Has anyone attempted to take the back roads into Roo? I plan on exiting the Interstate in Murfeesboro and heading through McMinnville, then south into Manchester. I have several small back roads scouted out that will take me to the Bushy Branch Road entrance. I have friends who say they have done this for years and have never sat in traffic more than a half hour. Is taking the back roads worth the hassle?
I did this last year. We got off 24 an exit or two after Murfreesboro, Beechgrove, I think, and headed in to Manchester on hwy 41 (or hwy 2, depending on the map you're looking at). We didn't hit any traffic at all until we got into Manchester, on the road leading to the entrance to the Farm. We got in line on that road and was inside in about 45 minutes. We will definitely be doing this again for 09.

Last year I was in VIP and came from Tullohoma(sp) and did not have any belay until we really turn past the car dealership. Then it was slow, but not hours.

Last year i think i went back roads... maybe this will ring a bell for other people.... it was only like an hour or 2 tops wait in line... I started at the walmart, took a left out of the parking lot and went over the interstate.... continued straight for a few minutes and then took a right (i think it was at a stop light)... followed some roads and went back over the interstate... about a minute later i was in line for bonnaroo...
Ive got news for you, every year the police get more and more agressive about stopping out of towners on the back roads. Depending on when you head in, you may be turned around and directed back to one of the main entrances, if that happens, you will be in line a LONG time!!

Do they count you as out of towners if you have Davidson County plates? I hope not because I was hoping to try the back roads from Nashville.
Well I hope they don't screw with me, I'm staying at a friends house (actually on the outlined route above) with Alabama plates.. Maybe I need to borrow his, haha.
How much directing of traffic do they do if you're coming in on Route 55? I saw a few interesting roads on a map, and I was wondering if they block any of the local roads off.
After thursday morning, you wont be able to use the road that on that map. They shut it down to all traffic except the people who live on that road.
There will be police posted at the corner and they will not allow access to Bushy Branch from it. Those who have success using it in the past, I am surprised, as we have even been turned around on it, after showing our Manchester address on my drivers license.
I've taken the back roads of I-24, I believe we took Hillsboro Blvd. and looped around the back on Asbury Rd., Clifton Scott Rd. and then Cornelison. Then we took Bushy Branch to the backside of Roo. We've always gotten there around 4 or 5 on Thursday and waited in line for about 2 hours. The main entrances were completely backed up at that point though, so I really think it saved us time.
That said, it pretty much guarantees you BFE. I wouldn't recommend it unless you really hate waiting in line. I'm going to arrive earlier this year and wait in the main line. Hopefully it will turn out better.
I like catching Hwy 64 in Fayetteville then going threw Lynchburg the home of Jack Daniels. This will take you to Tullahoma the home of George Dickel. then the roo is just around the corner. I've taken several different route my past 6 time and this has been the better.

This is true as of last year when I got there Thursday afternoon. I walked in using the route you mentioned. There was a road block up ahead with a cop there. He didn't care about me walking by, but he wasn't letting vehicles through.

I took this route last year and it was downright spooky! My bone headed ex (still not bitter) has a sister that lives about 45 minutes from the farm. Her husband gave us a map that took us in this way. We passed the line of traffic into Roo at least four times and we were getting worried we were either on the wrong road or about to be turned back by cops.
We got in line at the last possible intersection before the toll booth. The only problem we had was no one wanted to let us in line.
I finally traded my map and a beer for a line cut.

not only that but id much rather get pulled over by tha cops on a busy ass hwy then on some deserted back roda! trust me....we tried tha back road nuts one yaer for acl and got hassled and abused horrably by some scary bubba motherquackers!
edit: as yallz might know im not much of a editer but heres one of my old posts that describe our "back road' trip to acl...
"back in '07 the clan tried to do acl but as soon as we hit the state line we were targeted by the 5-0! we got pulled over 5 TIMES before we even hit austin and each time we were harassed insulted and threatened by them good ol boys! they never found anything cause we are'nt stupid and know how rednecks think of dreads and tats and piercings and the like but still held us "detained" for over half hour each time! they was obviously trying to insult and degraed us into provoking some backwoods texas asskickin or somethin! 1 bubba fuckface even spat in liz's lap after tellin her that it was ilegal to have a different color hair than in your license picture! WTF!!!!! finaly in san marcos they decided to "test" the ashes in her ashtray and said it came up posative for illict substances which is bs cause we made a point to clean out ashtray before we even left home! they arrested her and imponded her van! they held her overnight while we teh rest of spent the night at the scariest norman bates type hotel in all of assbackwards texas.......then they just released her without charge!!! but they still made us pay the inpound fee and a fine for "disorderly conduct"!!!! they even told her that they would be looking for our van on for the next few days cause they new we were "criminals"! needless to say we got the quack out of that pissbucket excuse for a state immediately! who knows what was gonna happen next time they stopped us!"
i know that was texas and all...but country back roads are country back roadws! just somethin to think ab0ut!

Gee! Who would have thought that a van full of face-pierced, tattooed, dreads (with 43 GD/counter-culture bumper stickers?) would have had a rough time driving through the backroads of Texas?

San Marcos isn't a backwater town, it's a college town full of hippies and all sorts of counterculture types. I've never had the first problem with any cops in the hill country. Salamander, you or someone in your clan must have done something really stupid to piss them off. You might want to be aware of something that would normally be pretty obvious to most people- Texans are very proud of their state and culture. If you trash-talk Texas to a normal Texan, you can pretty much expect an ass whoopin. If you're stupid enough to broadcast your whiny attitude to a COP, I have no pity for what happened to you. Also, San Marcos is about a 40 min. drive south of Austin. Did you miss the capital city or something?

just cause theres a college and a few guys with fauxhawks doesn't mean its noty a small town homie! and no...no one in the carwas stupi9d enough to mouth off to a fucking cop or offer up a...at that time nonexiostent... negative opinon of texas, texans or there over inflated semse of selfworth! and you right....san marcos is about half an hour from austin but as i thought the name of this thraed indicates....we weree taking going outta our way...you know, backroads... in an affort to skirt the cop congestion on the more direct routes!
Sorry sal, but what you are saying is stupid. ACL is in a huge park in the middle of a capitol city.....there are no backroads to it.
first...we we were taking backroads to austin, tx from tennessee....and trust me there are many of them! second...every city...capital or not...has backroads leading in to it....saying other wise is just palin stupid!
