Having a great light show sure doesn't hurt but the thinking is that they'll be pre headliners like the Raconteurs were in 08, playing before the unopposed Radiohead, which would most likely be Green Day in this case.
Phoenix really doesn't have that much of a light show.
And if they were going to be in the Raconteurs spot it would be before the unopposed Soundgarden since they're first on the lineup.

I've never seen Phoenix. They claimed in an interview that they had an amazing light show.
Oh wow, I just saw this lineup game. That's really surprising that Green Day isn't listed first seeing as how they're much bigger than Soundgarden. Then again I'm sure Perry likes Soundgarden much better.

WOW, Perry's is fucking awesome this year! Actually this whole lineup is really solid as always. I'm definitely going. The only thing that sucks is I actually want to check out all of the headliners so I'll obviously miss a few. My priorities go Soundgarden, Arcade Fire, The Strokes, Lady Gaga, Green Day, Phoenix. Soundgarden and Arcade Fire better not conflict.
Yea I couldn't believe it when I saw Soundgarden first, Green Day is huge.
The reunion is huger.
That is an extremely stupid thought. Before I start, don't say album sales don't matter because they're actually pretty much the only solid gauge as to what is "huger" in terms of lineup placement. A quick wiki count shows Soundgarden went platinum 14 times, Green Day about 57. Haha, absolutely no comparison. Dookie went Diamond in both the US and Canada. American Idiot also sold insanely well. Nothing Soundgarden did ever came anywhere close, not to mention Green Day has been releasing albums consistently since the 90's and haven't ever decreased in popularity. This is an over 5 -1 shutout game here you just lost, congrats.
You must be completely obvlivious to not realize that kids these days love them, usually moreso than the people in their twenties who listened to them in the 90's. Kids these days don't give a flying quack about Soundgarden. The numbers show, you're totally quacking wrong.
Oh and you know it won't be one of their only few shows back.
And secondly, Soundgarden is first. You may disagree with that, but that's how Lollapalooza listed it. Agreeing with them doesn't make someone a fool.
I don't disagree with that at all. I love Soundgarden. That's why I listed them as my #1 priority. Green Day is ridiculously "huger" and Soundgarden listed before them came as a huge shock to the non-morons. I forgot we all have to be best friends on this board and we can't point out when somebody is completely wrong.

If anybody knows of another discrepancy with album sales vs. lineup placement anywhere close to as big as this, please speak up. KOL before Jay-Z is pretty big but nothing close to this. Higher album sales = higher lineup placement is something that holds true about 99% of the time.

Oh and you know it won't be one of their only few shows back.
1. You're precious.
2. Lolla will always recognize the "legacy act" with overall headlining status. You make a nice little argument about record sales, but clearly that's not the only factor at play since Lolla put Soundgarden in the top spot over Green Day. Hey, I don't make the rules.
3. Regardless of whether it's Soundgarden's first show back (and I'm sure there will be a warmup show somewhere before Lolla) the reunion of one of the original Lollapalooza headliners after 12 years is a huuuuge deal for the brand. Kids these days love Gaga (and she's selling a hell of a lot more tickets than Green Day) but she ain't headlining either.
I've had some amazing times at Lollapalooza. Saw some bands I thought I would never see live (Daft Punk 07/Radiohead and Rage Against the Machine in 08), I didn't go in 09 but that lineup is calling my name this year. How big was Perry's Stage last year?
I was considering going as I actually like alot of the undercard but it looks like Arcade Fire and Soundgarden are both headlining Sunday and those were the two headliners that I actually wanted to see. I have absolutley no interest in any of the other headliners. If Arcade Fire and Soundgarden were playing different days I would probably be there but as it stands now I will be missing Lolla for the second year in a row.
-When I Hear My Name -Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground -Blue Orchid -Passive Manipulation -Red Rain -Death Letter -My Doorbell -Hotel Yorba -Same Boy You've Always Known -Lovesick -Little Ghost -We're Going to Be Friends -The Hardest Button to Button -Black Math -The Nurse -I Just Don't Know What to Do With Myself
Encore: -Ball and Biscuit -Seven Nation Army -Screwdriver
Yeah thats the thing I dont want to choose between Soundgarden and Arcade Fire, I want to see them both. Im sure Arcade Fire would be better live but Ive been a Soundgarden fan since I was a kid so I definitley want to see them as well. I just dont get why they would put them against eachother, so dumb. I guess I will just wait til both bands release more dates and hope they come to Ohio.
2/5- Papadosio 3/3- MUSE 3/12- John Mayer 3/19- The Werks 3/31- Passion Pit 4/18- Ben Folds 4/20- Against Me! 6/10- Bonnaroo 6/30- Eric Clapton and Roger Daltrey

dawnofman, I'm in the same position; live in ohio, been a soundgarden fan since I was a kid, and really want to see arcade fire too. I wouldn't count on either of them coming to Ohio. It'd be nice if they both did but I wouldn't count on it. Even though soundgarden is heavier, I think them and arcade fire share many fans and this would be a massive mistake on lolla's part to have them on the same night.

Empire of the Sun?!?! What is up with that? 1) Lolla gets their first US show and 2) it's at Perry's little EDM corner? That's definitely the biggest shock of this lineup.
