Hopped on a scale at a ski rental joint last weekend and almost had a heart attack when it read over 20 lbs more than I’m used to. I’m not one to worry about the number on the scale as an indicator of my overall health, but when I checked in at the gym Tuesday and it read my usual 210 it was such a relief 😅 6’6 for reference so my main goal before the summer is to lose a little bit of midsection fat and increase my cardio levels. Here’s to another week of small improvements for all of us!

I gained back 4lbs because I haven’t been going to the gym or eating right for a few weeks. Pretty destined to be fluffy at this point I guess. Oh well. At least I’m soft and snuggly.
We're all a mess of paradoxes. Believing in things we know can't be true. We walk around carrying feelings too complicated and contradictory to express. But when it all becomes too big, and words aren't enough to help get it all out, there's always music.

One of the things that sucks about middle age is how quickly you lose things it took time to gain. I was feeling kind of off last week, so I gave myself a week with no exercise, including my usual 2x/week yoga. Instead of feeling rested at the end of that time, I felt stiff and weirdly tired.
Back at this week, and already feeling better after two days. Sam Yo has been kicking my ass on the Peloton.
sam is great. he looks at you all friendly and you think it's going to be an easy time but then NO it isn't.
i've been doing a lot of leanne and ben rides lately. i think there is something deep in my blood that needs british people to tell me i'm doing a good job.
Ok, I'll join. 3 lbs down. 2 weeks in. 17 to go. Want some off before my bike ride in Germany. I'm counting on a cute German tell me I'm doing a good job.

Maybe it’s weird, but I kind of love that. I did a good hard seven weeks, and I’m taking this week off intentionally for a reset. I had to take a nap today because I was just worn out. It really makes me even more appreciative of how much better I feel when I’m working out.

When I worked with a trainer last year she had me do weeks that were like that - apparently tapering and mobility weeks are just as important as anything else. The issue is being able to get back to it the next week. That's why I was paying her!

I took a week off at Christmas, and I did not have any trouble getting back in the gym when the time came, so I’m hoping that it’s the same this time. I won’t say I’ve necessarily missed it this week, and I don’t feel bad about taking the rest, but I also really enjoy my workouts now, so I think I’ll be ready to get back at it on Monday.
I’ll be switching things up again then too. I’ve been doing four days of weights (upper/lower splits) and just trying to get some walking in. I’ve not really been doing any kind of cardio, but there are some heart issues in my family history, and I want to do another 5k sometime relatively soon, so I’m going to start doing two days of cardio (mostly running, weather permitting) and three days of weights (upper/lower/full) for a while.

Do you have access to a treadmill? The new fad is 12-3-30, where you walk a 3 speed, 12 incline (or less if you can’t go that high without holding onto the rails) for 30 minutes. It’s been a great way for me to get my heart rate up but not lose those BUTT GAINS

I’ve seen that talked about. I opted for a walking pad that fits under a desk, so it doesn’t incline.
i hit a really frustrating plateau in the last month or so, but got on the scale this morning and it's started moving again despite being less strict with myself. i have quite a ways to go, but am down almost 20lbs from my highest weight. in non scale victories, i'm now able to comfortably wear my wedding rings for the first time in probably 2 years. i actually caught a tear sliding them on and off today.

I've maintained what I'm doing but have maintained weight. Honestly probably the drinking. The cardio is definitely getting easier though, might add on some lifting at this point and see if that does anything. I've realized it's not the weight that bugs me, it was being unhealthy. Liking what I see in the mirror a lot more before this process, wish I'd taken before and after pics because I definitely think I look better even if my weight is the same

Well I’ve utterly failed at getting in shape for this Bonnaroo, to the point where I’m probably just not going to go because my fitness level won’t let me enjoy it properly (BMI is at 42 for context, yikes). Have made a lot of progress in career and mental health this year, so it’s not a wash, but I feel like physical fitness is the one thing truly holding me back from living the life I want, especially when it comes to travel/festivals, & dating. Really is the biggest roadblock in my life rn, because outside of obesity I think I’m a pretty well rounded person (poor word choice lol) and have some good stuff going for me.
Going to try to double down on my efforts and get fit for fest season 2024, though it’s more likely I’d do Primavera next year than Bonnaroo. Goal is to get myself to a healthy BMI by Memorial Day weekend next year, which I’ll accomplish if I lose about 2 lbs / week. Already got a killer IG caption thought up for taking a weight loss photo in Barcelona, so it’s time to make progress.

Glad to hear mentally you are doing good. I haven't made much progress either,
On the bright side, if you have a stable job, have hobbies, mentally healthy and dress/groom well the ladies (or men / or theys) will come my brotherrr.
Something that helps me is having a accountability partner / set timer on socials and spurge on some nice gym clothes and a nice gym if you got the money too.

. Yeah I definitely need someone to hold me accountable. The 4 people I’m closest with are all in even worse shape than me, so it’s like I’m fighting against the grain and it makes it way more difficult than it needs to be.

It's been an up and down journey this year with my fitness. I've taken care of a major surgery and a smaller one which has put me behind on my goals. Thankfully those are done with and I'm making the final push to get feeling right again. I'm mainly worried about my endurance and getting my back stronger. The hardest thing is getting myself in the swing of consistently hiking. I've been hitting the gym but I usually walk outdoors a lot more than my body has been wanting to. I'm glad to hear everyone working on goals regardless of where they are at in the process. Keep it up!!!

Need a brutally honest opinion on this. Would someone at my current size (5’8, 270 lbs if the bmi doesn’t contextualize it enough) be able to get good enjoyment out of a 5 day fest in the Tennessee heat? I’ve been going back and forth on whether I can physically handle Roo this year. Discussed it in therapy recently and was told that it seems like I’m using my lack of fitness as an excuse to avoid doing things that would enrich my life. Did Primavera at like 250 lbs and it was ok, but the weather in Barca is emasculate and I had a cool hostel room to sleep in every night. Did Roo 2019 at something like 220-240 and it was ok (though my feet kinda gave out by the headliners and I had to take a show to just sit down to get energy back). Any thoughts on this?
If I were to go, I think I’d use it as motivation to make some good strides on my fitness the next 40 days, hit the cardio hard to build up some stamina.

You have plenty of time to adjust to being on your feet for roo. Do you live somewhere hot already? That is my biggest battle anymore, living in PNW and coming to TN in June is a shock with the heat and humidity. That can impact things more than extra weight carrying around. Luckily I grew up in the desert and know how to hydrate and take the heat seriously. What I do leading up to Roo is try to get more sauna time in (through my gym, hopefully your gym has one or if you already live somewhere hot and humid just go outside) and just walking walking walking outside more than I usually do. Being on your feet will be rough regardless of weight. Also, hydration. The people who burn out at roo quickly tend to be the ones who underestimate their hydration. I also just pay more attention to what I'm eating and supplementing the week or two before hand, to make sure I'm going in the best I can nutritionally. So, if you come prepared for heat, hydrate, have some miles under your feet, and listen to your body, you will be fine. We all have aspirations to have what we think is a "perfect summer body" for roo or whatever summer plans, but most of us "fail." Don't let your image of perfect get int he way of doing things today. It does sound like you might be stuck in your head about this, and I think you should strongly consider going if this is what your heart desires. It might be the motivation/kick you need! You have ~5 weeks to prepare!

Appreciate the feedback! I think you’re right, it’ll be a great motivation to kick the diet and running efforts into high gear for 5 weeks, which is always the hardest part of a weight loss plan. Now to just figure out the logistics of getting there solo, I don’t want to a 9 hour solo drive again.

Well, you can rely on me to be brutal. And honest. In 5 weeks you can lose 10 pounds if you are really committed. Cut back on the salt, alcohol, and junk food. Cut what you eat by 1/4 to start. Supplement with lots of healthy fluids and a good MVI. Put on a backpack and get your ass out there and walk. Every day. Don't just do cardio. Through in some weights to build up strength also.
Don't let your weight restrict what you want to do and love. Get you butt in gear and go enjoy Bonnaroo.

appreciate your advice. I do remember the last time I actually dedicated a month of my life to trying to get fit (May 2020), I lost 17 lbs and went from struggling to run a mile to essentially running 5 miles daily. So you’re definitely right that it’s a lot of time to make some progress, I’ll get to work.
there's such a wide variety of instructors, there is a personality for everybody and for every mood. denis morton my main man for riding on the beat and his great musical taste and occasional jamband rides, ben aldis and leanne hainsby for when i need an attractive british person to encourage me (for some reason something in my soul responds well to british accents), jess king to go to church, EDM/house/techno playlists, and huge LGBT pride shout outs, matt wilpers for that grounded, friendly, but serious about training mentality, along with his charmingly terrible playlists (to be fair it's hard to make a good playlist for the extremely long rides he does), etc. and there are numerous instructors i haven't even tried with, and i've had the bike for 10 months.
music there is every genre. pop rides, decades rides, country rides, metal rides, techno rides, house rides, jamband rides, artist focus rides, sooo many different options. for some reason i thought the music would all be trash but the truth is a lot of the instructors clearly put a lot of thought into their playlists. it's exciting when a random song you haven't thought of in forever just pops up at a key point in the ride. a couple months ago during denis's jamband ride he dropped my second favorite phish song "col. forbin's ascent" which is a pretty fucking deep cut. my wife thought something terrible was happening because i was singing this ridiculous song at the top of my lungs, i was absolutely manic in the best way.
really it's just a shitload of fun. peloton isn't something i have to convince myself to do, it's something i look forward to doing.
LOL this is so true. Matt Wilpers has the best guided running classes too. Even if the playlists are mediocre.
Also I second everything you said in this post. Peloton really puts a focus into integrating the music so seamlessly with the workouts, which is obviously a big draw for me and probably anyone on this board. The fact that I can workout to LCD Soundsystem in a group class format is not something I would get anywhere else.
EDIT: TL,DR; The variety of class types plus variety in music selection = awesome workouts.
Was doing Matt Wilpers most recent 75 minute power zone endurance ride this weekend. An Imagine Dragons song starts playing, he looks around at the class and says "Man, Imagine Dragons has to be one of the greatest bands of all time right?"
I mean, that is one of the worst music takes I've ever heard. I laughed out loud when he said it. But I love him so much lmao.

So I've really kicked my ass into gear this month. I'm down 8 pounds and back to lifting five days a week. Running a 5k three days a week, might start waking up an hour earlier to make that a 5k five days a week along with the lifting. Diet plays a huge role, ended up buying those premixed salad packs and cooking a chicken breast and making that into lunch and dinner on weekdays. Enough variety there between different salads that I haven't gotten sick of it, possibly since I've let myself cut loose a little on the weekends with "cheat meals" that are still healthy- steak, potatoes, healthy greens. Charcuterie for lunch to keep the carbs down. Feeling really good about it.

Been on keto 25 days or so now. Been great, gone from a peak of about 280, down to about 268. Way less appetite in general, espescially those persistent carb/sugar cravings that have followed me my whole life. Haven’t even been exercising at all, but it’s a goal for July. I see this as being very sustainable, I’m still getting to eat some really awesome food.

stepped on the scale today, lost 10lbs on the gallstone diet lmao.
in the hospital i was either eating nothing or just liquids, since i've been out i haven't wanted to eat large portions, which is great. small meals fill me up. hoping this holds.
