Went to all 3 of Empress Of's tour warm-ups at Elsewhere last weekend and had a great time all 3 nights. She played some medleys of her tracks and it worked really well; created a dancey/party environment. She has amazing energy, even when it was probably over 100 degrees in there the first night, and was dancing the whole time. She is also very funny (and sexy). Highly recommend seeing her on this tour, the bangers on the new album are a lot of fun live.
Shannon & the Clams was kind of disappointing last night but I might have just been tired so idk.

Had my first show experience at The Sphere last night with Dead and Company. Best music venue I've been to and it's not even close. We all know about the screen and I'll talk about that but first i want to talk about the sound.
for better or worse, i'm what you call an "audiophile". i've been obsessed with speakers, headphones, and related equipment and their impact on sound for almost two decades now. i've had the pleasure of owning lots of different kick ass speakers and headphones in my own home and have spent a lot of hours just sitting in front of my speakers (or before that sitting with my headphones) listening to music. also got my hearing checked last year and was delighted and surprised that i still have perfect hearing (thank you etymotic earplugs).
the sound in the sphere last night was audiophile quality sound. so i was way over in sec 211, which is hard right. my experience in other venues told me i'd probably be hearing echoes and reverb the like. but the sound where i was sitting was like i was sitting directly in the middle of my speakers at home. i could lock into any of the musicians and follow them, and their tone was absolutely perfect. no frequency was over or under emphasized. it was so weird and so awesome. and what was so strange about it was it wasn't loud, it was clear and coherent. a common trick of poorly designed speakers is to increase the volume of some frequency to make it sound more detailed, and that just naturally happens in most regular music venues because of the acoustics of the room, but none of that was happening at the sphere.
aside from that, the seats were firm but comfortable and not too cramped, and the venue staff were fantastic. they were friendly and helpful and were constantly making announcements, i.e. at setbreak they had people saying "hey everyone five minutes left in setbreak" which was nice.
all that to say that even without the screen, it's still the best venue i've ever been to.
but yeah the screen. the screen fucking rules. if you've seen any of the videos from the Dead and Company shows you've seen this, but early in set one the screen "opened up" to Haight Ashbury, everybody goes nuts, and then slowly the camera starts to rise and tip downward and it absolutely felt like the entire venue was tipping up on it's end and you were about to fall and everybody is screaming. it keeps going up until you are in outer space and it was fucking crazy. there was also plenty of nature scenes and cosmic psychedelic shit, and they did a great job of putting the band members up on various parts of the screen during solos etc. so you could see exactly what they were doing. so cool.
the screen shenanigans created a phenomenon where more people were sitting that at a typical show like this. most people were standing / dancing but also i didn't feel weird about sitting and just taking it all in. there was even a moment when there was this spinning disco ball effect where i almost had to sit down, it was a bit much. very cool just really intense.
musically it was a great night, the band was on point. i think lost a little steam after drums > space but still great. and drums > space was the best part of the night lol, this venue was made for this. they really played with the surround sound capabilities during this segment, big bass bombs pressurizing the room and drum sounds coming at me from 360 degrees, totally immersive.
also they opened with "Alabama Getaway" fuck yes. "It Hurts Me Too" was also huge for me. you can tell Mayer loves playing it. also if you start a band find a lead guitarist who looks at you the way Mayer looks at Chimenti.
no "The Other One" or "Cold Rain and Snow" last night but maybe this Thursday I'll get them.
anyway if you like the Dead even a tiny bit and can make it happen, catch one or more of these shows. or catch some other band you love there in the future. though somebody was saying they heard The Eagles were locked in for a residency which is gross.
If youre looking for a deal and a solid double bill then hit up the Sarah Mclachlan and Feist tour. Feist tore it up with a 45 min set and the crowd loved it cause she is so engaging. Sarah is performing Fumbling Towards Ectasy but was smart to play all the hits first and then the album. A nice 3 hours of for $10 wasnt a bad night out. ( had to pay for parking but thats still insane value on a $100 seat )

I saw Pixies, Modest Mouse, and Cat Power this evening.
I’m only vaguely familiar with Cat Power. She was kinda boring.
This was my third time seeing Modest Mouse. They’re fine. I’ve listened to their catalog quite a bit over the last 20 years, but they really only have a handful of songs that I love - that I truly think are great songs. They’ve played a couple of them each time I’ve seen them, but I’ve never seen them play my favorite couple, and tonight was no exception.
Pixies are obviously alt-rock legends, and this was somehow my first time seeing them. They sounded great, but for some reason, they ended at 10:30 without playing “Here Comes Your Man” or “Monkey Gone to Heaven”. WTF?!?!

Jacob Collier played our 4500 cap that has a GA floor and 2 balconies of seating. I was on the fence about going but esteban luckily coerced me from afar. The floor was very much not full but the balconies were pretty close to it, which says something about the target audience I guess.
I left Jacob's Roo '23 show about 10 minutes in. It just wasn't the vibe I was looking for. But seeing him and his band alone in a big room was a really really special experience. Each of his very talented band members gets to put their talents on display more than once. The set & lighting look great. Very creative with fake trees on stage (funnily enough knocked loose does this on this tour as well). He has a 1 of 1 built for him "harmonizer keyboard" that's basically a souped up vocoder. He does a solo cover of Bridge Over Troubled Water and I was fully transfixed the entire time. Brought me to tears. Anyway great show. Catch the tour if you can.
So cool nasti. Bonnaroo show ended up ruling but it was condensed into like 75 minutes. This tour is about 2 hours of blissful sounds and some of the best voices in the business. I agree with rooloo that I’ll catch him every time he comes through town or any festival. Top 1 show of 2023 and the current front runner for 2024 for me.

Knocked Loose/Show Me The Body/Loathe/Speed were all great last night. I also ran into Teddy Flair which was good times.
If you're at all into hardcore, I'd suggest checking out Speed. If last night was any indication, they're getting ready to blow up. Before their set, their merch guy was sitting in his chair playing on his phone. After, they were thirty people deep. I also had three different conversations with random people which amounted to, "Had you heard them before? Holy shit. They were great."

yeah Speed is gonna be a big deal real soon, debut album comes out in a couple weeks I think?

Like a lot of near-suburbs in the Boston area, my town has an annual porchfest where musicians of every level of experience perform on porches, sidewalks, in driveways, and on front lawns all over town. I last saw rocking alt-country singer/songwriter Sarah Borges nearly 20 years ago at a street fair, and can't believe that it took me that long to see her a second time last weekend. She's got an incredible voice and writes great melodies.
She tours nationally on the club level from time to time and if you'd go see Lucinda Williams and Steve Earle when they played locally, you'll likely enjoy Borges. (She's appearing on the next Outlaw Country Cruise with both of them and many others in 2025.)

Went to ODESZA very last minute last night and they were as good as always. I think this was the 4th time I've seen them on the tour and they kept it fresh each time. Going back and forth between headbangers/some DnB and really pretty strings sections is great. New mixes and version of Locomotion were fire.
made my first trip to the Bowery in NY on thursday for snacktime. theyre local to me and have been gaining steam for the past year since they started opening for Portugal the man. so cool to see the place close to sold out and the crowd going crazy. the sound in the venue was phenomenal too.
over the weekend saw Frank Turner for the first time in 4/5 years. last few albums didnt do anything for me and almost bailed on going but ended up being one of the best shows of the year for me. it was a nice reminder how much i connect to his catalog. they deviated from the set list with it being the last show and hit just about everything i wanted to hear.

Zach Bryan is the real deal. Went to Sunday of Buckeye Country Superfest and he put on an awesome show. His band was great, he seemed genuinely happy and grateful to be there, and the crowd was singing along to every word. His voice certainly can fill the stadium. Played all but one of my favorite songs of his. The best part of his show is definitely the Revival encore, but Dawns, 9 Ball, and Pink Skies were some other highlights. Also Billy Strings was of course amazing playing before him. I was taking a video while dancing and didn't realize until after that it ended up being 3 minutes long. Crowd was mostly ~18-21 year olds and pretty much what you expect for a country show and most people were sitting for Billy but he and his band did get a big standing ovation.
Saw Redd Kross last night for the first time in ages. They sounded great and seemed to be having a blast on stage. It's cool they're still going after 45 years.

Saw Beck perform with the LA Philharmonic Orchestra last night at the Hollywood Bowl. If you have a chance to check out one of these orchestral shows, do it! Lots of deep cuts and the orchestral arrangements of a mostly Sea Change and Morning Phase set list sounded great. It's rare that the Hollywood Bowl is quiet for a show but everyone was just so drawn into the music.
This was also in celebration of my 50th birthday so a group splurged on a garden box and it was well worth it!

I caught Hurray for the Riff Raff at the Woodward Theater in Cincinnati tonight. A+. The new album is great and the current touring band is solid. Check them out if they come through your town.

Went with my wife to Mates of State (one of her favorite bands from the 00s). Really cool show because they originally met in Lawrence KS in college (show was in KC) so there was a lot of family in attendance and a decent (and enthusiastic) crowd given their period of inactivity. Their kids ran the merch stand, a true Family Band.
They are releasing a new album soon and played the lyric video on a projector screen at the end of the set.
Did you see Gecs on their last tour and, if so, how did this compare?
nah, last time I saw Gecs was at Roo 2 years ago. idk if that counts as there last tour. Not really sure what was better both shows were pretty similar. Laura was pretty funny this time around

Whoa, I was under the impression that Mates of State had called it a day! This is very good to know, vibed with them a lot in college.
