Should be pretty good: Steely Dan, Allman Brothers Band, Derek Trucks Band, Gov't Mule, Social Distortion, North Mississippi Allstars, Wolfmother, Umphrey's McGee, Elvin Bishop, Guster, the Duhks, Keller Williams, John Butler Trio, Old Crow Medicine Show, Taj Mahal, and the "Killer" himself, Jerry Lee Lewis, among others.
Oh, and it's an outdoor venue by the Mississippi River a short walk from Beale Street. Various stages spread out. Lots of hotels in the area. Cheapest are out in Southaven, MS or West Memphis, AR both which are about a 15-30 minute drive (depending on traffic) from the festivites. And Beale Street is INSANE after the shows.
"White collar conservative flashin down the street, pointing that plastic finger at me, they all assume my kind will drop and die, but I'm gonna wave my freak flag high." Jimi Hendrix
Just got back earlier today. The Allmans were fantastic on Friday. NMAS and Mule were solid, but hell they only had little over an hour anyway. Jerry Lee Lewis was okay, but he left the stage halfway through his set because people we fighting (I didn't see anyone fighting though).....he did eventually come back and play.
The John Butler Trio played a great set on saturday and I caught a little bit of Taj Mahal, who was okay. I caught the very end of the Ohio Players and I'm pissed I didn't see all of their set because if they played the whole time like they did the last 15mins then that show was f**king nuts. Steely Dan played a good set, but I was so damn tired I left a little bit early. Beale St was packed the f**k out last night and I got entirely too hammered staying out there, but it was awesome being completely wasted and having the cops come up to you and tell you that you are way too fucked up then give you a high five.
I went on Friday. I honestly think this is the worst music festival I have ever been to. I remember going 10-12 years ago and thinking it was great. For a long time I felt like the festival was deteriorating, but this weekend I realized what has changed since then is that I am no longer in high school anymore, but the crowd still is. They target the high school crowd and oversell the hell out of it. And that is fun when you are in high school, but when you are my age, you want to chill out and relax a little. You want to hear the music and the bands, and not just be there to be there and get muddy. It's also just a terribly disorganized festival, imo. The lines for beer are ungodly long. The sound is ridiculously bad (couldn't hear mule at all, and we were fairly close), the layout is designed so that 2/3rds of the crowd is in one half of the park. That's not to mention that the Cops threw my friend on the ground and nearly arrested him for literally trying to ask hhe cop a question. It was ridiculous, I have never seen anything like that. HE didn't do ANYTHING wrong and got thrown on the ground like some criminal. I think the cops wised up and realized they had nothing to charge him with and let him go after chewing him out.
So after all that, I decided to skip out on saturday and sunday to go down to the lake instead. I would have liked to seen Wolfmother, John Butler and Umphrey's, but couldn't deal with the festival part of it for them. I'll wait for Bonnaroo for 2 of those 3.
It just makes me realize how incredibly lucky we are to have Bonnaroo. There is such a sharp contrast with design, layout, concept, crowd and execution between Bonnaroo and BSMF. There is really no comparison. Bonnaroo is the best festival in the land and BSMF, imo, is one of the worst. I hate saying this too, as it's my hometown festival, but I have come to this realization after all these years. There are so many things I would do to make it better, but alas, it's not my festival.
But, it wasn't all bad, I did get to see SOCIAL DISTORTION and they f'ing Killed it. Played all the classics plus their standard covers like Ring of Fire, Under my Thumb, and Hank William Sr.'s Six More Miles. Mike Ness has still got it after all these years.
That was the sickest set of the weekend, hands down.
we've seen wolfmother a couple of times now, only small clubs, and yes, they rocked the house down ... funny though, on the thread "band you are going to avoid at the roo" some people have put wolfmother ... to each his own eh .. cr*****
I didn't but one of the girls at work did. She said it was great. She described at Zeppelin/Sabbath/Floyd which is how I would describe them so I could tell she really got it. That was the only band I regret missing but I will see them at Bonnaroo.

It sounds like it is aimed at the same crowd as the Rites of Spring at Vanderbilt. I loved the show and the music, but was really annoyed by the crowd - and yes I am way older so I don't enjoy the college fratboy crowd I saw Wolfmother at that show and they are by far one of the best live bands I have seen in a long time.
