It's quite disappointing to do the math about what the take-home of a given percentage raise is. We get a 3% raise every July, after taxes and my 403b, this past 3% raise worked out to be about 20 bucks a week. Yippee?
Welcome back Bonz, but I do not find it strange that your presence being requested in the Orgy thread and then you showing up, like it was the quacking Bonzai Bat Signal.
I had no idea it was legal to give a promotion based on personal changes such as marriage and children. I'm disgusted by all this. Ugh.
It depends on the state. I know Tennessee has some jacked up labor laws, so it would probably be fine to do this here. Realistically, they don't promote the new parent/newlywed because of that. The person who "is most qualified/deserving" for the promotion just happens to fit in one of those categories.

I don't even see marriage/kids as a plus in the work place. It's that many more distractions/ sick days/ vacations that you have to worry about.
Many view it as a indication of your maturity for some reason. You're seen more as someone who has a good head on your shoulders and will act more adult versus someone who is single that doesn't really have anything holding them to a place or job.

Yeah, I think I've read in a book or seen a movie where the lawyer is trying desperately to find a wife to make partner.

I say we give it a try. Let's have an inforoo get me promoted thread. It'll bring together inforoosters that want babies/spouses to further their career.

I've noticed co-workers who are single parents have the exact opposite employer reaction, as well.

You are correct.
Distraction - check Sick Days - check Vacation days - check
I'd write more but I have to leave early to go take all three donkeys to the dentist and then stay up late to make up the time I'm missing this afternoon...

BTW Mayo, what tends to happen in my office is that there is an occasional cost of living raise but it winds up being added to the base salary so new employees can make more than vets without much effort. Does sound like you are in patriarchy hell.

I feel like that is just POOR math Katbur! Guess I shouldn't be surprised, HR folks aren't necessarily math whizes. Or else they'd be in accounting. Oh wells. We shall see what the EAP has to say.

Calculus II is more difficult than it should be. A co-worker and I have that presentation next week where we're supposed to highlight a difficult case that generates discussion over the problems that made the case difficult without talking about the problems that made the case more difficult because it might make someone look bad.
Edit: And I just realized that I left my parking pass at home. Let's hope UT's parking people are lazy in the afternoon.

1. Dude! The mere mention of Calculus makes me break out in hives. Good luck w/that!
2. UT's parking people are PURE EVIL, esp. @ my campus. Good luck w/that, too!
Also... Benadryl is amazing stuff. I didn't plan to sleep until 2pm today, but damn if I don't feel (somewhat) better. GRRR! Ragweed in autumn sucks; having a metric quackton of sick leave? Not so much.
