House #1 A 20 room mansion ( not including 8 bathrooms ) heated by natural gas. Add on a pool ( and a pool house) and a separate guest house, all heated by gas. In one month this residence consumes more energy than the average American household does in a y ear. The average bill for electricity and natural gas runs over $2400. In natural gas alone, this property consumes more than 20 times the national average for an American home. This house is not situated in a Northern or Midwester n "snow belt" area. It's in the South.
House #2 Designed by an architecture professor at a leading national university. This house incorporates every "green" feature current home construction can provide. The house is 4,000 square feet ( 4 bedrooms ) and is nestled on a high prairie in the American southwest. A central closet in the house holds geothermal heat-pumps drawing ground water through pipes sunk 300 feet into the ground. The water (usually 67 degrees F. ) heats the house in the winter and cools it in the summer. The system uses no fossil fuels such as oil or natural gas and it consumes one-quarter electricity required for a conventional heating/cooling system. Rainwater from the roof is collected and funneled into a 25,000 gallon underground cistern. Wastewater from showers, sinks and toilets goes into underground purifying tanks and then into the cistern. The collected water then irrigates the land surrounding the house. Surrounding flowers and shrubs native to the area enable the property to blend into the surrounding rural landscape.

I had heard a while back that Bush's ranch was off the grid and powered by alternative energy. I was surprised to say the least. Alternative energy is quite doable, and obviously Bush knows that. The thing is he still stands to make more money promoting oil and fossil fuels. The day Bush's portfolio is more Alt energy than petrolium is the day we will end out "addiction" to foreign money...er I mean oil.
and f**k that Al Gore guy. I never liked him anyway. And I still haven't forgiven Tipper for the PMRC.

Al and Tipper buy all kinds of "green credits", their home is also both of their offices. Add in W & Laura's offices see how it balances out. Then count in the other homes they have.
In fairness, Snopes has another article where Gore responded to issues relating to his homes energy usage, citing factors such as (1) his house is four times the size of the average house, and thus, consumes more energy, (2) the house is used both as his residence and as a business office for both him and his wife, (3) he pays an extra $432 per month to obtain some of the electricity from green sources such as solar and other renewable energy, and (4) they are in the process of installing solar panels, and (5) they try to use other energy effecient measures (such as compact fluorescent bulbs) in order to offset their energy uses.
So, while, yes, the above is essentially true, it is not necessarily the entire truth.

I did. I also noticed that most of the candidates for president are in the exact oppisite quadrent: Democrat and Republican. Just more proof we have a one-party system masquarading as a two-party system. I'm sure Gore would fall into that Right-Authoritarian block as well. we are truely governed by corperations for corperations. Most people who identify themselves as Republicans are like you Meg. We're notdifferent at all. It's ust the old Divide and Conquer technique. Pit us against each other even though it should be us against them.
And just to be clear my dislike for Al Gore has nothing to do with his house.

I'm still surprised so many of you think Republican is a bad word yet think Democrats are OK. If that political test prooved anything, it's that making a distinction between the two parties is meaningless. In the end, they stand for the same things, and its not what most Americans (regardless of party affiliation) stand for.

Gore recommends examining your 'carbon footprint' and reducing it as much as possible. That doesn't mean ditching civilization and living in a cave. Both houses have made environmentally friendly choices. Obviously, Bush's modern ranch (completed in 2000) is the hands-down winner when compared to Gore's mansion (purchased in 2002). However, Gore is trying to do what he can by using efficient lighting and appliances, purchasing 'green' credits, and trying to install solar panels, although zoning laws put an end to that:

I'm talking about Ideologically. I know this particular administration has been terrible, even for a Republian one. You don't need to tell me that. But when we have Dems like Hillary or Gore saying they're different, while supporting the death penalty, "free" trade and deregulation of businesses...who is being fooled now.
It was a Dem who signed over the digital airwaves to corperations to do as they will. It was a dem who championed a dracionian crime bill and increased penalties for non-violent drug offenders. and it has been Dems like Gore and (now indipendant) Lieberman who championed government censorship of rock music, and it was a Dem (or a Dem's wife and future dem) who decided cozying up to Big Pharma and insurance companies was more important than advocating universal health care. It was Dems who gave us NAFTA. And lest we forget it was a Dem who unconstitutionally fabricated the Gulf of Tonkin incident to get us into Vietnam full-bore.

I think that same political poll also showed that the Dems are more progressive than the GOP. IMHO, any step forward is better than supporting the status quo.
I personally would love it if mainstream America was honestly willing to accept a candidate like Obama, Nader, or Kucinich. However, I don't think you're going to see that kind of paradigm shift happen overnight; I think it'll take a bunch of smaller steps, building momentum over the span of a decade or so (if not longer). Let's not forget - it took almost 150 years to recognize that women were smart enough to vote, and almost 200 years to realize skin color was irrelevant...

I agree it will take baby steps. I also remember that Obama ranked smack in the middle of Authoritarian right w/ Hillary and McCain. Over all, point by point a Democrat is more likely to be progressive on a few things. The problem is that for every baby step we take toward a populist government, special interests and party politics ensure we take two more back towards authoritarian rule. 1 candidate cannot change the system. A lot of angry Americans, however, can.
