It just makes sense to me. Perhaps these tough economic times will finally make legalization possible. Nothing else is working, so why not give it a shot, I say.

Something like that will face massive opposition, but would be a massive cash crop for sure. I am positive if it did, however, that all kinds of restrictions monitoring and such will take place. It would be like alcohol times 100.

There have been tons and tons of articles on digg about this. Biden is a huge opponent of legalization, and Obama said he won't legalize it, but he wants to decriminalize it. I think Minnesota just passed a decriminalizing bill yesterday.
Obama just chose a drug czar, I think he is chief of police for Seattle. The drug czar's son got in trouble for drugs too. That's kind of interesting... regardless, it is getting to the time when legalization is possible. Some people closer to Obama who are for legalization said that it could possibly happen in his second term, if he is re-elected.

legalize hemp to for quacks sake, you cant even get high from it
seriously. there isn't even a good reason not to.
You know those third-party issue ads that air during election season? I have one in my head that goes like this:
George Washington sits in a dimly-lit, simple room. He dips his quill in ink and puts his pen to paper. As he writes, his voice-over narrates what he's writing. It's a quote from his diaries regarding separating male and female hemp seeds. The camera zooms out. It is revealed that Washington is sitting in a prison cell. Fade to black, new voice-over tells the viewer that current U.S. law would do what they've just seen... use the last few of those 15 seconds to tailor it to the sponsoring organization and/or cause, and I think it would be a rather effective public relations tool.

The government would make/save so much money doing this, it's rridiculous. They could tax it at 100% and we'd still be getting it cheaper than we do now. All the people making money selling it would now have to pay income taxes on it.
There would be significant decreases in spending on police, courts, and jail.
This is probably going to happen in California. And everywhere else will follow eventually (Massachusetts next!). The baby boomers are getting old. Once they're the oldest generation and the WWII generation has passed, there won't be much opposition. The baby boomers were all hippies.

Obama's already said that he doesn't support legalization, so I really don't see this happening unless we get a democrat in office to follow him up in 2016. It's a massive step in the right direction ending the DEA raids on cannabis clubs and respecting the laws of the states with medical marijuana. I do think more and more states will start passing medical or decriminalization laws. We may see maurijuana moved from a Schedule 1 substance to something that allows research, but that most likely won't happen till Obama's second term becaues of the issue it would bring for reelection. From the polls I've seen support for legalization is somewhere in the 40% range. It's trending upwards, but still a minority issue. You can bet the tobacco, alcohol, and pharmacutical industries are going to fight this with all they've got.
Now would probably be the best time to finally leagalize it with the economy in the shitter, prisons overflowing, and the situation in MExico, but I really don't think it 's politically possible at this point. It is nice to see this getting a lot of press lately, and hopefully this will continue to change the minds of the voters into supporting it.

There is no federal law prohibiting this. It falls under state's rights, so each state can do what they want. Soon as state borders are crossed it becomes interstate commerce and the feds can jump in. But Obama couldn't legalize on the national level even if he wanted to
Obama's drug czar does want to cut the DEA back on busting medical places that are in states that approve medical use. Right now the DEA can and does go in and bust places even if the state has legalized it for medical use. His czar has also, while in Seattle, made mar!juana the low priority. Remember sometimes its baby steps.....

No, the DEA under the Bush admin and held up by federal courts have went in and busted medial places against states rights.

Well we've had people geting busted for drugs, tried, and sent to prison at the federal level under the Controlled Substances Act for quite some time now, so it is definately illegal under federal law. Just ask the poor people the med shops that keep getting raided, and those sales don't cross state lines. I agree with you that these laws are unconstitutional, but the Constitution doesn't seem to matter when it comes to the war on drugs. While passing a law strictly legalizeing marijuana would have the same constitutional questions over state's rights, something at the federal level can and must be done to change what we have now.
BTW, I wasn't tryihng to make a comment on overall job Obama's doing to qualify him for reelection in 2012 (he's less than 2 months in FFS), but that if a Republican does win in 2012 or even 2016 that the progress on ending the drug war will likely be stopped and maybe thrown in reverse.
I am a A & D counselor and made a comment while I was giving a presentation at a conference. The conferences topic I was presenting was regards to the failure of government to recognize treatment for addicts. The comment I made was off handed remark on the lines of if they legalized mar!juana and put a treatment tax on it like some places do gambling we could be have unlimited funding. I literally got booed. Which is funny because my profession does take money from gambling to fund gambling treatment but that seem to be against the grain somehow.
Although that remark was just off hand I have given considerable thought and do support this as a way to fund treatment centers. I know we are fighting for funding that if we had we could take in more people.

Obama said he stop those raids. I'm not saying they didn't happen. Just that they're not constituional.

That is one of the agenda's for Obama. Like many other things it is more then just an order it is rewriting policy. He got crap for appointing a drug Czar that has a son with a drug problem and conviction.
Yes I agree they are unconstitutional I know it hard to believe that George Bush would do anything unconstitutional and overstep his powers.
unless we get a democrat in office to follow him up in 2016.
Because he's doing such a bang up job so far that he'll definitely get elected in 2012.
How long has he been in office? Oh, yeah... a little over 50 days. What did you expect to happen when he got into office, that the economy would be fixed in a week?
I don't like all of Obama's policies, and I'm definitely not an Obama-maniac at all, but you have to understand everything takes time. Nothing is going to be fixed immediately... but that is what America expects, because a fair portion aren't educated in the field of politics.

Well so far all the headlines I've read regarding him go along the lines of "Obama elects _______ to new position" or "Obama signs legislation to ________" or "Obama proposes new bill to Congress to help small business" or "Obama looks to restore faith in economy's future"
The headlines of the last couple years have gone along the lines of "Bush to head to Texas ranch for a week" or "Lowest approval rating in decades!" or "Bush has shoe thrown at him"

I was shocked to learn a couple days ago that Iowa is considering a medical use law. I doubt it will pass this session, but it gives me hope for the future.
