How and where do you get into the "pit" at the what stage? I've seen people lined up for it before , but usually how long do you have to wait Or how do you start such a line? Are there Bonnaroo staff there to direct you?
I'm looking to get in close for The Dead Weather and am willing to dedicate 3-4 hours before the show for this. Thanks for the help...
i think there is some area off to the side you line up in and they move the people that were there out and let the lined up people in after each show... i could be wrong because i've never actually been in the pit for the what stage...
If looking at the stage from the soundboard, turn to your left and walk all the way over to the edge of the field. You'll see a metal rail fence and a few security guards. Just walk over and see if there is room in the pit. If so, they will let you walk right to the front. If not, they will make you wait until people leave the pit, which happens frequently in a festival setting. For headliners you usually need to queue up early, for Phish I think people were waiting for several hours prior to the show. They clear the pit after every set, so you cannot just camp in the pit area.
Wilco from the pit was awesome last year, no wait required.

If you're facing the stage then you line up on the left side of it. Just walk up all the way to the wall on the left and there will be staff people there organizing the line. surprisingly, you don't really have to get there too early for non-headliners (at least this has been true for when i've lined up) since they empty it out before every show so if you get there towards the beginning/middle of Jimmy Cliff's set then you should be fine

Not really, maybe a little. If its an act you really want to see then you should get there a little early to avoid having to wait during the show. It seems like during the day it is more likely that you just go on in, but for the headliners you are going to have to wait for a bit.

You can partially see the stage depending on how far back the line goes from the pit entrance. There is an entrance to the pit on both sides. You should be able to get into the pit for any nonheadliner act if you are there 10 to 15 minutes early for the show. However, some shows you will most likely be able to walk in and out of the pit with ease. The First act or two on What you can show up any time and get in the pit, examples are big sams funky nation, Jimmy Cliff, John Butler Trio, Damien Marlaey and Nas to name a few that will probably be easy in and out. For the preheadliners you can probably get in if you are early to the show, but if you want to be on the rail you will need to get there an hour or earlier. For headliners you can usually get in the pit if you are 20 to 30 minutes early to the show, but if you want to get on the rail you will need to wait pretty much all day.

based on inforoo it should be easy to get pit for dmb... which would be at least 250$ tickets for any regular dave fan at a show.... although I bet it ends up being much tougher than that. I'll probly check it out for the first time an hour before just to see... that would be much better than some of the other waits I've gone through

I would like to get a rail spot. I might just go before Jimmy clif and eat and drink a lot while waiting. I have a huge crush on Allison Moshart so It will be worth it.

I was planning on doing this before I saw the Avetts playing right before the Dead Weather. I may still try to leave early and get in. I have no idea how long the wait will be for DW. I walked right into the pit during the Raconteurs in 08, maybe I can pull that again.

yeah the only band I can see myself wanting to get into the pit for this year is Dead Weather, and possibly DMB if the lineup to get in for them is short (<30 mins)
Anyone have any guesses as to when would be a good time to show up to get in the pit for Dead Weather/DMB?
For headliners you can usually get in the pit if you are 20 to 30 minutes early to the show
Not in my experience. 2008 I was in the pit for B.B. King (just walked right in) and as soon as the show ended I got in line for the pit for Pearl Jam. There was over a 3 hour gap in between B.B. and PJ where Jack Johnson played, and I was literally the LAST person they let into the pit. Surely, PJ is one of the best headliners in roo history but if you want to be sure you get in check out the line much earlier in the day to get an idea.
But yes, earlier in the day you can get in much easier (I have done this for B.B. King and Rod y Gab). I also suggest going to the side farther from centeroo, as many people won't bother walking all the way around the crowd to get there. Even if you don't want pit, I feel like the far side (left if you are looking at the stage) is less crowded, just look at this picture here for proof ruralminority.com/trm/wp-content/uploads/2010/02/bonnaroo_aerial_1280x1024.jpg
Totally agree with you about the left side being less crowded. As for the pit, It depends on the headliner, but last year a guy in my group got into the pit for both Bruce and Phish (Sun) w/o waiting more than 45 minutes (he didnt push his way to the front either). I would guess KOL and DMB pit will be relatively easy to get into the pit for. Stevie is a toss up, but I will be getting in line for him during the Dead Weather since I want to see them anyway. I could be way off we'll see.
Getting there early is a good idea. I was front and center for the Beastie Boys and I got there for the last 2 Al Green songs. There is no "official" line until the previous act ends. After the act before ends, the security guards set up a temporary fence to form a line. So get there early and SQUEEZE TOWARD THE WALL! If you get there 3 hours early and are too far from the wall when they set up the fence, tough shit you have to move to the back. That being said... if you get there only an hour early (when there's no official line) you just have to be near where the line will be and make sure you get inside the fence.
Every time I see this photo I think "somebody screwed up the schedule". They should have swapped the acts on the Which and What stages. Look at the mob to the left, lots of room on the right. I wonder if this was taken during the White Stripes set a few years ago.

Well, by looking at the picture, it says 2006 so I'm guessing that the pic was taken in 2006 or maybe 2005...? I think the White Stripes show you were referring to was in 2007, right? Anyway, I'll keep this short because I discussed it in great lengths on here after it happened, but my only comment is the pit "line" system sucks. I waited through Jack Johnson(ugh) in '08 to get into the pit for Pearl Jam, only to be shut out as the show started. I was two people behind the cutoff, and the "security" guy told us it was full and we should go find a spot. Later, I look over, and they are letting more people in!!! I hope they have fixed these problems by now!!

I'm gonna try and get in the right side. Jack White (when playing guitar) usually hangs out on the right side of the stage and Allison usually is all over the place. I'm Gonna check out norah jones for a bit then make my way over to the What Stage before Jimmy Cliff. If no one is waiting and the line has yet to be formed I am willing to dedicate the next 3 hrs in order to be the first person in line. Therefore I can guarantee a rail spot. If I get there first, how can I make myself be the official "Line Starter"? perhaps talking to the security and making sure they know that I am starting the pit line.
Is that too much? Probably Do I really like the Dead Weather? Yes Would I marry Allison in a second? definitely A bit obsessed? kinda Once in a Lifetime experience? Yes

I dunno about 3 hours, but ill definitely try and pit for the dead weather. That sounds awesome. And I remember Jack being on stage right when he picked up the guitar which would be our left? I could be wrong
I've only been to roo the last two years but have been in the pit numerous times with relative ease. During the day usually can walk right in at any time, also lined up right before opposed bigger bands also with little effort, however if you want to get really close you might want to camp out by the wall as suggested. The left side is definitely easier, got in for Beasties, Metallica, and Pearl Jam on that side. As far as BNA's only one I waited any amount of time, half hour or so, was PJ that being said I was towards the back of pit for all three. So if you just want in it's pretty easy. I might have to camp out for Tenacious D this year to get a better spot, but will be in pit towards back for Dead Weather and Jay Z. See ya all in two weeks...

sounds good to me.... who's coming with me?
Right there with ya my friend....this is also pretty much my exact plan, so see ya there! And I'm pretty sure last summer when I saw them in Columbus that Jack played guitar more on the left side/middle of the stage (if facing the stage). But they may change things up this time around....might be a good idea to youtube coachella or other more recent shows.

haha dudeee I also went to the Columbus show last summer! I showed up like 4-5 hours before and was 9th in line. I got near the right side of the stage but on the rail. Jack did kinda play near the right/center, but hell even if he doesn't we will have the best seats on the farm.
We should meet up and camp out together. I will stick to the plan and make it there right before Jimmy Cliff goes on. I will probably be wearing a orange running singlet that says "Burg". I shall bring cliff bars and water.
pit=pwn but remember if you dont get into the pit for the act you were hoping for you can still get front(ish) andcenter by getting just behind the pit. It' only about a 20 yard difference so smile and enjoy.

Dude, your avatar is insane....
That is insane. I can't tell what animals they are. I only see something get ripped in half, try to swim away, then get ripped in half again. Brutal.
