I thought this would make for a interesting thread. I was thinking that now that we are three months into the new year, and there have been plenty of new albums released. What is your album of the year so far?
Think of it like this, if 2006 was over today, and you had to vote for just ONE, what album would you pick? Please only pick one, because that's the point of "album of the year", not albums. No cheaters, no "honorable mentions", just one, and a reason if you'd like.
Mine....The Flaming Lips - At War With The Mystics Reason......One listen is all you need to understand why.
Although I'm not sure exactly how I feel about it yet, it is a Ben Harper album and is definitely a big step up from the subpar Diamonds on the Inside.

sorry to be that guy ka mai, but the loon came out in late 2005. thought many folks (me included) didn't start getting into it until this year. it truly is top notch though.
for me it's:
quality tracks from start to finish, particularly "the first song" and "our swords"
I haven't listened to many albums released in 2006 but so far my choice is:
Umphrey's McGee - Safety In Numbers
I really like this album because it's completely different from the live experience. Shows that they don't just rely on blazing fast guitar work. The track with Joshua Redman is just sick too.

Egads! I am full of shame, because I'm usually "that guy". I thought The Loon was completed and obtainable in '05 but not "officially" released until '06, but I was wrong. Amended my post above to an actual '06 album.
two gallants- what the toll tells im not actually positive if it came out this year... but it hink it did..anyway i personallly heard it for the fist time a month ago...it is great stuff... it is kind of like bob dylan meets blind melon nico.... maybe thats a bad comparison but those are the bells that go off in my head...
it's a tough call for me because I'm really liking the new Ben Harper and Umphrey's but I think I'm gonna have to go with Josh Rouse - Subtitulo for my favorite so far this year, I'm hooked on it.
There are alot of good albums, already, this year. The Lips album is definately up there, but since someone already put it up, I'd have to go with.....
It's really really good. I mean all thier albums are good, but this one is growing on me more and more. I also like that Band of Horses cd as well. All good choices.
New Harper album has a lot of good tracks; but personally, I'd rather he cut out a couple of tracks and made it one CD. We know he can rock out and slow it down, no need to make the obvious distinction with two CDs. I had a similar problem with the Foo Fighters of last year (that album was a big "meh").
I just downloaded some leak action of the Raconteurs . . . I continue to love Jack White, the man rocks. Listened to it three times over now, and its great. Album of the year . . . Broken Boy Soldiers.

That Band of Horses disc is sick, sick, sick. I'm busy playing catch up from last year still, but, for my money, the Band of Horses stuff is great. Lots of music to come this year though, and I hear the new Islands disc is pretty good stuff. Pitchfork anyone?
The best album of the year has not even been officially released. 'Return to Cookie Mountain' by TV on the Radio qualifies as a major step up from their first full length and the most exciting thing I've heard so far this year.

I just downloaded it yesterday! Haven't listened to it yet....I really liked Desperate Youths anyway, so my expectations are pretty high.

DANBIRD - - - GREAT AVATAR!!! I am beyond obsessed with Lost (I've become like a trekkie or something) and I hate that bastard Henry... I'm so pissed there wasn't more interrogation during the last episode!!! GRRRRR

Man, the second song 'I was a lover' makes me want to take a chainsaw to my head....in a good way
I've heard the new leaked Pearl Jam and holy shit is it amazing. I hope to God that they get added to Bonnaroo. The new songs should be incredible live.

Alright, I went out and bought some stuff this weekend to get back into the mix.
I picked up At War With the Mystics and Both Sides of the Gun.
At War With the Mystics is interesting stuff, and maybe it will take me time to really get into it, but I think it's just a grade or two below their last few albums. Still great, but maybe not a "classic" Lips album.
Both Sides of the Gun, on the other hand, is OUTSTANDING. In my mind, the best album Harper has put out. I wasn't all that into Ben Harper before, but this album is really changing my mind about the guy. This is up there right now with Belle (below) and Band of Horses for the best of the year thus far. I love Belle, and while The Life Pursuit is up there on my list, If you're Feeling Sinister still remains my favorite disc of theirs.

Just bought the new Built To Spill album but have yet to listen to it. I really like the new Lips album and have been listening to the new Shooter Jennings alot as well.
but i have to say that my favorite so far hasn't been released yet, and that is Drive-By Truckers - A Blessing and a Curse. I listened to the stream yesterday and it is amazing.
