Lamarcus Aldridge had shoulder surgery and won't be playing in Orlando lol.
I'm genuinely curious to see what the ratings are like for the regular season. People are starved for games, but after some of these throw-in teams lose a couple games and get eliminated I wonder if people don't just check out til the playoffs.

Seems like the throw in teams mostly got sidelined. Where the Pelicans got fucked is after playing one of the NBA’s Toughest schedules we had finally worked our way to the easy part of our schedule which I think was second easiest. Jizzlies meanwhile had a very tough schedule including 2 vs us and only leading Portland and us by 3 1/2. I don’t mind us being a sacrificial lamb at 8 because we need that experience. I’m also glad we get a few more games because that’s what the people want.
3.5 games with 17 left is a pretty big lead. It's not by any means insurmountable, but it is substantial, and they're clearly not the only team in that position, either. The fact that being ninth within four games grants a play-in opportunity means that even if the Pelicans don't gain anything on them in those eight games but outperform the Blazers, Kings, and the now Aldridge-less Spurs (I don't think the Suns have a chance or should be there), they still get their shot at the Grizzlies. That's a pretty beneficial put-up or shut-up scenario for them. They've been given plenty of opportunity. Odds are they won't do as well as at least one of those teams and it's moot. Kevin Pelton on the Lowe Post gave those four teams about a ten-percent chance each of making the playoffs.
Ratings will probably be great, especially for the first couple of games back. Some of these teams are going to be mathematically eliminated almost on the spot, though. The Suns and Wizards basically need to go 7-1 or win out to get their play-in chance, and they're bad teams that probably at-best go .500. One or two of the West teams that are all bunched up will probably be in a similar situation very quickly also. I'm mostly interested in seeing what kind of dip in attention takes place once that sort of stuff nearly-inevitably happens, with the playoffs right around the corner. The ratings will probably be good, great for what their matchups are in some cases. I'm just a little skeptical they'll be as gangbusters as is being predicted.
How many people are watching KBO really? I know some pretty huge baseball nerds and I don't think they're actually watching those games. Gambling on them, absolutely. Games are in the wee hours of the night, though, so it's not really fair for me to use that as any sort of point.

It might be substantial, but we had the opportunity to play them twice. We are better than them holding the 2-0, series-season lead after victories of 126-116 and 139-111. They don't have the answers for us or certainly haven't so far.
Alternatively, despite the 3.5 game deficit, 538 (regular, haven't looked at ELO since COVID-19) still had us at 60% to make the playoffs. Grizzlies were at 19%, Kings at 9% and Blazers at 14%. Spurs were at 2%.
You can look at the remaining schedules between us and Memphis. Outside of the two games we had against each other, we played:

I like our chances, though there was certainly no guarantee.
You make a good argument, and the league must agree, because they're bending over backwards to give a sub-500 team a chance to make the playoffs in the middle of a pandemic. Not something I would prioritize, but if there's a dollar to be made getting Zion in there, the league will do its best to make it.
Yeah for sure. But give the people what they want too. We had a tough start without Zion and and a tough little run when Favors was out due to injuries and the unfortunate death of his mom. We know we aren’t top tier overall but we certainly are the funnest young team in the league to watch. Between the hopeful MIP award winner Ingram to Zion to the emergence of Ball becoming a floor leader, Jrue, JJ, fucking Hayes and shit, we will bring some shit. I just appreciate the opportunity for us to compete at a level above what we are. I feel like I want the young guys to get that experience as we work our way up the ladder. We have a lot of assets, one of the most diverse and talented front offices and a real chance to make a run with some good picks, signings and player development.
I’ll talk shit and defend us all day, but you want to be realistic about the fact that we are an 8-9 seed. We are capabale of better with this roster as it is, but this is where we are.
So.. anyone care that around a sixth of players, and what Woj says is a "growing number", are discussing amongst themselves not participating in the resumption of the season or want quarantine measures loosened? Seems like kind of an issue.

no not really.
Do you just not care what players think or don't think it could lead to this all falling apart or a little bit of both?

I just don’t think it’ll be an issue when it comes down to it and people look at the money on the line. I could see teams like Phoenix not wanting to do it when they have basically no chance of getting into the playoffs. So maybe it’ll be less teams when it comes down to it.

I agree that that is the most likely scenario, that players on these non-playoff teams are going to be the primary ones dropping out, if not ultimately entire teams. We already saw LMA maybe pull a Pippen and check himself out by having surgery, which crushes almost any hope the Spurs had of making the eight seed. So, I think it's pretty likely that the format will have to be restructured. I think it's a very fluid situation that is going to be interesting to see develop.
It seems like the NBA didn't consult with the PA in a real way when developing this plan, because players (for example Carmelo said some stuff about this) still don't have all the details and some are openly questioning the plan. This is even before a likely spike in COVID cases that will almost certainly happen in the next few weeks.
