i stayed at the campgrounds last year. i volunteered to work and got a free ticket, and stayed at the campgrounds for 4 nights ($25 a night or so).
I arrived around 5 or 6 on thursday afternoon and didnt have a problem getting a tent spot and made friends w/ everyone around me. it was great having a nice shower just a few steps away.
The first morning i drove my car across the street and parked on at Gulf Sate Park beach and walked the beach to the festival. it was nice, but a long walk, especially the walk back that night!
the next morning i got up early and parked right across the street from the fest, took a cooler and chair out to the beach and enjoyed some beach time before the gates opened...
sunday i took the shuttle, it was raining so everyone was rushing on and i didnt have to pay (cheap transport, nice!)
I would suggest what i did the second day... leave early (your already up w/ the sun) and park right next to the festival and take your cooler, clothes and swim suit and enjoy the beach each morning before the gates open. when they are close to opening shower off at the shower next to the pool at Phoenix (i think), dry off and take your cooler back to your car... enjoy the fest and drive back afterward (if your sober of course!, if not catch a ride back on the shuttle)

If this were a camping fest i'd do this over bonnaroo... its cheaper and has most of the shows i wanna see at roo + more. and its a shorter drive. But hotels make it financially difficult

I am camping at the state park, my site is 23 a night has electricity, and there is a showerhouse and store on the grounds. Also They run shuttles back and forth all day, I Am with you on the hotel thing though it is expensive down there.
Although, really it's not much more expensive. Bonnaroo tickets are $80-$120 more expensive than the Hangout and a condo (at least the one I've rented) is going to cost about $100-$120 per person for 4 nights. Granted you have the opportunity to see more music at Bonnaroo with the Thursday night shows and long late-nights. But from a strict cost standpoint they are comparable.
Travel expense is another issue, of course, for some people. The 2 fests are about the same distance from me, though.
The pricing for Hangout ended up actually being cheaper then Roo and thats counting ticket and 4 nights in a penthouse. Hangout is definitely further for us (Roo = 10 hr drive, Hangout = 17) though but were driving straight through so no extra travel expenses there
If you can get a group for Hangout its so cheap you cant pass it up

None of my friends are sold with this roo lineup. My friends who listen to mainstream stuff dont even know anyone besides like em, wayne, strokes, + a few others, none of which are they into. And my festie friends are so turned off by em and wayne theyre doing waka instead (which i may do as a last resort) But I may be able to convince my 'mainstream' friends to do hangout if im lucky.

actually, condos for the hangout are really cheap depending on the size of your group. when i was looking at going, my friend called around and found one for $360 for 3 nights, sleeps 6, less than a mile from the fest. and another that was closer, $450 for 3 nights, sleeps 6. even the most expensive one with 6 people makes it $75/person for the entire weekend. not to mention you get your own kitchen so you don't have to eat out.
there is no way i would camp down there. i'm not saying anything is wrong w the camping at all down there. actually the weather and the setups are perfect, BUT, why would you want to camp when you can have a condo for the same price.
our 1 bedroom condo new everything, beds flatscreens wi fi etc. three highrises down from fest for 99 a night. now that is just me and her so that is 150 a piece for the 3 nights. but 2 bedrooms are more common to rent so divided by 4 or more that is cheap.
thats just me though. ive done enough camping shows. rvs at bonnaroo and condos everywhere else from vrbo.com.
but man, its on the beach. do some research and score a killer place at great rates right by the hangout. show your friends some rates on 3 br condos divided by six of ya. thats pretty convincing
I'd also assume that MMJ plays on Friday since the Lips are playing Saturday and Black Keys are playing Sunday. These will be the bands that close out the 2nd stage before the headliner or play before the headliner.

Yeah, I bet you're right. Those will be the ones closing out the 2nd stage from like 7-9pm or so. If that is the case, I'm gonna have to make a mad dash from MMJ to WSP on Friday...
Speaking of which, I hope they put in some sort of walkway on the ocean side of the beach this year between the 2 main stages. Walking from one end of that place to the other in the soft sand wears you out pretty quickly. It would also relieve alot of the congestion on the inland boardwalk.
Not sure about another walkway on the beachside, but there will be a lot more amenities this year than last. And for those of you bringing kids, there will be a full-blown kids stage this year during the day with activities....the director of the kid's stage at Lolla is doing it for Hangout this year So...should be awesome
And adds by the end of the month...at least a couple that are "very familiar" names and a few that will be "out there" according to my VERY reliable source! ;D

New additions by the end of the month? Time to blindly speculate about which bands will be added.
Janelle Monae plays in Montgomery, AL on 5/20, then she has an open date after that. Seems possible? Only problem is that she is playing Canada on 5/22.
Of Montreal ends their tour in Atlanta on 5/20, with no dates scheduled after that. The drive down from Atlanta isn't bad.
Okkervil River has an album coming out in May, so they will probably be announcing a tour fairly soon. I'm hoping they get added, and they would definitely fit in with the current lineup.
The only real read I could get on the possible adds, other than the assurance that at least a few of the adds would definitely be "known and familiar names to most people" which implied at least a couple of major 2nd tier acts still to come. As for the out there/unexpected/surprising acts there were hints that at least some of them would not be US-based acts and would little or lesser know US acts but more international acts...probably better known outside the US and just starting to gain a US presence and audience which is really exciting for me personally. I like that they are trying to bring in more World Music acts and introduce them to the US audiences. I think that this type festival is exactly the right vehicle for that sort of thing. So...stayed tuned...we could be in for some real unexpected gems!

More international acts would be great. I was hoping Cut Copy or Tame Impala might be added, but it looks like they will both be wrapping their North American tours up before then.
I've already bought my ticket and am very pleased with the lineup so far, but most of the acts I'm excited for are in the top tiers. If it isn't already obvious from my posts, I'm of the indie persuasion, so I'd love for the undercard to be filled out with a few more indie bands.
I just bought that Tame Impala album a couple of weeks ago on a whim. Pretty cool stuff.
I'd love to see Deer Tick added. I've been getting way into them lately. Or that new group, "Middle Brother" with guys from Deer Tick, Dawes, and Delta Spirit - I've been meaning to listen to that album but haven't yet. Or, for that matter, Delta Spirit would also be a killer addition. Can't wait to see who the additions are...
I think me and the boy are doing Hangout instead of Bonnaroo this year. We're trying to get a group together for a condo but if it ends up just being us 2 we're going to camp at the state park... I'm going to make a reservation Tuesday, hopefully. All the condos I've seen are just not feasible, price-wise for only 2 people.
Has anyone made a reservation at the state park recently? Do you think it's likely they are sold out already?

Delta Spirit would be great, too, and they've definitely done their share of festivals in the past. I've also been meaning to check out Middle Brother, but haven't gotten around to it yet.
I'm heading down to the hang out with a group of about 20 friends (a good mix of festival veterans and rookies), and I am looking for information on late night activities. How do the on site late night show work? Do I need to buy tickets in advance? I've also heard there will be additional "unofficial" late night shows off site, can any speak any truth to this?

there is NO late night scene at the actual festival. it's like any other city fest where the music has to stop by a certain time(10 or 11pm). last year Keller did an aftershow at the actual bar called The Hangout, but other than that, there is no latenight associated with the festival. i'm not sure about the "unofficial" stuff.
if you're going with that many friends, make your own latenight at the beach

Can't wait to see everyone on the beach!!
Last year there were separately ticketed late shows in the hangout restaurant. Obviously those are limited to the number of people that can fit in the building. I did not go to any of them last year, so I can't tell you much more than that. Unless it's something I'm dying to see, I probably won't go to any this year either. Just hit it hard at the fest and then party with friends late at the condo.
As far as "unofficial" late nights. There will be bars open you can go to, but not really anything within walking distance - you would have to take a cab. The flora-bama will definitely have live music, but it won't be anything associated with the fest - just typical beach bands.

I sent in my Work Exchange Team application last night and tried to reserve a campsite at Gulf State Park, but the reservation desk was closed for the holiday, so I'll try again in the morning. I'm hoping to make one long road trip out of Hangout > Wakarusa > Roo.
