant to link you a book that you might enjoy. A former Rolling Stone writer spent a year or so learning everything he could about being a survivalist. It's a really thought provoking read and quite entertaining. I think you would really enjoy it and be surprised at the outcome.
SFA, Thinks for the link. I will check that book out.
Jhammett, I think you owe Kdogg a response, you promised him 10 days ago in the Scott Walker is going down thread. You should concentrate on that.
CPK, I think you might have the Mayan calender wrong. Can not believe I am going to say it, but I think Jhammett (fuck that is hard to type)I think Jhammett, has it more right than you do.(oh god I just said it, Jhammett and right in the same sentence, it is the end of the world)
Yoga, you lost soul. The best way to debate is to insult the other, call them nuts or say they are more of a lunatic than the 9/11 inside job believers. This brings a lot of cred to what you have to say. If you had "information or constructive criticism", then yes, I would be more than willing to hear what you have to say, but you did not. You did just what I ask you not to do and now I must respond.
How do you know what the Mayans comprehended? They know more about the moon cycles, planetary alignment and the Sun and Stars than you are I will ever know. How can you try to discredit someone, when you have no facts? I am trying to get people to think about, how will you survive if you can not get food from the store. This comes from what I see in the world today. There are many scenarios(natural disasters, Nuclear fallout, EMP bombs, pandemics, ect)that could lead to this situation where we are unable to get food from from a central location when we want it. Why would you want to discredit someone promoting one to learn how to survive? I will do this for you. When the times comes, everybody who disagrees with me will get a can of food from me, for free, but you, you will have to get on your knees and work for your can of beans, put that yoga to good use.
Deat, the date comes from the Mayan calender and the day the planets will all be in alignment. I am not so worried about that day, because if some of the scenarios happen like poles shifting(no protection from the Sun), comets hitting Earth, return of God(aka Aliens), than we are all going to be dead. I am more worried about the time leading up to that. I am more worried about the other scenarios, where we are still left on this planet, there is no food in the store. No gas at the station. Chaos happens and anarchy takes over. I think we all should be prepared to be able to survive. MizValentine is in my brain. She has said it best.
"I will say, I'm much more concerned with the actions of my fellow humans than with cosmic cataclysm. We're always going to have natural disasters, its inevitable and unavoidable, but both humans and the planet are highly resilient, moreso than we probably give either credit for.

Yoga, you have a deal, as long as NTRT does not eat you first, you and your yoga partner can entertain me for a can of beans, hell make it two cans. I do not see the latter happening, because I have none of those things you speak of to sell off.

That's cool with me, Juggs. If you want to roll with me, I'm heading to Manchester, TN when the shit goes down. I hear there'll be lot of unarmed hippies there ripe for the picking. "The Farm," indeed.
